There's a Chance Semen Cures Depression in Women

New Breakthrough: Semen May Actually Cure Depression In Women

This is the second study I've heard of (the first was some years ago) to come to the conclusion that semen was an anti-depressive in women. One or two studies do not a fact make, however. It will be interesting to see if any more research collaborates these first two studies.

Please discuss.

Question: If it turns out that semen does act as an anti-depressive in women, what could be the evolutionary reason for that?

That would be a rather............interesting study to screen for. I wonder what the interview process was like.

I was fully expecting to see an article from the Onion. Truth is truly stranger than fiction, it seems.

Well, D'uh! The question is exactly how.
The beer in my system tells me to give a meme-y, college student-type answer. The moderator in my system tells me that that would break forum rules. So the rational person in my system will simply suggest that sexual activity promotes social cohesion, which has been proven to lead to a greater overall sense of well-being, as well as providing reassurance, companionship and emotional support to women from the group. Theoretically, one could also speculate that there are some hormones in semen which could provide a chemical stimulant in the female nervous and limbic systems.

Not everything that happens has an evolutionary reason. The simple fact that such a result wouldn't be selected against would be enough to keep it in the gene pool, if it just happened to be the case.

Male scientists hail the new discovery, female scientists remain puzzled by findings...hehe

I like the quote from the article;

"women who did not use condoms showed fewer signs of depression, leading to speculation that when semen is absorbed through the vagina, it may have an effect on women’s moods."

That's science people! A sample size of 300, I guess it is pretty conclusive. Nice to know researchers aren't wasting their time with trivial hoo ha....

okay, it's still early (for me at least)...read the article...this seems like it was a fishing expedition, with no clear idea of what they where trying to find...And it's a self-selecting, self-reporting sample (always an issue in survey design) of college (in psychology and other social science studies, college students are roughly equivalent to lab rats, and generalizing from studies of students should always be taken with a very large block of salt) females who have sex. The comparison/control group should have been college females who do not have sex. Surely there were some who responded to the survey?:confused:

Next study up: Whether semen has an effect on the depression of gay males who have sex, with or without condom use...:p
