Comedians shouldn't have to apologize for jokes.

It's a joke...

The most serious and profound problems, questions, and issues can be discussed only in the form of jokes ~~ Ludwig Viggenstein.

Jokes are not representative of a comedian's political, religious or philosophical ideology. Have you read transcripts of comedians' stand up? It sounds pretty terrible and atrocious without the mood, the build up and the context. And if guy from row 8 seat F gets offended then like a stenographer writes what the comedian said, of course it's going to sound bad. And of course what the comedian said is going to be grossly misinterpreted. I think people getting offended at jokes have forgotten what the fundamental purpose of comedy is. It is to take reality and douse it with the absurd and garner a few laughs in the process. Comedy takes something serious and sends it into the extreme so you can*** laugh at it.

Do you understand that jokes aren't just used to be absurd; they can also be used to ridicule, demean or insult?

If those jokes are aimed at ideologies then all the more reason for them to be welcomed with open arms.

We need a breath of fresh air in this stifling era of Political Correctness.

Even if it's a Porta Rican and a Pollock where nothing is sacred or off limits for jokes? Yeah I knew two people like that and they were hilarious.
Well, that depends entirely on the culture, intention and form. It's why Sacha Baron Cohen can perform a song about throwing Jews down a well to a public audience in the American south, while someone like Andrew Dice Clay would probably be pilloried for performing the exact same song to the exact same audience. Jokes have an intended audience, an intended message and, often, and intended target.

I'm not normally a person to speak for the dead, but I'm pretty sure that someone like Bill Hicks would disagree that his entire stand up legacy amounted to nothing but "trying to be absurd for the sake of laughs". For many stand up comedians, the idea that they aren't actually saying or doing something substantive is quite insulting, especially considering the sheer number and influence of political comedians.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I think one of the few comedians that could take serious subjects like race and disability and such and turning on its head is Chappelle. Not only that, he also conveys a message of how absurd those things are and ridicule it for what it is.

It definitely takes a master comedian to handle subjects like that and not all comedians have that ability.

And doctors shouldn't have to apologize for their mistakes, either. But most people are willing to admit when they've screwed up, and apologize to those they have negatively impacted because of it. I see no reason why comedians should respond any differently. Not every joke 'works' every time. And sometimes when they don't work it's because they were just offensive, rather than funny. Being humble and polite when that happens is not a requirement, of anyone in any field, but it's generally appreciated by all.

I tend to agree, although it's also true that comedians need a paying audience to be able to make money in their chosen profession. They're entertainers, depending on a fickle public and the whimsy of ratings for their livelihood.

Rowan Atkinson defends Boris Johnson over burka 'joke'

Well I can understand why Atkinson might say this but Johnson is supposed to be a politician with rather more regard to sensibilities, and as such he either was just stirring the pot or pushing his advancement to power. Plenty of good reasons to decry 'the blackness' (symbolic of nihilism being one), but making fun of this is hardly the best approach to get rid of this iniquitous symbol of female oppression.

PS Johnson is a comedian (following the new Trump template).

I bet you are part of the demographic that if you happen to go to a comedy show, will take what a comedian says as fact and then blog about how you were offended by it. Stay out of comedy stores and don't watch anyone's bits or specials it might damage your fragile sensibilities. .

This confirms the muddle that British politicians have got themselves into over this issue.

Moreover, the biggest joke of all is that the Conservatives are going to carry out an investigation!

Tell me, where a comedian had someone's life in their hands. You are comparing two professions that might overlap each other about 0.0%

Let's compare a video game magazine editor to a pilot, because they are about as relevant to the two professions you are comparing. When one of them messes up people die, when the other messes up maybe someone won't buy a game that's good....

Like Tom Segura's Louisiana bit. Where as a result he has to have bodyguards with him when he is touring in Louisiana.

Are you serious?

I've literally performed stand up in the past and am close friends with several stand ups. Not a single thing you just said about me is even remotely true.

Perhaps, rather than attacking people who disagree with you, you should learn your own lesson and try discourse before reacting.

It's also very telling that you completely ignored the question.

Oh you have done comedy, and have you used comedy to personally attack people? And to spread some ideology? Probably not, maybe you have I don't know if you think comedy is used in the way you said it could be used. And ignore the base element of what comedy is? Laughter. You question said comedy is used to demean, insult, and ridicule. No problem with that. I don't know what comedy you are listening to where you see a comedian attack a person without the intention to pull laughs or draw attention to a particularly vile individual and set them up on a dais to ridicule their behavior. I have never seen a bit that does that. Ever, The only time that happens is when someone loses their **** on stage. And it's no longer a comedy show.

What the hell are you taking about?

Do you honestly believe that there are no comedians out there who believe what they do is anything more than an absurdist attempt to make people laugh? Do you not believe jokes can actually carry a message or an intent?

This is very, very basic stuff.

You question said comedy is used to demean, insult, and ridicule.
No, it asked you if you knew that they CAN be used to demean, insult and ridicule.

No problem with that. Again, are you serious? You've NEVER seen a comedian use comedy as a means to attack or belittle others, ever?
