“God did not create man in his own image. Evidently, it was the other way about, which is the painless explanation for the profusion of gods and religions, and the fratricide both between and among faiths, that we see all about us and that has so retarded the development of civilization.“

If yes or no, please explain to me.

Both...

God created Adam in His image and after the fall, man's propensity is to create a god in what image he wants.

At least that is my personal viewpoint. :)

And you don't need a religion to mess things up.

Yes to the first part (since I'm an atheist and not convinced gods aren't an an imposition of human ego onto the world around it, though I fully accept some people believe it's the opposite.)

No to the second part. I feel like the idea that humans wouldn't undermine social progress without religion is not demonstrated by history or human nature. I don't believe religion invented nor has the monopoly on inflexible axioms that don't age well with time.

You don’t identify the source of this quote. It appears to be the baseless rankings of an anti-religious fanatic.

God did make mankind in His own image. We were supposed to be the sons and daughters of God.

Yep. I sure agree with that.

God as a concept is clearly a human creation, created with human traits and quite often with not too admirable levels of same, at that.

While there is a fair variety of such conceptions and some are far more respectable than others, as a rule those that emphasize the idea of a creator god are the most difficult to justify or to find worth in.

We are all spiritual people by nature. We all know, well most of us do that material wealth cannot satisfy the deepest longing of the inner man. Do I believe in a creator, yes, however he/she might look very different than the pictures you have, that's ok. Do I believe in a literal translation of the Bible, re. Adam & Eve, no most defiantly not.

The big problem as I see is trying to either prove of disprove. I tend to like the concept of "Is your belief working for you?" Having faith in a creator is working for me. Please dont wake me up.

Being created in God's image refers to the triune nature we share with God, having a body (Son), soul (Father) and Spirit. We are the only created beings to have all three, like God. Angels and demons have spirits and souls, but no bodies; the other animals have bodies and spirits, but no souls.

The reason there are so many religions and denominations within religions can be learned from the parable of the blind men and the elephant. Several blind men who had never encountered an elephant before one day came upon one. One blind man felt the elephant's tail, and concluded that an elephant is like a rope. Another blind man felt the elephant's leg, and concluded that an elephant is like a tree trunk. Another blind man felt the elephant's ear, and concluded that an elephant is like a fan. Yet another blind man felt the elephant's side, and concluded that an elephant is like a wall. Still another blind man felt the elephant's trunk, and concluded that an elephant is like a snake. Finally, the last blind man felt the elephant's tusk, and concluded that an elephant is like a spear.

None of us are qualified to know God completely and exhaustively, so even legitimate experiences of God are necessarily limited in scope. I believe that legitimate experiences of God are at the heart of all of the world's major religions, but as their followers have to rely on various incomplete accounts of God, the Ropers think that the Trunkers are heretics, and both agree that the Fanners are all a bunch of lunatics--when in fact all of their beliefs are based in legitimate experiences of God.

If we focused more on the deeper truths common among them rather than the superficially different details, civilization might not be so retarded.

I doubt any god exists, let alone is responsible for creating humans!

Religions say far, far more about the societies and cultures from which they originated than they do about any actual gods.

I think it a belligerent and childish question but, if you're truly interested in the biblical reference, you might wish to consider the OP of

paying particular attention to the JPS quote.

I don't believe God (the Father) created any of this mess. I believe he is trying to save us from it.

I believe humans are born with the potential to reflect God’s attributes but it depends upon our efforts to do so.

I have found that I can make the effort in the world but as a general rule I would say we need God grace.

Hi Terry,

Yes I agree. I think one way God’s grace flows to us is through the Holy Books of all Faiths and as we meditate and reflect upon the wisdom contained within we are better able to transform our lives into noble and virtuous beings.

Agreed. external transformation begins with the heart, not the head

I forget who said that, was it Stalin, Chairman Mao or Kim Il Sung? all three I think..

in any case they all tried forbidding every belief other than atheism, how did that work out?
