Would You Fly On A Chinese Made Jetliner?

The first large Chinese-made passenger jetliner completed its maiden test flight on Friday,
a milestone in China's long-term goal to break into the Western-dominated aircraft market.

The takeoff of the C919 bought cheers and applause from hundreds of invited guests at Shanghai
Pudong International Airport and was broadcast live on Chinese state television. The jet soon
became invisible on a windy and polluted day in Shanghai, which was also in the path of dense
sandstorms from the north.

Anyone who has ever bought Harbor Freight (aka "Horrible Freight") tools knows that
Chinese made goods are often poor quality or even fake products....wrenches which
bend or break in normal light usage....products which look like the western brands they
rip off, but don't actually work. Now, these same people build a jet passenger plane.
I ain't set'n foot on one!

I am sorry, but are you saying Harbor Freight built the jetliner?

I've ridden and driven higher end Chinese motorcycles and cars.
There's nothing wrong with their top-shelf stuff. Nothing at all.
There are some companies which produce acceptable products.
But the country is awash in barely functioning imitations of western brands.
A friend was involved in Americastanian companies who had components
manufactured there. It's a major problem to force them to meet quality
standards.

Most "Western brands" are made in China, too.

I'm sure you'd find that any airplane assembled in Europe or North America is chock-full of Chinese-made parts, so if you don't trust the reliability of Chinese stuff, you'll probably have to give up flying altogether.

Chinese made parts can be of quality.
But they've a pervasive culture of trying to skirt that.
Individual parts can be controlled more easily that a highly complex system like a jetliner.

Note: Many bicycles made in China are great.
Price is a clue to quality.

I don't disagree. I'm simply saying that they cater to many different markets - like all manufacturers - and for their higher-end markets they produce better quality products.

As a motorcycle and scooter enthusiast, I could not wait to get my hands on some of the new models that came out a few years, specifically by CF Moto and Zongshen. Depending on their supplier for some parts, the casting process was horrible. On one CF Moto, I was able to actually break the thermostat housing apart in my hands... A reorder and only $6 later, I had a perfectly cast part.

That's a small example, but it explains the process perfectly.

This is one of their newer beasts, and it's a haus!

Oh, sure....it looks good.
But how long to you think a paper mache muffler will last?

Just kidding!

Ya, that does not tell me squat about the craftsmanship of the jetliner.
It might be a fine machine.
I'm just suspicious of a country which foists so many bad products upon us.
Why don't you fly in one, & we'll see how it goes?

Too bad you weren't that skeptical about presidential candidates.

You are just a bit racist against the Chinese is what it is.

He meant to say that the Chinese government has enacted policies or enacted lack of regulations to lessen quality control of their products.

Baby food is one extreme example.

And to make this further political, Trump and his administration are doing the same by cutting many environmental and pro customer regulations so companies can further reduce their costs. The cost has to come at someone's expense.

Not only am I extremely skeptical of your mind reading powers but he is a big boy and I am sure he can speak for himself.

If they want to compete seriously in that market, they couldn't afford to cut corners on quality and safety.
This.

It just ain't that easy to make a plane that is economically viable and "sort of" trustworthy.

For one thing, it would backfire economically. Badly.

Opinion: Its the result of rapid industrialization, which historically cheapens the value of laborers and respect for craftsmanship. They will recover eventually, but the quality of the jetliners is currently questionable to someone who doesn't know who is building and maintaining them.

If you produce an inexpensive but low quality tool that's prone to break after prolonged use, the response would be along the lines of "What a piece of crap, but whatever, it was only a few dollars." However, if you have a passenger jet that's plummeting from the sky, the response would be quite different.
