It's an issue for me in the sense that this gap pushes me toward for contempt for religion, which I don't see as desirable.

In my view, there is no gap.

How not? There is always a gap between what we believe (our justifies feelings) and what we know. The further back in time we go, the more the gap. Religion, history, and even our genealogy have gaps in facts vs what we believe or interpreted by records etc.

Our feelings can't confirm facts. Facts have nothing to do with feelings in regards to what is real and what isn't.

So it's a natural gap.

How can there not be unless you know the workings of the universe we have yet to find out in the years we've been on here?

In a sense of a fallen heart but bringing what you think in line with what you feel seems good to me.
Jeremiah also speak of a new heart in the new covenant and in Jer 31:31-34, Jer 32:40

“Bringing what you think in line with what you feel” sounds to me like the opposite of what a person should do if they care about believing what is true.

First, let's start with this statement: "Facts about God". Pray tell me, whose "facts"? Moreover, how can anyone speak of God in terms of "facts", like God is some Yeti, or a car, or daffodile or some object of creation? God is subjectively realized, not "objectively" where terms like "facts" etc have any meaning.

Secondly, what is meant by affections? Does this imagine that faith is about warm emotions? Together, this question doesn't quite make sense when talking about someone's faith in God.

Are you meaning to ask, how is someone's faith affected when ideas they had about God are brought into question in their lives for whatever reason? Is there a gap between what they profess to others they believe, yet secretly doubt creating a "gap" where they don't actually know what they believe?

I'll assume you don't mind a slightly different perspective about God Merc? Since you placed this in Comparative Religions.

In my understanding of what the Dharma is- there is a cut off point for needing evidence of God.

That is simply to understand that your self comes from God. With this insight is coming to understand that temporary material phenomena is no refuge for self. It is dissatisfactory and even painful to identify self with the world.

That will lead to seeing that your self has it's origin in the Lord. By extension, God or Brahman is what endures.
