His Eminence, The Pope.

The Pope is the successor of Saint Peter. When there is a dispute about a Dogma, the Catholic Church believes the Pope will be guided by the Holy Spirit in defining a Dogma from the chair of Saint Peter. Most Popes never define a Dogma Ex Cathedra, hence, most Popes never exercise Papal infallibility.

I have no idea what some of the words you used there mean, excuse my ignorance, however, they are words that, to me, are meaningless anyway. But thanks for the info.

The popes actually own very little personally, especially Pope Francis, plus the Catholic church spends enormous amounts of money and effort to help the poor, such as with Catholic Relief Services internationally and Catholic Charities here in the States.
Even though I'm not longer Catholic, I used to do be on the Christian Service Commission for quite a few years. I still volunteer at my wife's Catholic church, and they do a lotta good here locally, let me tall ya.

So, how much do you actually do in this vein, JT? I'm not trying to be snarky, but the minute one starts throwing stones at others, be prepared to maybe see a few coming back right at ya. It's like the saying goes, when you point your fingers at someone else, note that three of your other fingers are pointing right back at ya.

I personally know some wonderful Catholic people and I agree with you many are doing some great work. I have no issues with people who are Catholics, my issue is with the Catholic Church NOT those in it

Sir, I am but a humble man, with no right to Judge, and do my utmost not to. I'm just really sad that humans have allowed themselves to be shackled by other humans.

Maybe if you do the homework you'll be more enlightened, such as from this non-Catholic source: Apostolic succession - Wikipedia

Whether you agree with it or not, there's a point to be made that you don't seem to understand.

I understand perfectly. Being defensive of something because were emotionally impeded in it only blinds us from reality. I would encourage you to listen to SF speach

And whom do you think the Catholic Church consists of?

Just a word of caution in that RF prohibits attacks on entire religions and denominations, thus maybe attacking or challenging specific teachings and/or actions might be a safer path-- plus being far more moral.

Can anyone please let me know the job description for the role of the Pope.
Shome mishtake surely. The pope is addressed as Your Holiness.

Your Eminence is for cardinals.

Any reader of John Le Carre's spy novels knows that, cf. The Honourable Schoolboy. :D

I appreciate that, but why would you assume that a Catholic is any more "shacked" than anyone maybe walking into your church? I've been in a great many Catholic churches over my 73 years, but I haven't seen any dungeons in any of them yet, plus it seems that people pretty much come and go on their own volition.

IOW, no one is forced to go to mass, so please stop distorting reality.

There are always going to be those who are offended and try to legislate against others being offended, isn't that why we should uphold free speech

Even if all that you said is absolutely true, I guess that giving an idyllic image of the Vatican is quite exaggerated...given that the recent Vatileaks scandals revealed the money-laundering activities of the IOR, and it has become a fact that Pope Wojtila used mafia money to help Solidarnosc.

Oh! I do apologise! How stupidly ignorant of me. I should have known that vital piece of information.I beg the forgiveness of His Popeleiciouseness.

And this is supposed to impress me? I've seen it before, but it was far enough back whereas I can't remember the specifics. If you have points to be made, why not make them yourself.

I'm not being "defensive" for myself, but for the sake of trying to get some to stop putting out their own religious bigotry as if they were citing facts. Over my several years here at RF, I've seen way too many act like you're acting, stereotyping and demeaning denominations and religions, and it is just so thoroughly unethical, imo.

BTW, which denomination do you belong to?

I did not say the Catholic church shackles anyone anymore than any other religion. You have your own mind to think and do as you please, as do I. I was just wondering about the Pope while starving children are on the streets, that's all. Did you know his shoes cost £300? I cannot help but question what I see. I must. No offence meant.

One only has to take a look at how Jesus responded to the religious pharisees of the day to tell you how He would have responded to the Pope.

First - you don't know if they are teaching incorrectly, etc., - so a Pharisee label is just your opinion.

There are some great books around on the role of the Roman Church and its toxic influence since the 1st century, Id be interested to know if you've ever read such literature.

I agree with this, - however, ALL religions have black marks in their histories. For instance the Protestants also murdered people, and took control of governments. Until just recently - the British heir could not marry a Catholic. Look at all the crap in Ireland.

Someone else mentioned the pomp and wealth. Interestingly Tanakh says to give fine cloth for the Priests, and Gold and such to the Temple. The Temple had gold covered tables. The priests wore jewels and gold. This is not new.
