"Australians decisively support same-sex marriage"

Jeremiahcp

Well-Known Jerk
The vote showed 61.6% of people favour allowing same-sex couples to wed, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said.

More than 12.7 million people - about 79.5% of eligible voters - took part in the eight-week postal survey.

PM Malcolm Turnbull said the "overwhelming" result meant his government would aim to change the law in parliament before Christmas.

"[Australians] have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality," he said after the result was announced.

"They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love. And now it is up to us here in the parliament of Australia to get on with it."

Australians decisively back gay marriage

A waste of 100 million dollars. Although if it means the yobbos in Parliament finally catch up to the 21st century before Christmas, then at least some good came of it.
Also I am happy that the no vote was under the 40% target Tony "budgie smugglers" Abbott was going to label a win, for whatever reason.

"After months of voting and discussion, the results of the same-sex marriage survey have finally landed: we said yes! Curious to see exactly how many people voted Yes and how many voted No? Below are the numbers as we heard them during the official results announcement this morning.

Response_infographic.gif

How many people voted in total?
There were 12.6 million votes counted in total — just over half the population of Australia.

How many people voted Yes?
61.6 percent of the Australian population, or 7,817,247 people voted yes.

How many people voted No?
38.4 percent of the Australian population, or 4,873,987 people voted no.

In Numbers: How Australia Voted in the Same-Sex Marriage Survey
https://www.popsugar.com.au/news/Percentage-Yes-Votes-Same-Sex-Marriage-Survey-43501470
So taking into consideration that there are 24,000,000 people in Australia and only 12,600,000 voted that means that almost half of Australia's population didn't even participate in the vote. Most of us were sick to death of hearing about it TBH.

I look at pictures like this and think.....what do they say at such weddings? "I now pronounce you husband and husband or wife and wife"?

This will never sit well with those who hold to the Bible's standards. Marriage is defined in scripture as between a man and a woman. They should call it something else instead of trying to dictate their own standards to what God has instituted. It will never have his approval despite what humans think.

Religion has no business dictating civil law. Don't like gay marriage? Don't have one. Doesn't matter what any made up deity "thinks" about it.

I got a kick out of the following in the article.

"The Yes campaign argued that it was a debate about equality. The No campaign had put the focus on the definition of family, raising concerns about how issues like gender will be taught in schools."

After all, if we can't explain it to our kids it doesn't deserve to exist. Am I right, or am I right!

Gays have no right to override God's laws and to redefine his arrangement. So this issue will never be settled because freedom of religion is a guarantee under most constitutions. I have a conscience towards God and I have no will or need to violate his standards.

I have no hatred for gays or transsexuals or anyone else who is a victim of their genetic make-up.....we are all imperfect in our own way. What rattles me most is the demand to call their union a "marriage" when it violates all the laws of God pertaining to his arrangement. He has rules for his own institution....but its almost as if this issue is designed to humiliate God and to force acceptance from people to whom it will never be acceptable. I will personally never accept a gay marriage as valid no matter what the law states. But I will not lift a finger to prevent it either. I leave the future in the hands of my Creator.

I don't care what gays do in the privacy of their own homes, just don't make a mockery of marriage by using the word to describe what gays are doing. A civil union would give them all the legal rights they want. But the ramifications have already been felt in Canada, and I am waiting for the same thing to happen here. Most people have no idea where this will lead......time will confirm all our suspicions I believe. Do you understand the concerns that many people have?

If I'm not a part of a religion, why should that religion have any effect over my life? I assume Australia is a secular nation and not a theocracy so your religion's beliefs have no bearing on the law or what gay couples choose to call their legal arrangements (you don't own marriage). You may not like it but you'll have to live with it. What concerns? Canada is doing just fine. There is nothing to be concerned about.

You should stop insisting Christians hold the exclusive rights to define a civil law ceremony and right.
Gays have no right to override God's laws and to redefine his arrangement.
Christians have no right to dictate the lives of others. "God's law" does not apply to those who don't believe, and Christians themselves can't even really agree as to what exactly "God's law" is. You have your beliefs, they have theirs. You have no right to over-ride and over-rule the beliefs of others, especially when it comes to civil matters.
A civil union would give them all the legal rights they want.
In America (I'm not sure formally of other nations but it doesn't seem to fly in most I'm aware of) it was ruled, decades ago, that "separate but equal" is unconstitutional and thus illegal and not something that can be legally practiced. This demand for "civil unions" instead of marriage is nothing less than trying to roll back on civil rights.

God didn't institute marriage. Marriage traces back to human pair bonding, which evolved in us as an instinct.

You can believe that if you like....I believe the Bible....what it actually says is that God brought the woman to the man in a marriage relationship that would involve 'filling the earth'...so he married them. Having children was the whole purpose of marriage. In Bible times, there was no marriage ceremony as such but some wealthy folk held a feast to celebrate the union. A betrothed couple stayed at their respective houses until the groom prepared a place for his wife. Once he had a marital home, he simply went to her house and escorted her to her new home. Well wishers lined the streets and gave approval to the marriage. They were the witnesses to it.

Just as I, and many others, will never accept your god's laws as valid.

There have been no "ramifications."
Most people have no idea where this will lead......time will confirm all our suspicions I believe.
What will happen is future generations will see opposing same-sex marriage just as equally pathetic as opposing racial integration.

I care about that why? I care what someone thinks about me and my private life why?

I care what someone else’s scripture says why? Your scriptures are not binding on me. I have my own, which are far more fulfilling and meaningful for me. I care about a deity who has no power over me why?

This is what really chaps my butt... trying to force your beliefs on me.

....what it actually says is...

Pretty myths aren't my area of expertise, but out of curiosity, is there any passage in your bible that explicitly states the word "marriage" must be reserved for the union of a male and female?

Where did I say it had to? Religion has nothing to do with secular law...or it shouldn't. But religion is what gives us our conscience...our natural sense of right and wrong. Even non religious people are repelled by SSM.

No one will dictate to my conscience but God. So it matters little what laws are passed. I will personally never accept it as valid. But as long as they don't cross my path, I will not cross theirs. If they don't want my opinions forced on them, they shouldn't expect to have their opinions forced on me.Happy to live and let live in that regard.

I assume Australia is a secular nation and not a theocracy so your religion's beliefs have no bearing on the law or what gay couples choose to call their legal arrangements (you don't own marriage). You may not like it but you'll have to live with it.

Australia's largest "religion" is sport. We are by nature skeptics and we have our BS meters set pretty high on average. We don't swallow what others tell us generally, and we like our own way of doing things.
We are less likely to say yes to anything unless the propaganda has been dispensed in just the right way, by the right people....e.g. celebrities and sports stars who are gay. Especially the ones who touch an emotional chord. Perception management is a science and the powers behind this movement know what they are doing. There is an agenda that most people will not be aware of.

What concerns? Canada is doing just fine. There is nothing to be concerned about.
