Why Black Panther is a litmus test for society.

After posting 1 billion dollars at the box office and the reactions I see that black panther the movie has a lot of personal opinions of an all black cast. It is interesting yet sad.
Can you be clearer. It was a great hit, which should not be sad, right?

WWMRD?
Tolkien white guys......

And all this time I thought the Black Panther movie was just another overhyped dopey superhero movie full of CGI and poor dialogue that I won't pay to see but may watch parts of for free at some point in the future if someone has it on in the break room at work -weird!

Why is it a litmus test for society?

It's a story based on a comic book. Admittedly I haven't watched but I heard it is doing well in the box office. So does that say something good or bad about society?

don't you see that it is not just a movie about a comic book creation but an epic document about the struggle of black people against the white Devil slave masters? you must be a racist

It also included the chap who played Bilbo Baggins and the one who played Gollum, so there were a couple of Tolkien white guys in it.

(admittedly stolen joke, but I thought it was quite funny)
Aye, Morgan Freeman......er....Martin Freeman was entirely superfluous.
Imagine this conversation....
Management: "We need a good white guy. Write one in there...any white guy."
Writers: "What's his role in the plot?"
Management: "Just give him some big random good thing to do several times in the movie."

Totally missing the point of the OP.

There was a time, not long ago, when a movie focusing on blacks was for "those people" and not for "us" - in the minds of whites. And not too long before that we had white actors in blackface singing and dancing about how "dey likes serving massah best".

The litmus test in the OP is how far we've come and sadness about how far we still have yet to go before skin color is only relevant when it comes to choose flattering clothing and makeup for women.

If you say so. I assume there is some sarcasm included.

So a mostly Black cast does well in America. We have had a Black President elected. Seems to me a majority of folks are moving past racial prejudice.

I remember Blade, Shaft, Lilies of the Field, To Sir With Love. These were all shows I enjoyed.

Fitting that the movie was made by Marvel which has always written comics that opposed prejudices of many kinds. Its actually a monotonous theme when you read them, kind of like, "Ok I get that prejudice is not good can we get on with the story, please?" When you pick up any Marvel comic it will be about 2 things: Prejudice + some other topic.

What's a black cast have to do with anything? Skin color shouldn't make a difference unless you are trying to make it one.

Haven't seen the film, but am enjoying the series on Netflix.

Still waiting for people to stop caring about skin colors and just respect one another anyway. :D

I wouldn't see an all black movie for the same reason that I wouldn't see an intentionally made all white movie. Racist as ****. I'm against pro-racist as much as I am against anti-racist ideas, both focus on identities that have no basis in biology. Our race is human, get over it. :D

Its more of a turning point for society. A movie no matter who's in it or who directed it can make large amounts of money across the world. Previously it was thought that any movie's that where not mostly white male would only make money in certain countries. We may see more Chinese, Indian, Japanese movies released in the US wide screen plus more minority movies in the US released wide screen. I like diversity in my movies so I can't wait.
