When one's reality doesn't align with it's belief system, does the self suffer?

I guess it depends on the reality vs the belief. If reality is harsh and one's belief is that the world is safe, then there are going to be conflicts. If reality is harsh and one's belief is that the world doesn't really care, it seems like that'd be less harmful. If the world is safe but one thinks we are in constant danger, they might hurt themself with only good intentions. So in my opinion, the question by itself bares quite some weight.

Doesn't their reality align with their belief system?

a two year old's belief system aligns with their reality, in that sense yes. unfortunately selfishness arises from attachment to impermanent things and things that aren't necessarily the believer's things. so no a personality's belief isn't going to align with reality; when they are negatively impacting someone directly by accepting negative actions towards themselves, or from another, or towards another.

What things aren't necessarily the believer's things?

Speaking for myself, I own all my beliefs.

i'm speaking of tangible things that a believer might perceives to be theirs, or should be theirs; when in reality the thing is someone else's because they worked for it, or inherited it from another because they wanted them to have it. yet someone covets something about other self.

Whose else's is it?

For we humans, "reality" is a belief system. When our experience of existence does not align with our conception of reality we experience what is called, "cognitive dissonance". And as our concept of "self" is part of our concept of reality, that dissonance will very likely effect that "self", as well.

example
a thief steals what is other self's. the thief takes without earning, or being offered a thing as a gift.

the problem arises, when the thief doesn't allow another to do likewise to self. the self differentiates between self and other as self.

boils down to hypocrisy.
