Quotes from Famous Freethinkers

“In the melting pot called America, we are one nation under the Constitution … but not one nation under God. Given how the religious right opposes the teaching of evolution or any scientific and social view that conflicts with a literal interpretation of the Bible, we are really becoming one nation undereducated. And that is not an American value to be proud of.”~ Herb Silverman, president of the Secular Coalition for America

True, we are a Republic governed by a Constitution. I believe the clause 'under God' was an addition by Eisenhower. While religious freedom is guarantied by the Constitution, so is freedom from religion. This undereducated nation elected as president, one who 'loves the poorly educated'!

When I was born in 1953, "in god we trust" wasn't our motto (added 1956) and "under god" wasn't in our pledge (added 1954).

We were "one nation indivisible" instead of one nation divided by gods.

And we believe in e pluribus unum -- out of many voices, many religions, many peoples, we become one.

Dang, you're old!
I remember when prayer was required in public schools.
I was a less than ideal student.

"If an all-powerful god either caused the earthquake in Haiti or stood passively by as thousands perished, he would be a god more worthy of blame than praise. Some days the best thing you can say about God is that he doesn't exist." ~ Dr. Herb Silverman

“Truth does not demand belief. Scientists do not join hands every Sunday, singing,‘Yes, gravity is real! I will have faith! I will be strong! I believe in my heart that what goes up, up, up must come down, down, down. Amen!’ If they did, we would think they were pretty insecure about it.”~ Dan Barker

“I should not believe in the Gospel if I had not the authority of the Church for so doing.” (St. Augustine, against the epistle entitled ”Of the Foundation” [ed. Vives, vol xxv, p. 435]: “Ego vero Evangelio non crederem, nisi me catholicae ecclesiae commoveret auetoritas ... Ego me ad eos teneam, quibus praecipientibus Evangelio credidi.”)

How about posting some of your favorite quotes that speak to non-theism, Humanism, freethought, etc.

I'm not looking for a lot of discussion here, just some positive quotes that you like.
Hey, Thumper! How about, "If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say nothin' at all."

And why is faith considered some kind of virtue? Is it because it implies a certain depth of contemplation and insight? I don't think so. Faith, by definition, is unexamined. So in that sense it has to be among the shallowest of experiences. Yet, if it could, it would regulate every action, word and thought of every single person on this planet, because, let's not forget, even an impure thought is a sin." - Pat Condell

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
