Inspired by the evolution of tendons and bones thread, and how some have trouble wrapping their heads around the evolution of these, I wish to learn from the aforementioned about something that I've had trouble wrapping my head around since I was a small child. The creation of woman in Genesis 2.

I can accept via some loose interpretation the Biblical explanation for the creation of man:

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

The dust of the ground is the dust of the stars, and we are composed of stardust. I can interpret this as this dust evolving over time into man and accept that we came about (not instantaneously, of course) from this substance over millions of years.

What I have trouble wrapping my head around is the creation of woman. Now if a similar notion to the creation of man was offered, I could give it a nod an move on. But...

"And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man."

I would appreciate if someone who has read and accepted this as truth would explain the process of removing a rib from a man and growing a woman from it here from a scientific or even rationalist perspective. Did Adam, thereafter, have only 11 pairs of ribs? Or 23 in total, one being unpaired? Did Eve have 13 pairs, or 25 ribs? How does a rib become a woman?

God can do anything. The only thing there is to figure out is what is the symbolic meaning of using a rib to make a woman. Perhaps it meant she would be a pain in Adams side.

While I'm not buying into or accepting "God can do anything" responses ITT, I did give you a funny rating because the last sentence made me chuckle.

A bit of category confusion here between a miraculous act and a normal providence through laws decreed
Miracles God set aside the normative

But you give a good argument against theistic evolution... can't have it both ways... dust is dust and Adam's side is Adam's side... man coming first then woman just doesn't fit with theistic evolution

As far as arguments against creation.... if the glove don't fit you must acquit... it doesn't fly

Some of it is two tightly coupled vs loosely coupled halves of brains

Male brains are more like two loosely coupled half of brains easier to set aside emotions more naturally analytic
Female brain more tightly coupled two halves taking in information holistically comes to deacons faster taking all information in but not necessarily knowing why they come to quick decisions and harder to set aside feelings

"(22) Jesus saw some infants who were being suckled. He said to his disciples: These infants being suckled are like those who enter the kingdom. They said to him: If we then become children, shall we enter the kingdom? Jesus said to them: When you make the two one, and when you make the inside as the outside, and the outside as the inside, and the upper as the lower, and when you make the male and the female into a single one, so that the male is not male and the female not female, and when you make eyes in place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then shall you enter [the kingdom]." Actually, it's been noted that boys are more emotional than girls are. And when you have Asperger's--because our brains are wired for logical thinking--it's very easy to see that both men and women are approximately equal in how emotional they can be, the only difference being how they express them (or lack of). Social programing does some sick and twisted things to people based on nothing more than sex.

What I'm curious about, is there are many Conservative churches that teach women have an extra set of ribs. Clearly they obviously don't, but it's what they teach as fact.

Just to clarify. G-d causes a man to fall asleep out of nowhere. His body miraculously splits open on it's own. His muscles move to the side with no hand to push them and a rib cracks off to float in the air.

...and that part your ok with, but you can't fathom how the rib could turn into a woman?

Actually, in the OP I asked for an explanation of the whole process, but I'll give you props on your take here. It made me laugh.

First I will ignore the fact text is not remotely science or explanitory That's delusuonal and even to attempt allude to or remotely on any way believe it is, is nuts.

So on that not so I may join in on the fantasy, it's obvious Woman was grown from a boner. It's a magical boner bone rib bone. I mean it's metaphorical because kids will read it I am giving you the adult grown up version.. I mean after all kids wouldn't get it andthey are too you young so we say rib bone, or metaphor actually alagorical. So it's actually alagorical. I'd ya had a degree like me it would be all clear easily. In fact really it's impossible to really understand it unless you have a degree such as theology. Since you don't have a degree it's like Einstein trying to explain relativistic theory to a child. Trust me I have a degree!!!!

That was fun and back to the forest I go to lose my mind (just on display) and find my soul.... John Muir quote btw.

Perhaps we are trying to read into it more than what it says (if we take the assumption that it was an actual physical rib).

Think of it this way or let's make it a more simpistic example that has an obvious answer. If a man looses a leg and then procreates multiple times... is there a chance that he will have children with one leg? Obviously not.

Likewise... just because God used a rib doesn't translate into Eve having 13 pairs or 25 ribs.

Was it an actual rib? If it was, certainly God can do anything as He formed man and breathed Life into him.

But I found another interpretation which is quite fascinating:

I may guess it refers to the chromosome, men have X and Y, whereas females have the X chromosome.

I already mentioned in post 3 that we're not doing the "god can don anything" argument ITT.

While the link proposes an interesting take on what was used, it does not explain the process. I would like to have a better understanding of this so we can repeat the process to determine if the hypothesis presented in Genesis 2 is falsifiable.

So you're proposing the author of Genesis was a biologist and familiar with chromosomes? Or that it was God that was familiar with this biological knowledge and felt it necessary to "dumb it down" a bit for those reading Genesis?
