The Midterm Elections Should Be Interesting

Martha McSally goes all-in with Trump as she launches Senate run

Here in Arizona, the Republican senatorial primary will have Representative Martha McSally, a former Air Force colonel and who declares that she's all in with Trump ("My friend Martha McSally; she's the real deal, she's tough," Trump said), along with Kelli Ward, a Tea Party favorite (nicknamed "Chemtrail Kelli" and endorsed by Steve Bannon), and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently pardoned by Trump.

On the Democratic side, Representative Kyrsten Sinema will face off against attorney and activist Deedra Abboud.

When McSally gave her announcement speech at the airport, three Democrats were kicked out:

Although the airplane hanger where she gave her speech was far from crowded, a trio of Democrats were kicked out by McSally's team.

CD 2 congressional candidate Mary Matiella, along with Marion Chubon, head of a group opposing McSally known as Represent Me AZ, and Indivisible Southern Arizona's Kristyn Randel, were told to leave by Tucson airport police at the request of McSally's staff.

Chubon said they were told they would be arrested if they did not leave, "even though we have tickets" to the event.

The Democrats had not planned on disrupting the speech, Randel said.

"I just wanted to hear what she had to say, in person," she said.

McSally may have flown A-10s in the Air Force, but the rollout of her Senate campaign has been more like the slow, methodical preparations for a battle on the ground.

She is joining the race to succeed U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake with a trio of "special announcement" events across the state on Friday. She and her staff have for months refused to comment on her political plans, but it's been long apparent that she planned a run.

Already in the Republican primary race are former state legislator Kelli Ward and ex-Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who announced his run Tuesday. On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema is facing off with activist Deedra Abboud in the Senate primary.

This could be beneficial to the Democrats, who see the Republican primary as a "brutal civil war" within the party.

On Friday, David Bergstein, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said the contest will be "nasty, expensive and very long. It will drain the GOP's resources, demoralize their voters, and expose the flaws in each of their candidates."

"Whoever survives this expensive civil war in August will be held accountable for their willingness to take stances on issues that are simply out of touch with Arizona voters," said Drew Anderson of the Arizona Democratic Party.

McSally was a co-sponsor of a bill that would have exempted Customs and Border Protection from having to comply with the Freedom of Information Act and various environmental regulations which might have hindered construction of the border wall that Trump wants along the border:

McSally pulled a provision that would have allowed Customs and Border Protection to evade FOIA laws from a border bill moving through Congress in October, after TucsonSentinel.com broke the news about the measurethe previous day in an exclusive story.

McSally was a co-sponsor of the measure — H.R. 3548 — which would have in part granted broad leeway to CBP — including the Border Patrol — to avoid complying with numerous laws when operating on "covered federal land," defined as areas within 100 miles of our southern or northern border. The agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security, has nearly 50,000 sworn officers and agents and is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the world.

In addition to exempting the sprawling agency from a host of environmental laws in order to ease construction of President Donald Trump's border wall, the bill would have allowed CBP to refuse to disclose information on most of its border enforcement activities.

Congressional sources said providing path for CBP to dodge FOIA disclosures was not the intent of the provision, but wouldn't detail any reasons for it being included in the bill. McSally's staff said that they didn't know why the FOIA loophole had been included in the draft of the bill.

So, fellow RFers, how are the Midterm elections going in your state? Any news or excitement brewing?

It does seem like Arizona has three candidates vying to be the biggest raving loony.

As far as literal fruits and nuts go, we're happy to be the land of fruit and nuts (and high tech):
California accounts for over half of the harvested fruit acreage in the country. The value of U.S. tree nut production in 2012 was over $7 billion in value, with almonds, walnuts, pistachios and pecans accounting for most of the sales. California is the nation's number one producer of tree nuts.

Beyond interesting it will be down and dirty now that the Republican congress has passed the income tax reform and made its donors happy.
Sadly for the USA, this sort of backroom skullduggery is a big deal in US politics. Now that the GOPe have the tax bill that they wanted, they can quietly go back to hating Trump and obstructing him as effectively as they did Obama. It should be an interesting midterm.

Can't be helped. The people too crazy for California and those too crazy for Texas end up coming here. Makes life more interesting for the snowbirds from Michigan. ;)

The Midterm Elections Should Be Interesting

Given "The Donald's" public approval ratings in the 30's, despite the DOW soaring record highs, I doubt the Republicans have anything in their "bag of tricks" to save them from the 2018 Midterms!

Although Trump name won't be on the ballot until 2020, there is no question that the 2018 Midterms will be a referendum on this President!

If the Democrats can win a Senate seat in the "reddest" of red states, no Republican seat will be a sure bet!

That would all depend if the Dems actually talk about pertinent issues like grown adults and not always acting like immature little spoiled, whiny kindergarteners screaming, "He said that, he said this, he's bad an' I don't like him because he says mean things! Waaa.... Wwaaaaaa!!!!!!!.....WAaAAAAAHHHHHhhh!!!!!!!!!!

"The Donald" is the gift that keeps on giving - he's working overtime to provide the Democrats with enough political "ammunition" to last a lifetime!`

Given that the majority of American voters have already decided that he is unfit to be President, the real "fireworks" will come if the Democrats were to regain control of the House and the Senate as a result of the 2018 Midterms!

The Democrats will want Trump impeached, and the Republicans will just want to get rid of him and give themselves a chance to rebound in 2020!

The Republican trick bag is far from empty. Underestimating them— and the people who vote for them— is how Democrats got to this point.

Not to mention Democrats tend not to vote in Midterms, and they don’t vote unless they are inspired. We should all be very, very aware that Democrat voters are not inspired by voting against people. If we don’t have someone or something to vote for, we just don’t vote. That’s what 2016 should have taught us.

That's all that's being talked about isn't it?

There used to be a day a long time ago or "Once Upon a Time" where pertinent and practical issues were brought to the forefront and plans and how to address them. That's how people voted. With their heads, and not with snowflake personalities overwrought with emotional bullet points spewing out like grease guns in Vietnam.

I swear to God there are people out there with the immaturity and mental level of tiny little kindergarteners that somehow think that tabloid afternoon soap antics in the theme of, "As the World Turns" are instrumental as to what structures and moves forward government, putting out the impression that it's all just a rich man's game of who can win at Ring Around the Rosie regardless of any policies that the country desperately needs and depends upon for its prosperity and stability.

I on the other hand remain optimistic about the midterms. Republicans are actually accomplishing things while the Democrats continue whining and moaning with no real and practical plans put forward for the betterment of our nation.

I think the majority of people, albiet slowly, are waking up to it all and will progressively vote for whomever has the best policy that benefits the country and the domestic welfare of its citizens.

Be a Democrat or Republican I really don't care. I just want to see the prosperity of nation start to chug again and full steam ahead.

For midterms, I plan on voting with my head not my emotions. Republicans are ahead on the practical end of things in terms of accomplishments and the benefits that those accomplishments bring. I don't care what their personal lives are or what there personality is like.

I just care about who's going to get the job done when they say they're going to do something when they promise things.

That is a terrible unfortunate thing about Dems. They aren't the "civic duty" voters Republicans are, and it loses them elections.
But, hopefully this time around the Reps will continue to overestimate Trump's poor "victory" performance, and go into the elections being over confident themselves.

The Republicans literally spent 8 years whining and moaning, and it worked out pretty well for them.

That's changing now, thanks to Trump. People that don't normally vote are voting. Youth, minorities, etc. Trump is waking the sleeping giant. Just look at Alabama.
Yeah. Look at Alabama. Not all elections are going to be a Democrat going up against someone who dated an underaged girl and saying it was ok because he got the parent's permission.

Here in Indiana, Joe Donnelly probably won't get his "mana from Heaven" this time around and have his Republican sink his own ship saying getting pregnant from rape is god's will and a good thing.

Good, people shouldn't be electing candidates that put the bible above America's secular constitution.

The point being he probably won't get lucky like that again. Richard Mourdock was expected to waltz to Washington, but what sunk his own party wasn't that he wanted to put the Bible above the Constitution, it was a cold, uncaring, and unsympathetic comment against rape victims who become pregnant. He said that just before the election, and overnight he went from an assured win to abandoning all hope, and his words basically passed his silver trey win to Donnelly.
This time around Donnelly will probably face very fierce opposition from the Republicans, and they probably aren't going to run a candidate against him who has porked some teenagers. His changes look even more bleak when you consider Indiana, along with West Virginia, were the first states called for Trump. Democrats and their fan-brigade keep saying they only need to win a few seats, but in races like Indiana they need to worry about retaining seats that are going to be hard for them to keep.
