I believe that what we think of as our "self" (that is, our mind/consciousness) is the captain of a vessel full of single-celled passengers. A CEO hired by a huge colony of individual beings to weed out the bad (detrimental) from the good (beneficial) in the world through the interpretation of stimulus. Hired to keep the colony of single-cells fed, hydrated and out of harms way.
Just about everything else we ascribe to ourselves is secondary to that purpose.
