The Servants in Isaiah

gottalovemoses

Im mad as Hell!
I'm new to all this. I mean the prophecies in Isaiah. Those of you more clued up on this, how do you suggest I interpret Chapters 53 for instance? It's the coming of Jesus Christ right? All pointing to Jesus Christ? But these verses have a different meaning for Jews don't they.

I think that for many ages this was not explained to noobs. You had to prove you were a genuine person who cared for others and were dedicated. I think it became not a secret-secret but a trade-secret. Keep in mind the churches were inundated with political influences and nasty little spoiled brats kept being put into high positions of authority. For that reason I think things were not explained openly.

I tend to wonder if I'm supposed to explain things like this or not. I don't actually know why people don't know the answer so frequently. Perhaps if I explain things someone will kill a kitten or something.

My suggestion is take the Jewish reading as a standard topping (like it were a pizza topping). Then try to take the gospel reference as an extra pizza topping. Then you let the two toppings accentuate each other.

Note to self. Ignore this guy's posts from now on.

Chapter 53 of Isaiah is talking about Israel, whom G-d calls 'My Servant' frequently throughout the book.

“He was being pierced for our transgression; he was being crushed for our errors. . . . Because of his wounds there has been a healing for us.”

Perhaps no other prophecy in the Bible better depicts Christ’s sacrifice and what it has accomplished than the one recorded at Isaiah 53:3-12. Isaiah foretold the Servant’s sufferings and provided specific details about Christ’s death and about the blessings his death would result in for his followers.

It is my understanding that the Jews acknowledge that this passage was speaking prophetically about someone but they do not recognize Jesus as that someone. How could they? It would mean that they fulfilled Jesus words in Matthew 23:37-39. :(

I agree. it is really a moving chapter of the Passion of Christ.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Jews. If they post, we can see what some of them believe. You are right though that ch. 53 is about Messiah, the Redeemer of mankind's sins.

I think you will enjoy Isaiah a lot if you read it with the 'End of the World' in view.
Just to give you a short extremely important glance, I quote from chapter 24:

20 The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock;
and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day,
that Jehovah will punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison; and after many days shall they be visited.

20: speaking of what happens when the sign of Christ appears in the sky.
21 speaking about how God shall punish 'high ones on high' as opposed to our high kings. This then refers to satan and the fallen angels who rule from the heavens, above earth. The kings of the earth, its rulers, will then be done away with.
22 satan and his angels imprisonment in the abyss and his later release is mentioned.

In this short reading, it should be clear how important the book of Isaiah is regarding the end that we live in.

Its funny I spent a lot of time on a Christian forum where there was overquoting of the Bible. here I'm actually glad someone is quoting it. Thanks.

Just want to point out they are not allowed to post here, because this is the Christian Dir area. Even if you invite them its against forum rules for them to post in this Dir.

The post Resurrection community, in their quest to understand God's purpose in Jesus, look to the only Scripture they had, the OT. and interpreted it in the light of Christ. That does not mean that the author of Is had an historical person in mind. It could very well be that the 'suffering servant" of Is is not a person, but Israel itself.

Didn't know that. How then can discussions across religious borders be discussed?
Use Religious Q&A or Interfaith Discussion. If its going to be a heated conversation then use a Debate area and be specific about your position. Off the top of my head areas marked for debate are: Religious Debates, General Debates, and Scriptural Debates. There are moments where its very hard not to respond to a comment that annoys, and we try to keep those moments in debate areas. When somebody in 'Christianity Dir' asks a question the thing to do is state your opinion and not discuss which opinion is best. Also try not to talk about other Dir areas such as Buddhists, etc. They can see what we post, and it causes complaints when their religion is getting discussed but they cannot comment. There is also a private Christian-only forum that you may get access to only be requesting it from an administrator. That forum is not visible to all users.

This site is hard to learn. I only know how to answer some questions. It is also a bit hard to navigate in.

Sure seems to be an appropriate analogy.
:) It relies upon your patience. Everything is a lot simpler on boards that have one main religion, but they are kind of boring. There's no chance for cross-talk. This one is more complicated, and it does test your patience. You get the opportunity to talk to people in very far away places though. That is part of the forum mission, so I think that is why the Dir rules are a little complicated.
