McAfee Internet Security

I hate paying for virus software every year. So this year asked for it for a Christmas gift. McAfee and Norton's are the most expensive so I generally don't buy them. My mom bought McAfee Internet Security and guess what I got a virus the irritating one. It pops up when I click on random internet sites. The Microsoft security error with that stupid beeping and the Google chrome fatal error.

I researched on the internet and its a complicated fix, so I figured McAfee didn't catch it so lets contact them. They downloaded a software to check my computer and determined that it was a premium problem and if I just sign up for automatic renewal's they could fix it. How is that not a scam? What a crock. They are one of the most expensive Internet security software's. I've never paid more than 15 dollars for the off brands and never had an issue. I don't recommend them.

I'll be going back to the off brands again. I don't recommend McAfee.

Good call, plenty of free alternatives available. AVG and Avast are the best.

Though, to be honest, most times when those "virus" messages pop up in your browser, that's the scam to get you to purchase the anti-virus product. Doing a virus scan usually reveals no threat.

Yeah, but they are annoying the one locks the screen and I have to use task manager to close, the other sets off a loud warning beeping. I've used AVG and Kaspersky, Phoenix and few others all without issue. Its weird that McAfee one of the oldest and most expensive can't stop them.

Every virus off every computer I've ever cleaned at work has run McAfee or Norton, end of discussion. :D

Bitdefender, Avast, and MalwareBytes are all good products. I've never seen an infection on any machine running those.

I'll add a couple of notes.

I love MalwreBytes--- which is designed to attack a slightly different thing than direct viruses, so you need it in addition.

I've run Bitdefender, Avast and lately? Panda-- all of these have completely free versions, and they each have advantages and disadvantages.

Some constantly nag you to "upgrade" to a "premium" version, and the last time I ran BitDefender, it did that weekly (hence the switch to Panda, which gracefully lets you switch the nagging off).

Final note: Kperskey? Avoid that like a cheap watch labeled "Soni".... It's Russian. The main people behind it, used to work for the KGB.

Just let the implications of that connection sink in a bit-- they may be legit.

... but why take the risk? Their "success" might well be a case of insider information...

I had McAfee back in the day-- then, I tried to switch to a cheaper program.

I could not get rid of the McAfee nagware-- it kept popping up over and over, no matter how much I uninstalled, scrubbed, ran registry cleaners-- it just kept coming back... a pop-up: "you MUST INSTALL MCAFFEE OR YOU ARE DANGER-DANGER-WILL-ROBINSON--WORRYWORRYWORRYWORRYWORRYWORRYWORRYWORRY..."

How did I finally get rid of it? I reinstalled windoze.... !

I now despise them.

I also did IT support-- and had a very similar experience with Norton, refusing to be uninstalled short of a new install of the OS.

Yeah, I have never recommended it for at least 10 years. I'm a happy BitDefender client. :) (PS: I see a few of you use free AV software and all I can say is you get what you pay for.)

... Lol.

If you're worried about corporations doing devious things with your computer, there are much better and more devious corporations to start with than just anyone based out of Russia.

Hell, Windows is just a big piece of spyware you can personalize.

Since we have Choice in our selection of anti-virus freeware? Why choose one with ties to the KGB?

I used to use Panda, or Avast or several others. I now simply go with the built in one that came with Windows 10. Whatever it's called these days. Good Enough.

My PC runs much faster, boots faster as a result. And I am excruciatingly careful where I go in the interwebs.

I've been doing PCs since 1981. I have never---EVER had a virus active on any of my main machines.

I've caught a few on floppy drives-- I used to have a small collection of those just in case. But they never infected my own machines. And no-- I destroyed those discs years ago-- don't even have any working floppy drives these days anyway.

Notebook: I did unfortunately get a kind of benign "root kit" when I installed a legitimate purchased game-- it messed things up-- so game was un-installed, and the root kit "rooted out" immediately. The game maker was blasted for doing that, and walked it back within a short period. I should note, that apart from the root software that only seemed to enable the game? I was not actually harmed.

If I have McAfee on a computer I would delete it ASAP. That ****** software is essentially a virus itself more then the viruses that it's supposedly to get rid of.

I've been forced shut down by the program so many times by that god-forsaken company for the stupidest of reasons that I would seriously buy a virus protection software that would keep McAfee out of my computer permanently. Deleting McAfee is a considerable chore in itself.

I've enjoyed Advast with no forced shutdowns and collateral intrusions. It works well and is extremely consumer-friendly. The only time pop-ups occur for reminders Etc. is when I'm on my desktop which is fine. Not when you're playing games, or running another program where work is being done.

McAfee virus "protection" should be classified as a bonafide malicious virus worse than any malware out there.
