Our Reason For Being Here On Earth

Skwim

In Genesis 1:26,27 it says god created us so we would "rule over all the fish in the sea and the birds in the air. . . . rule over all the large animals and all the little things that crawl on the earth.” Rule over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

To me this is extremely odd. In what way are we expected to "rule over every living thing that moves on the earth," and why?

Obviously we have little if any rule over 99% of "every living thing that moves on the earth,” nor does it look like we'll ever have any more.

Just consider:

Considering only those organisms in the Animalia Kingdom there are an estimated 7+ million animals we're supposed to be "ruling over." Sound reasonable to you? If it does then why aren't the Christians and Jewish religions doing anything about it? Why don't we hear sermons about our appointed reason for being here on earth: "Go out and rule over all the frogs and toads." "Go and see after the 5,000 grasshopper species in the world. NOW! It's your god given duty! And while you're at it don't forget about all the blood worms, ticks, and lice that need tending. AND DON'T ASK HOW!"

Sound absurd? To me it does. Yet it's god's wish and command. However, if ruling over every living thing that moves on the earth isn't our reason for being put on earth here on earth, what is?

Why else did god plunk us down on earth? And why can we so easily dismiss god's command?

What? Me worry?
One reason for our being here on Earth has been grossly overlooked, IMHO. We are actually holding the Earth down by our mere weight. If there were not so many of us on the Earth, then this poor planet would go flying out into space.

If ruling over the earth means creating another mass extinction then I think humans have god covered.

Hmmm. Isn't it always science and its impeccable logic that gets in the way of a good discussion. :p

Sigh, rule is chosen to/or not to be exercised. Only someone with a lot of birds on their antenna, or just a sarcastic mouth would post drivel like this. You actually sound absurd to me. Typical of many ego inflated, convinced they are superior atheists/abiogenesists/evolutionists. Actually, you are rather sad in that you must post crap like this to maintain your view of yourself.

I was going to keep quiet, but then you called out Judaism.

First of all, neither of the verses are a command. The first verse is not in the imperative. And the second verse is written as a blessing. It says that man was created in G-d's image or that he would be fruitful and multiply and that he would have dominion over the animal kingdom.

Secondly, it doesn't say to rule over them by collecting taxes, it means that we're meant to be on top of the food chain and can do what we want with all the other animals. See the parallel verse in 9:2.

Ruling over something doesn't mean that you have to watch it's every move and discipline it. Human beings make decisions that affect the earth more than any animal ever does.

The reason I'm on Earth is that none of the other planets are so convenient.

Can't say I'm at all surprised that once again you're forced to reach into your "Ad Hom" jar for a reply rather than actually come up with an answer.

It's kind of ironic to see those verses that contradicts passages regarding plauges of frogs or locusts causing famine and death. Amongst other, like bears and Crocs.

Everything that has always been here is still here, oh, wait a minute, all that space junk flown away from Earth apparently makes Earth lighter !!!

Genesis 1:26-28
26 Then God said, “Now let’s make humans[f] who will be like us.They will rule over all the fish in the sea and the birds in the air. They will rule over all the large animals and all the little things that crawl on the earth.”

27 So God created humans in his own image. He created them to be like himself. He created them male and female. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Have many children. Fill the earth and take control of it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the air. Rule over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Imperatives:
"They will. . . . "
"They will. . . . "
"take control of it."
"Rule over the . . . ."
"Rule over every. . . . "

Secondly, it doesn't say to rule over them by collecting taxes, it means that we're meant to be on top of the food chain and can do what we want with all the other animals.
Silly squirming.

See the parallel verse in 9:2.

Genesis 9:2
2 Every animal on earth, every bird in the air, every animal that crawls on the ground, and every fish in the sea will be afraid of you. All of them will be under your control.
So what?

The reason I'm on Earth is that none of the other planets are so convenient.

.....and as long as the ' sin issue ' started in Eden is Not yet settled before the thousand-year governmental rule by Christ Jesus comes to Earth there will be No intelligent life on other planets. However, after Jesus' millennium-long day of governing over Earth then mankind will know more about God's purpose for mankind in regard to other planets.

Thankfully, as Revelation 11:18 B says that God will bring to ruin those ruining Earth.
God will have Jesus' step in before extinction by getting rid of the wicked as Isaiah 11:3-4; Revelation 19:14-16 says.

Okay, Then what did god mean by telling us to "rule over . . . ."?

Because what you describe is burdensome. Maybe his commands aren't as much of a burden as you think they are.
Doesn't matter what I think. I've only observed that god said mankind was created to do X, and so far mankind hasn't done X and doesn't appear he intends to.

Imperatives:
"They will. . . . "
"They will. . . . "
"take control of it."
"Rule over the . . . ."
"Rule over every. . . . "
"They will" in verse 26 is not an imperative, its in the imperfect.

'When will your kids get home?'
'They will be home around six.'

Verse 28 can be read in the imperative...were it not for the first word of the verse explaining that the following is a blessing, not a command. Apparently in Biblical Hebrew, when you bless someone, you do so in the imperative. See Gen. 27:29, when Isaac is blessing Jacob he uses the imperative (be a master over your brothers) when the blessing directly relates to Jacob (as opposed to the rest of the blessings that speak about what other should do to Jacob).

Also whichever translation you're using is not that great. It seems to be introducing words into the text that aren't even there. If you need to use a Christian translation, I recommend Young's Literal as a generally more accurate translation.
Silly squirming.

Genesis 9:2
2 Every animal on earth, every bird in the air, every animal that crawls on the ground, and every fish in the sea will be afraid of you. All of them will be under your control.
So what?

Yeah...keep reading...

No real, serious discussion is warranted here so I'll just move on over to the next thread. It looks like Skwim and his ilk are once again well on their way to poke fun at God and his word.
