Is the World out of Control or Not?

THE year 2017 began with a dismal proclamation by the scientific community. In January a group of scientists declared that the world just got closer to the worst catastrophe ever. Using the symbolic Doomsday Clock to illustrate mankind’s proximity to a global disaster, scientists moved the clock’s minute hand forward by 30 seconds. The Doomsday Clock is now set at merely two and a half minutes to midnight—nearer to a global catastrophe than at any time in over 60 years!

In 2018, scientists plan to evaluate again how close we are to the end of the world as we know it. Will the Doomsday Clock still signal an impending and unprecedented catastrophe? What do you think? Is the world out of control? You might find the question somewhat difficult to answer. After all, even experts are divided on this subject. Not everyone believes in an inevitable doomsday.

Exactly how bad are world conditions? Are we really at the brink of a great global disaster? Although some scientists and politicians preach a hopeful message, many people still feel uncertain about the future. Why?

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. Despite their best efforts, the United Nations and other organizations have failed to bring about nuclear disarmament. Instead, defiant leaders scoff at arms-control laws. Countries with a history of nuclear weaponry are frantically upgrading their old bombs and creating new deadlier ones. Countries that once had no mass-destruction capabilities are now able to destroy huge swaths of humanity.

This unprecedented nuclear preparedness makes the world a very dangerous place, even in times of “peace.” “Lethal autonomous weapons systems that make ‘kill’ decisions without human input or supervision, for example, would be particularly worrisome,” warns the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

OUR HEALTH UNDER SIEGE. Science can take us only so far when it comes to good health. High blood pressure, obesity, air pollution, and drug abuse—all risk factors for disease—are increasing. More people are dying from an array of noncommunicable diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and diabetes. Growing numbers are disabled by other diseases, including mental illness. And recent years have witnessed the unpredictable outbreaks of such dangerous epidemics as the Ebola virus and the Zika virus. The bottom line: Sickness is out of the control of humans, and the end of it seems to be nowhere in sight!

HUMAN ATTACKS ON NATURE. Factories continue to pollute earth’s atmosphere. Millions of people die every year from breathing contaminated air.

Individuals, communities, and government agencies continue to dump sewage, medical and agricultural waste, plastics, and other pollutants into the oceans. “These toxic pollutants poison marine animals and plants, as well as humans who eat contaminated sea life,” explains the Encyclopedia of Marine Science.

And we are running out of fresh water. British science author Robin McKie aptly warns: “The world faces a water crisis that will touch every part of the globe.” Politicians admit that water scarcity is largely a man-made problem and that it poses a grave danger.

NATURE’S ATTACKS ON HUMANS. Storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, and earthquakes bring about devastating floods, crushing landslides, and other types of destruction. More people than ever are killed or are otherwise adversely affected by these forces of nature. A study published by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration points to a greater potential for “more intense storms, deadly heat waves, and more extreme flood-drought cycles.” Will nature deal humankind a deathblow?

Surely you can think of other grave threats to our survival. Yet, you will not find satisfying answers about the future by analyzing all the bad things happening today. Some may say the same about listening to politicians and scientists.

Each of us on this RF even can put our thoughts and actions towards a better world by starting with Our home, Our community, Our society, and so forth. If we dont see ourselves separate from the world and know this world isnt dependent on us to survive (as if it wants to live forever), yes we can do something but where do each of us start?

I mean eating organics and recycling and prayers are cool, can we go deeper?

How do we respond to a world that seems out of control? The world seems that way because it is out of control — the sun rises whether we want it to or not, the toaster breaks, someone cuts you off on your way to work. We’ve never had control. We have the illusion of control when things go the way we think they should. And when they don’t, we say we’ve lost control, and we long for some sort of enlightened state beyond all this, where we imagine we’ll have control again. But what we really want is peace. We think that by having control or becoming “enlightened” (and no one knows what that means) we’ll find peace.

A World Out of Control | HuffPost

Kind of how I see it, we were never in control. We just have to make the best out of whatever situation we happen to find ourselves in at this moment.

Humans, IMO have a bad record of predicting the future. Often predicting doom and gloom. Well catastrophes do happen. We do our best to survive whatever the world throws at us.

I never really felt much in control, what I feel most is lucky. Things usually work out for me. I don't know if that is luck or if I just kept at it until a solution presented itself.

The world maybe out of control but what seems more important is that I don't give up.

Just discovered my family motto traced back to Scotland - "While I have breath I hope"

Actually, the clock has been set to two minutes to midnight in the past. There is even an awesome Iron Maiden song about it, aptly titled "Two Minutes to Midnight."

No it is not even close to the end. We are currently surviving this planet at exponential rates compared to any time in history. Evolution shows that life is quite stubborn about going completely extinct, humans are the most stubborn in the animal kingdom, ever.

I actually had a couple of JWs at my door asking me this question a week ago. Normally I don't engage, but felt genuinely curious that day. I talked with them in the freezing cold for at least 20 minutes with nothing but a sweater in the 15 degree weather. Nice souls. I think they left feeling more optimistic than what their Awakening pamphlet (referenced above) was describing. The lead witnesser left telling me, "This really made my day," beaming from ear to ear. I'm glad I could help bring some light to such otherwise doom and gloom fear mongering marketed through the supposed Watchtower.

Love speaks much louder than fear. Fear is what you peddle when you don't have Love.

I have the opinion if there is still a need for convincing, then it's clear all the facts are not in.

Doomsday will come, just not now.

Hi Deeje,

You know my thoughts about this.

The world has made great progress in the last 150 years but of course there is much to be done.

Although there are is significant areas of conflict in the world, the scale of international conflict has diminished in no small measure due to increased international cooperation and the establishment of the United Nations and associated international agencies in the aftermath of WWII.

Democracy is well established as main model of governing human affairs.

Women's rights have improved and women in most democracies can participate in elections whereas in the nineteenth century they could not.

Increasingly we see ourselves as one people, on one common homeland, the earth.

I could go on and on. Of course there is much work to do and that depends on the contribution each of us can make to our communities.

It is a great mistake to imagine that the problems are so big and insurmountable to render ourselves powerless. If each of us plays our part, we can turn this world into paradise on earth. :)

God bless and thanks for posting.

My belief is summed up in this image:

I believe that the world is controlled by an evil unseen force that the Bible calls "demonic".

The Bible writer James, in speaking about the consequences of our use of speech said this....

"A spring does not cause the fresh water and the bitter water to bubble out of the same opening, does it? 12 My brothers, a fig tree cannot produce olives, or a grapevine figs, can it? Neither can salt water produce fresh water.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him by his fine conduct demonstrate works performed with a mildness that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and contentiousness in your hearts, do not be bragging and lying against the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above; it is earthly, animalistic, demonic. 16 For wherever there are jealousy and contentiousness, there will also be disorder and every vile thing.

17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, reasonable, ready to obey, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, not hypocritical. 18 Moreover, the fruit of righteousness is sown in peaceful conditions for those who are making peace."
(James 3:11-18)

James was addressing his admonition to fellow Christians. He was saying that we can't talk about one thing, whilst supporting the other by our actions.

A "mildness that comes from wisdom" does not self promote...it can't display envy or contentiousness...it isn't jealous of the success of others and it doesn't lie against the truth.
All that comes from this world which is "animalistic" (unreasoning, without due regard for the consequences of any action) and "demonic" (originating from the minions of satan who is at present in control of this world. 1 John 5:19)

People are recognizing, as that veil is pulled back, just what they have been putting their faith in all their lives. This is also what the Bible said would take place as this world system nears its end.

2 Peter 3:8-10 ....."However, do not let this escape your notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. 9 Jehovah is not slow concerning his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire anyone to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance. 10 But Jehovah’s day will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar, but the elements being intensely hot will be dissolved, and earth and the works in it will be exposed."

This is what I believe we are seeing now. It will be unexpected "as a thief" likes to steal when we are sleeping....but its not all gloom and doom! Its what comes after that event that is truly wonderful. The end of all wickedness caused by these demonic forces and the renewal of life as it was meant to be lived on this beautiful planet.

My expression for what you refer to as "demonic" is "Kali Yuga" which to me is ending second by second with the new world being born as warm harbingers of spring are felt while winter appears to hold sway. I see signs of spring every day.
