How would I choose even if I wanted to?

Let's say I want to follow the word of God.
One does have to wonder why. The whim is predicated on the idea that there is indeed a bona fide "word of god" in existence even though all we have are fairly shabby portrayals of all too human god(s). If you can get past that first "smell test" then you will be happily on your way to the next step which is determining which is the truth and which is simply delusional swill.

How would I know which religion / denomination is the true one?
Their marketing brochures will be enticing, that much is sure. Try an experiment first. Try to believe that the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are in fact real, genuine beings, not just idolization's within the minds of children. If you can pull that one off, again, you will have made great strides on your way to being god's little smurf/smurfette.

If you have the right heart condition, God will find you. But don't be fooled...he doesn't frequent the obvious places.
God has always favored the unpopular minority, so look in the most unlikely place and he might just be there. ;)

Oh, and listen with your heart, not just your ears. In this world, nothing is as it seems.

There is the problem:- "Let's say I want to follow the word of God."

Unless you search with all your heart...want to know the truth how can you ever find it?
No matter what people tell you, it all begins with you and your heart.

The parable of the seed scatterer and what happens to the seed.

Truth only bears fruit in a good soil/heart.

You have to love truth and want the truth to know the difference.

Well first things first you'd have to establish a reason to think God exists. Then you'd have to try and figure out what kind of God it is or possibly what kind of gods they are. You'd have to demonstrate that God or gods would even be willing to interact with humans and why. You'd have to then decide from there if god would give you any sort of religion or if it's pretty much irrelevant.

You have so much work to do before you can even reasonably say God has a word on earth. Lets be honest here if you don't have faith then you are never going to get an answer because the answer without faith Is that God doesn't exist and this is all mere superstition. You have to have that faith before you can even get anywhere beyond the negative answer with this sort of thing.

Why would God care what you do exactly? Why would God make it so there is only one right way to worship him when he's already made you know... thousands if not millions of religious groups? IT kinda seems like random nonsense to me.

This question takes a series of questionable premises as givens.

Is that the intent? Do you want answers that take it for granted that there is exactly one God, that it somehow saw fit to give humanity its Word, and that there is a true religion and denomination among several others that are not?

Rumi:

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened.

Don't open the door to the study and begin reading.
Take down a musical instrument;
Let the beauty we love be what we do.

There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground."

so in other words man can tell God how he will be worshiped ?
In the sense that God accepts all worship, yes. There is a classic Rumi story where Moses found a shepherd telling God that he, the shepherd, wanted to comb God's hair etc. Moses told the shepherd that was wrong, that was not God's nature. The shepherd repented. But God replied to Moses:

God's voice:
You have separated me from one of my own. Did you come as a Prophet to unite, or to sever?
I have given each being a separate and unique way of seeing and knowing that knowledge.
What seems wrong to you is right for him.
What is poison to one is honey to someone else.
Purity and impurity, sloth and diligence in worship,
these mean nothing to me.
I am apart from all that.
Ways of worshipping are not to be ranked as better
or worse than one another.
Hindus do Hindu things.
The Dravidian Muslims in India do what they do.
It's all praise, and it's all right.
It's not me that's glorified in acts of worship.
It's the worshipers! I don't hear the words
they say. I look inside at the humility.
That broken-open lowliness is the reality,
not the language! Forget phraseology.
I want burning, 'burning'....

Is there a bona fide "word of God"? Sure there is - the Bible
The Lord Jesus said this:

John 17:17 New International Version (NIV)
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

Jesus is not God and there is no such thing as the Trinity

Definitely - try an experiment first - that is why you have to stand on the crossroad - check them all out as the bible says:

1 John 4:1-2 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Dear friends, don’t believe everyone who claims to have the Spirit of God. Test them all to find out if they really do come from God. Many false prophets have already gone out into the world, and you can know which ones come from God. His Spirit says that Jesus Christ had a truly human body.

God's little smurf and smurffette? Hehehe!

Maybe but how is this one?

1 Corinthians 4:10-13 New International Version (NIV)

We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.

What makes your bible more relevant and true than the Hindu vedas?
