Ram Nath Kovind is presently Governor of Bihar and the candidate for the position of the President of India for Bharatiya Janata Party-BJP, the Hindu party, and their associates. Kovind is a Dalit leader and was President of the BJP Dalit Front (1998-2002). He was elected to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh for two terms in 1994-2006. He was an advocate by profession and practiced in Delhi. He is 72 year old.

The ruling combine (National Democratic Alliance) does not have the requisite strength to elect the President on its own (short of a majority by a whisker), but opposing a dalit candidate is, sort of, considered blasphemy in India. Many opposition parties have indicated their support for Mr. Kovind and we expect him to win.

Opposition jolted as Nitish Kumar, Mayawati say ‘positive’ on Ram Nath Kovind
(Orissa ruling party BJD has supported Mr. Kovind's candidature. Maharashtra's NCP chooses to oppose).

Again a master stroke by Narendra Modi/Amit Shah (BJP President) which has virtually de-fanged the opposition.

More and more opposition parties are announcing their support for Ram Nath Kovind. That include Mulayam Singh of SP and Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar with 1.9% strength (21,000). Practically, It has become a one-sided affair. They know it is futile to fight. Will they even be able to put up a common candidate?

Opposition has chosen its candidate - Mrs. Meira Kumar, Congress party, dalit, five time parliamentarian, Minister of Social Justice in Manmohan Singh's government, former Speaker of the Indian Parliament, and daughter of Mr. Jagjivan Ram, minister in Nehru and Indira Gandhi governments for 24 years and one who forgot to pay his income-tax for ten years. It is a token candidature. They know they cannot win.

What has this thread got to do with Hinduism? It seems to be focussed on Indian politics. Of course one can say that BJP being the Hindu party is demonstrating Hinduism by its choice of candidate for President. I do not know that religion and politics can be combined.

BJP candidate for Vice-Presidentship: Venkaiah Naidu (68). A former President of BJP and presently Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information and Broadcasting in the Modi ministry. One big reason for selection of Mr. Venkaiah Naidu is that he is a four-time member of the Upper House, where BJP has limited numbers. Mr.Naidu is well-liked senior member and will be able to manage it well.

Law-makers cast their vote for Presidential election today. Results on 20th. The election is nearly a walk-over for BJP. Many of the opposition and non-aligned parties have chosen to vote for Mr. Kovind.

The opposition Vice-Presidential candidate: Gopalkrishna Gandhi (71). He is Mahatma Gandhi's grandson. A strong candidate because of the Mahatma connection, a person born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Mr. Gandhi was an Indian Administrative Services person. He was Minister (Culture) in High Commission of India, UK and Director, The Nehru Center, London, UK.

This was followed by various diplomatic and administrative positions including High Commissioner of India to South Africa and Lesotho, Secretary to President of India, High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka, and Ambassador of India to Norway, and Iceland, before his retirement from IAS. In 2004, he was appointed Governor of West Bengal.

At the end of counting today, Ramnath Kovind got 2930 votes valued 7,02,044 and the Combined Opposition candidate Meira Kumar got 1844 votes valued 3,67,314. Mr. Kovind will be the second Dalit President of India and BJP's first.

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, one of the larger states of India, has resigned because of corruption of the major coalition partner, Laloo Yadav and his Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). One son of Laloo Prasad was the Deputy Chief Minister and the other too was a minister. Laloo Yadav has been convicted in one scandal and his sons/daughters are involved in dubious land transactions. If Nitish forms a coalition with BJP, it will be a big gain for it. Bihar has a 100 million population and 40 seats in the parliament. Crushing for opposition parties including Congress.

Nitish Kumar/BJP wins the vote in Bihar Assembly 131/108. Gujarat Congress legislators abandoning the sinking ship and joining BJP - 6 so far. Former Chief Minister of Gujarat/Congress Chief Shankar Singh Vaghela has already resigned from Congress.

RAMESWARAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Rameshwaram on Thursday was marked by an unusual sight - the AIADMK black-red-white flags and the saffron BJP flags alternating on the roadside. It was a sign that many read as an indication of the reducing distance New Delhi and Chennai.
The Prime Minister had gone to inaugurate the mausoleum in Memory of former Indian President, APJ Abdul Kalam.

Of course religion and politics can be combined. After all we are human beings most of whom are guided by spirituality. I was therefore wrong to think otherwise. It is always nice to know what is happening in our motherland even when I am settled in the United Kingdom. Keep posting such news @Aupmanyav.

Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, the BJP nominee for the post of Vice-President of India, has won the election securing 516 (67%) votes as against 244 (33%) votes for the opposition candidate Mr. Gopala Krishna Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi's grandson).

With this, all top elected positions in India are with BJP, the President and Vice-President, as well as that of the Prime Minister. BJP has an absolute majority in the Lower House, and is the largest party (though not the majority) in the Upper House. Jai Sri Rama.

Janta Dal (United) led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is the latest to join BJP ruling combine (National Democratic Alliance). Nitish is respected as a honest and efficient Chief Minister, a welcome addition to the NDA and support to Prime Minister Modi. It is possible that All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhgham (AIDMK), the ruling party in Tamilnadu may soon join NDA. The latest position in India:

The Supreme Court of India has ruled the Indian practice of 'Triple Talaq' among Muslims as unconstitutional. A Muslim man gets a divorce by just saying the word 'Talaq' thrice or even doing that by letter, e-mail, FB or Whatsapp. The court has asked the government to frame rules within six months. This affects more than 80 million Muslim women of India.
