Why Does God Hate Sex?

"Sex is funny in that you can live without it, but not without paying a mental/physical price. It’s a simple pleasure that grows all out of proportion when it’s denied. If Mother Nature were allowed to have her way, this would be a far better place. And who’s behind all the brouhaha? God? Actually, it’s religion.

In order to run a successful religion, you need to follow just one rule: Have more members coming in than going out. One way to achieve this is by gaining control of their sex lives. Try to think of a religion that doesn’t have anything to say about sex. Get a grip on that one single, chemically driven aspect of life and you will have a stranglehold on your flock. The more they try to avoid it, the more they’re going to be drawn to it, and the more they’re going to feel like sinners, and the more they’re going to need you to save them. Tell people sucking lemons is evil and they won’t suck lemons and they won’t need you. Tell people sex is evil and you’ll have them stuck in a revolving door.

Now here’s the rub and the real reason I get so provoked by people who have been bamboozled into believing that copulation without at least 50 strings attached is anything but normal human behavior. The truth is that violence seems to be inversely proportional to the availability of sex. Remember generations of coaches who told the team to avoid love so they’d be full of hate for the big game? Look at riots in the street and what do you see? Mostly young, testosterone-filled males throwing bricks. Look at guys flying planes into buildings. Would they do it if it weren’t for the 79 virgins? And why do you suppose there’s such a premium on virgins? The male’s lack of experience leads to a lack of confidence, and that, in turn, leads to a raging fury against experience and confidence — so let’s find someone with neither. The weird part is that so many terrorists truly believe America is swimming in sex. If they only knew that it gets so much attention only because there’s so little action.

British comedian Eddie Izzard does a very funny and very insightful routine that involves God laying down the laws of mating. The dogs are told to do it doggie-style. The dogs go away happy. The cats are also told to do it doggie-style. The cats aren’t really happy about that, but when are cats really happy about anything? The salmon are told about swimming upstream, struggling over dams and crashing into rocks only to die at the end. Bummer. And finally, the humans are told they can do it pretty much anyway they like — as long as they feel guilty. So I get comments from obviously guilty readers telling me how scary sex really is and providing laundry lists of things that can go wrong while rolling in the hay. That God ever invented sex in the first place was clearly a mistake, so they create caveats that will at least make it as unpleasant as possible.

However, if anything, it’s a lack of sex that can be deadly. The British Medical Journal reported on a long-term study of nearly 1,000 men between the ages of 45 and 59. In our culture of scary sex, it’s perhaps not too surprising that the findings have not received the attention they deserve. You see, the data showed that the amount of sexual activity enjoyed by a man is directly proportional to both his health and longevity. Men who reported twice as much sex were half as likely to die prematurely.

Thoughts?

Mine is a question. If god's attitude toward sex is truly not a concoction of religious leaders, but his very own, then what is his problem with it? According to the Bible god doesn't like prostitutes, homosexuality, bestiality, consensual adultery (all adultery is bad), marrying a divorced woman, premarital sex, lust, sensuality, semen, etc. etc..

Your last paragraph hits the nail on the head; it is a concoction of the religious leaders.

Who says God hates sex? He created it and everything He creates is perfect. He just wants it used prperly. There are many problems caused by people using sex for the wrong reason. God wants people to be happy and avoid the problems sex can cause.

I'd answer, except that God has forbidden me to speak for Him.

Sex cannot be "used" improperly. Sex does not cause problems, people's daft notions of sex, along with their avid (though guilt-ridden) participation in it are what cause problems.

And his "properly" entails hatred of those sexual practices outside of it. Read some your Bible.

God finds homosexual sex to be an abomination,
No adulterer will inherit the kingdom of God.
Lusting after a woman is committing adultery.
Those who indulge in bestiality "shall be put to death."
He even condemns sensuality
Sound like non-hatred to you?

There are many problems caused by people using sex for the wrong reason. God wants people to be happy and avoid the problems sex can cause.
Probably, but as I've pointed out above he also hates a lot of sexual activities. Hating some of them enough to condemn people to death for it.

Because, back in the day, any kind of sex beyond a couple could end up in the whole 'people' being reduced, weakened, decimated or worse by sickness.ll the OT laws were about strengthening, securing, protecting, increasing and 'cohesing' the people together into a very successful nation.

God does not hate sex. Ancient cultures and world views hate sex to justify the Fall of humanity and Original Sin.

You raise an excellent point OB. Something you do often :)

God designed sex to be the manner by which all creatures would reproduce copies of their own species. In the animal kingdom there are no moral laws but the one fathering the offspring are usually the strongest. Nature has a way of sorting that out and keeping the genes free of inbreeding defects. Even today these animals are still beautiful specimens of what God originally made.

When God introduced his laws on marriage, the Israelites were very numerous, as they had been contained in Egypt for a long period of time, so upon their release, God designated them into tribes.

"Under the Law a careful record of genealogies was kept. Family integrity was even more greatly emphasized by the matter of ancestral land inheritance. Genealogies were especially important in the family line of Judah and, later on, in the lineage of Judah’s descendant David. Because of the promise that the Messiah the King would come through these families, the record of family relationship was zealously guarded. And even though polygamy was not abolished by the Law, the family integrity was protected and its genealogy was kept intact by strict laws governing polygamy. In no way was looseness or promiscuity legally tolerated. Sons born of polygamy or concubinage were legitimate, full-fledged sons of the father.

The Law specifically prohibited marriage alliances with the seven Canaanite nations that were to be ousted from the land. (De 7:1-4) Because of failing to observe this command, the nation of Israel was ensnared in the worship of false gods and finally brought into captivity by their enemies. Solomon is an outstanding example of one who sinned in this respect. (Ne 13:26) Ezra and Nehemiah undertook energetic reforms among those of the repatriated Israelites who were contaminating their families and Israel itself by marriage to foreign wives.—Ezr 9:1, 2; 10:11; Ne 13:23-27."

So, far from hating sex....God wanted and needed to regulate it.
In the animal kingdom it is self-regulating, but in humans, moral issues come into the equation. Ignoring God's sexual laws also leads to sexually transmitted diseases. We are not physically designed to have more than one sexual partner, so the more partners we have, the more prone we are to contracting them.

We can see that the issue of obeying God's moral laws kept his people genetically separated from the nations around them. His other laws (on hygiene e.g) kept them free from food and water born diseases that plagued other nations. They practiced quarantining, but did not know why. God always has reasons for what he does. Humans are not always aware of them, which is why obedience is a good idea.

And isn't that nice of him to insure that disease was lurking just around the corner for those who didn't do as he said. Give fallible folk free will and then punish them for misusing it.

 Really? You think humans cannot control their impulses? How pathetic! People are looking for excuses to feed their own weaknesses. Weak people should not breed more weak people.
Look around you......who are the ones with all the damaged kids? o_O

Following God's laws is never a bad idea.....giving in to human fallibility is never a good idea.

Except that, in my view, God never wrote any "laws," and therefore the laws to which you refer were written by those very weak and fallible humans you deride. And why on earth would I follow them?

And I find you comment about "weak people" not breeding more "weak people" to be quite incredibly akin to notions expressed by several unsavoury leaders in in the second quarter of the twentieth century, which most thoughtful people now reject. Are you trying, once again, to build a master race?

God doesn't hate sex and neither do most religions. What SOME religionists do hate is the idea of people having sex without their approval/permission. And that's not really because they hate sex, it's because they are obsessed with the delusional idea of their own self-righteous (divine) authority. It's not about sex, really, at all. It's about control. They want to be in control of everything and everyone around them, and sexuality is a very potent force that persistently ignores their (and often our) will to control it.

I'm not saying that sexuality doesn't need to be controlled. It clearly does. But only within the boundaries of protecting us from each other. And these religious authoritarians want to go way beyond that. Which they should not be allowed to do.

You believe god has truly said something about sex?
No. It's what many, many Christians believe.

And if one disregards the non-Christians, then 51 % of American Christians "believe the Bible is the Word of God"
