I thought it would be kind of nice to post what your favourite songs of praise are and any special meaning they have to you. Or even just vaguely-ish religious sounding songs or just songs one associates with religion and why we like them. How they shape one's religious experiences and the like.
Hell why not through in other forms of art as well. Paintings, pictures etc of something that to you, evokes feelings of connectivity to your religion/God whatever.

Some of my faves include All Around Me and Beautiful Bride by Flyleaf. The songs that clued me into the fact that the band was actually Christian. I don't even know why, I just really liked them both and listened to a lot of their stuff in High School. So perhaps there's a nostalgic factor.
Mercy Tree by Lacey Sturm, lead singer of Flyleaf. There's such a passion and sincerity to her performance. A little softer than she usually is, but it's nice.
Broken Pieces by Apocalyptica ft Lacey Sturm. This is what happens when you cross metal heads with classical instruments lol. Not necessarily religious I guess, but Lacey has always sung about being healed through Christ and being deliberately vague in the lyrics to have a more broad appeal.
Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai (translation, I See my God in you) A love song from a Bollywood movie, but still very nice. Expresses the idea to me that is important in my lineage. God can shine through every person and whilst it is a silly love song, the video celebrates religious diversity as the couple travel to various houses of worship. I like that. Also it keeps getting stuck in my head and I can't even pronounce the title correctly. So it's amusing to me.

Do you think it's important to connect to your religion, God or even philosophy through music? Is it important or just a nice flourish to have?

My favorites are old time gospel songs.
I don’t think it’s important to have music to connect to God.
But I really like the music.

I like several of Elvis' gospel recordings, quite the voice and good backup singers. I'm no longer Christian, but really well done.

The Meeting, by Jon Anderson (Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe, 1989)...this was our entrance song at our wedding...

The entire Tales from Topographic Oceans, Yes...in fact, pretty much anything by Yes...

Jesus Christ, Superstar (yes, the entire album)

I'm sure there's more, but that's a start

We do mostly meditation, ritual and chanting. I like old school southern baptist music. Soon that very Soon. Take me Back. Amelia Jacksonnamong others. Im not familar with "buddhist" songs. Monastics take precepts to avoid entertainment. Its not required of laity but I assume we follow their example especially at the temple.

Atma-Shatakam/Nirvana Shatakam of Adi Sankaracharya, if you consider that as a praise song.

I've recently been listening to some Breakingg Benjamin that's been pretty inspirational. This one Closer to Heaven is from the album Dark before Dawn which also has another good one called Ashes of Eden.

OMG Breaking Benjamin!! I used to listen to them all the time in High School. And I was obsessed with Ashes of Eden when it came out. Such a good band.

I'm pretty sure music lyrics is what first lead me to my religion, and some of it clearly enhances my spiritual feelings.
Some examples:

Guy Threepwood

Mighty Pirate
Alive & Kicking from 80's band Simple Minds, best known for 'don't you forget about me'
Like a lot of their stuff, the spirituality is quite apparent in the lyrics, but flew entirely under the pop-music radar in secular markets

You lift me up
To the crucial top, so I can see
Oh you lead me on, till the feelings come
And the lights that shine on
But if that don't mean nothing
Like if someday it should fall through
You'll take me home where the magic's from
And I'll be with you
What you gonna do when things go wrong?
What you gonna do when it all cracks up?
What you gonna do when the love burns down?
What you gonna do when the flames go up?
Who is gonna come and turn the tide?
What's it gonna take to make a dream survive?
Who's got the touch to calm the storm inside?
Don't say goodbye, don't say goodbye
In the final seconds who's gonna save you?

Alive and kicking
stay until your love is
Alive and kicking

A couple of my favorites, among many. :)

The lyrics for the first song:
Namaskaratha Mantra combines three Mantras : Om Namo Hiranyagarbaya Mantra, Ishaan Mantra Shiva Gayatri Mantra or Tatpurusha

Namaskaratha Mantra [Hymn To Lord Shiva]

Umapataye
Pashupataye
Namo Namah

I trust in divine essence, eternal nature,
to form immortal, eternal Lord,
Lord of Parvati and Uma,
Lord of wild animals , I submit myself to you.

Ishaan Mantra [Lord Shiva Proclaims ]:

Ishaana Sarva-vidyanam
Ishvara Sarva-bhutanam
Brahma-dhipati Brahmano-dhipati
Brahma Shivome Astu Sadashivoham

Lord of all knowledge,
Lord of all that exists,
Lord of Brahman, the Lord of supreme knowledge, the universal Spirit,
I am Shiva, I am the eternal Shiva

Shiva Gayatri Mantra or Tatpurusha:

ॐ OM Tatpurushaya Vidmahe
Vakvishuddhaya Dhimahi (the one of pure speech)
Tanno Shiva Prachodayat

I grew up listening to a lot of Christian punk, metalcore and post-hardcore. Flyleaf is a favorite, definitely.

Some other songs that stand out for me:

I tend to use my own compositions in ritual rather than other works, but this song by Wendy Rule captures some of the essence of a few of the ones I have in my tradition. The Four Elements are pretty central for me, so there are a number of chants I have to them that are kind of similar to this:

The ones I use are somewhat personal to me, so I don't like sharing them.
