Terrified of becoming an atheist again

Spiderman

Veteran Member
As an atheist, I would kill myself. I have tried to be an atheist and it lead to me having nothing to live for but drugs and pleasure. It eventually lead to me stabbing a man and I found God in jail. If I knew there was no God, I would end this life and do society a favor.

I'm terrified of who I am without the creator. I am terrified to think of what will become of me if I become an atheist again.

I'm convinced that the voice inside me telling me to be good to others, think positively, renounce and reject the toxic thoughts, forgive others, be meek, humble, charitable, peaceful, and simple is God and spirit-guides directing me.

I'm too scared I'd hurt other people if I didn't believe in God and spirits.

Even as an atheist, wouldn't you agree that for certain people, having belief in God can be healthy? It can motivate them to do good works, be kind to others, forgive, avoid hurting others, and also give them the joy and peace to not hurt themselves

If I don't believe there are spirits guiding me, I'm a dangerous person.

I believe that all there is is the material world and that it essentially doesn't matter if I'm humble, peaceful, forgiving, and kind to people. Either way, I'm just going to die and not be held accountable for my actions and life becomes a selfish three ring circus **** show where I just live for the moment and pleasure and don't care about morals.

Why not just realize that voice inside of you is *you*? Clearly, you know what you should do. So go do it. Go ahead and listen to that voice. Have confidence in yourself.

My main path has been to reason out and rationalize why it makes sense to be a good person, and there are plenty of reasons - none of which need to involve God.

A lot of religious folks point to the history and perseverance of religion and religious beliefs throughout many cultures throughout time as a hallmark of the "truth" that spirituality is a big part of being human. Well, I take a different tack on all that and say that even older is the struggle to understand what it means to "be good" as a human being, and that "being good" is an even more basic concept that many humans (whether religious or not) try and instill in their lives and livelihood.

So, my belief is that the advent of a "religion" is mostly an attempt to find the goodness in the people adhering to the belief set, help them find the goodness in themselves and to spread that "goodness" to the other corners of the culture.

People are generally happier when doing what they feel is right, and what they know will make the people around them trust them, believe in them and hold them up in love. I don't know where the idea comes from that "religion" or "spirituality" need be involved in that in some way... because we are all perfectly capable of doing what we know we won't regret - and that's nearly all it takes.

I can relate, but I did resolve it for myself about 15 years ago, and you can see what my approach is by reading the signature statement at the bottom of my posts.

[BTW, the added advantage of this position is how could I possibly be wrong? :)]

not too sure about this......but you have fear in the lead ?.....?

I have posted many times before....the heart is fickle
if your feelings are in the lead, you could turn about for no reason
just because you felt like it

I can be quoted......
if your hand does anything at all
It's because you thought you should
or because you felt like it

I prefer to be around people of sound reason
the heart can follow that

This post gives a lot of insight into your other regarding atheists needing to find their god.
It's called projection...

Psychological projection - Wikipedia

You'll never defeat your own demons until you embrace them and then show them the grace that your faith teaches you about... You cannot properly love others, or your god, until you love even the dirtiest parts of yourself. Don't do good because god scares you to. Do good because you know you have the ability to do so and because you want to be better. Let your faith be your muse, if you must. But be honest with yourself.

Let me offer a second opinion here.
If you've only got one life to live, with no hope of future redemption, then isn't it in your best interest to be the best person possible now, as opposed to in the unknown future? Living recklessly in a world where there is no afterlife means your experiences are direct result of your choices. Bad situations and bad feelings then become a part of your bad choices. Good situations and good feelings likewise follow good choices.

Many things can make us temporarily happy. Drugs, sex, and rock-n-roll can be loads of fun for a while. And they can even serve as nice escapes when used properly. But if that's all your only life is based on, then it's going to hollow and fruitless. That's true with or without god. You'll never have a chance to experience the deep love of a real companion or the life-changing joy of parenthood if all you ever do is bang whores and snort coke, right? Again, this is true with or without god.

So live as if there is a god. Use that as motivation to stay on the right path if you need to. But always be aware that it's your choices which create the situations that you find yourself in - not the other way around.

I can't. If it's just me I'm hopeless, deceived, and delusional

If you need it, stick with it. It's your life. You have to do what's best for you.

As an atheist myself, I'm not against God. I'm just waiting for God to make himself known. If you choose a belief, I feel you are actually limiting the possibility of God to a few narrow concepts. Without evidence any which of those concepts you could be wrong about.

Being an atheist, you're giving God an open door to correct any misconceptions about him.

I understand it.
May God help you in your good deeds and to be a good human being having a positive attitude in the life.
I appreciate it.

Your problems and situation are, clearly, well beyond any philosophical or theological cause or basis. You need to worry about whatever pharmaceutical, therapeutic, psychological, and/or cognitive tools can be utilized to try to bring you some kind of balance and equanimity.

Atheism/theism are nothing more than results and side-effects of your other issues, and don't cause or lead to anything in and of themselves.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
It's interesting in light that theistic views oftentimes follows the same lines of detriment as those without. People act just as bad.

It's really one's own demeanor that leads towards a beneficial or destructive path in life.

However, if an iconic deity serves better than without for someone, a belief is not going to affect how the universe works.

I was caught by your being terrified and hope that this poem by Rosemary Harris might help:

My companion is fear
Walking behind me like a shadow.
He sees obstacles where none are,
He knows death as disintegration,
He comes from hell to cherish me
Saying 'turn right,' 'turn left,'
'Look, there is a lion in the road
And no resurrection.'

Yet I will make my torturer
My dear companion.
For in acceptance he grows honest,
Showing that a skeleton is only bones
And one moment no longer than another
And pain only sensation
Like the color of the rose,
Less than the falling of a leaf.

See, I shall turn my head,
Diminish him with pity,
Kill him with understanding
Even love . . .
Looking him in the eye
I shall observe his dwindling
Because he is only a shadow
Lost between me and the sun.

When I'm an Atheist I act way WAY differently.

Also, I'm getting professional help and medications. Prayer works better.

I'm sorry that you give so much unnecessary weight to the matter of belief in the existence of a God, @PopeADope

You deserve better than feeling so much pointless sorrow.

Be at peace.
