DIR Forums Take Two

It's a bit difficult for me to decide which DIRs I'm not a part of xD Actually, I find reasons to check all boxes but the Abrahamic DIR and the Non-Revealed Religions DIR: I'm an
  • agnostic (Non-Theist)
  • advaita (Pantheism, Dharmic?)
  • Satanist/Vamacari (LHP, Neopagan?, Dharmic?)
  • who likes to mix several pantheons (Syncretic, Neopagan?),
  • studies the occult (Other Movements & Practices)
  • and also identifies as a Discordian (New Religious Movements).
  • Additionally I'm quite interested in Arimanism and certain kinds of Gnosticism, and could even be considered a Gnostic, depending on the definition (Other Revealed Religions).
I hope you won't behead me but I'll check those all, even though I may not make use of my access to most.

We're looking at a way to do this, like posting outside your selected DIR flags a mod to approve the post and make sure it's a respectful question. Still ironing out the kinks, nothing set in stone yet.

Thank you for this clarification. I'm sorry if it's already been addressed, but how long after selecting our DIRs should we be able to participate?

No problem. Brent said it might take an hour or so for the system to update. :)

I'd just like to remind people that Syncretic DIR is a thing. It's under-utilized, in spite of us having many syncretists here. What I would suggest for folks like @Liu is to hop in on syncretist area and select one other main DIR, maybe two.

Do you base permissions on our religion title? Cause I know yall not going through the history of my posts. :p um right?

Thanks for the improved policy. I think that the subforum restriction idea is a bad one, it just gets too meticulous at that point.

Well just as a potential example we've got Jews posting in Muslim DIR and vice versa, not to mention vehemently anti Muslim Christians being allowed to post in Muslim DIR, we've got Satanists signing up as Abrahamic religions, claiming Lucifer is Abrahamic, then I don't know much about the other side of pagan/ LHP beliefs etc, but it seems members are signing up to be members of every remotely Pagan/LHP DIR imaginable, the net result is way more people now have access to muck about in someone else's DIR than with the old rules, and the moderators job, policing all this, just got way more difficult?????

Do you comprehend what a potential example is, that is one that may happen in the future!!

Right. Just the way you worded it made it sound as though it was already happening. My mistake. I.e. "We've got" as in 'we have got' Jews posting in the Muslim DIR.

Well the Satanist? signing up in Abrahamic DIR has already happened.

Could we possibly have drop down menus for each DIR so that, if we want, we can select specific sub-DIRs? I mean I've got Non-Revealed Religions DIR and Other Revealed Religions selected because of the influence Zoroastrianism & Taoism respectively have on my religious outlook. I don't want or need access to the Confucian or Gnostic DIRs to be able to post in the Zoroastrian & Taoist ones.

I feel fairly confident that the rules still apply. A Christian trolling the Jews is still going to get modded. It is just less likely to be an accident and easier for the mods to deal with.

Do you base permissions on our religion title?

That's how we tended to operate before, but a bunch of members put extremely uninformative things under "religion" or nothing there at all. That basically leaves the staff team guessing "does this person belong in this DIR or not?" We've wanted for a long time a system that forces people to identify with DIRs to remove that headache. As @columbus just said, this system makes it a lot less likely folks will post in those areas by accident. And yes, @columbus , we will definitely still be moderating folks within these broad categories that are posting in spaces they shouldn't. I already floated having more checkboxes by Brent backstage. At the very least, our DIR structure really wasn't set up for this kind of system and may need some tweaking.

That's definitely big bonus to this, but also a big downside. I mean, what if one is browsing a DIR they are not a member of, and something strikes them? They won't even be allowed to ask questions on the topic, to educate himself on it?
Very true. There are things to be learned reading over the DIR threads, and sometimes it even starts a spin-off thread.

I do have access now.

To Mods: However, I noticed the Hellenismos board doesn't have any posts (I don't recall it being empty).

We didn't actually have such a board before. What we had was this forum area - Sacred Texts, Folklore, and Mythology - which I moved out of the DIR space and into Comparative Religion a few months ago. A lot of the posts in the mythology folklore would be rule-violating in a DIR space, so it was easier to just leave them outside of a DIR and create a clean forum. The number of threads I had to manually move around when I kicked mythology out of the DIR was annoying enough as it was... lol.

I was wondering what had happened to all the Mythology subforums. Good to know!
