If god was female

If god had been created as a female by the authors of the Bible instead of a male, would women have been treated very differently over the centuries? In my opinion, god was only given the male gender because in the ancient world men were considered to be superior to the female.

If any god does exist it is more likely to be genderless.

Women featured in the Bible aren't treated well on the whole, but as reproductive machines for the most part. Solomon's many concubines obviously played a big part in keeping his dangly bits busy! Did they do it willingly, or more likely did they have no say in the matter? Whilst most Christian women these days demand to be treated as equal to men, more extreme male members of the faith still expect them to be subservient to their wishes using the Bible as an excuse.

There is very little woman can't do that men can, and visa versa. You never know, one day men might evolve enough to become pregnant!

Is there anyone on this forum who thinks men and women should stay trapped in the traditional roles society and religion had placed upon them?

Read my signature, I believe God is more of a female force than a male one.

Since gender is only for procreation, you are correct. Angels too are genderless.

It wasn't that males were superior at all. It was that someone needed to be the driver of the family unit. We know why cars only have one steering wheel and one set of controls. The man was to take responsibility for the rest of his family. His wife as 'navigator' and him as the driver makes sense. Know your role and do what you are supposed to do within that role. Women were not useless or inferior according to Proverbs 31:10-31 She was valued more than corals.....which in Bible times was more precious than gold.

Women featured in the Bible aren't treated well on the whole, but as reproductive machines for the most part. Solomon's many concubines obviously played a big part in keeping his dangly bits busy! Did they do it willingly, or more likely did they have no say in the matter?

After the fall in Eden, women were to be subjected to their husbands. Some men apparently took advantage of their 'headship' role and turned into somewhat of a dictatorship....this is not the way things were with those mentioned in the Bible as faithful servants of God. Abraham and Sarah for example.....she respected her husband as head of the family, but when she had concerns, she voiced them.....but never disrespectfully. That appears to be missing in a lot of relationships these days. Many others mentioned had a similar attitude and it worked well for them. Understanding concubinage in Bible times, ensured that a woman had a home and family that cared for her. The menfolk did not live to a great age after the flood, so women were sometimes short on husbands. This arrangement also increased the population substantially.

Women were Solomon's undoing. The Israelites were warned not to take foreign wives because of inevitable religious compromise....and that is exactly what happened. Solomon died alienated from his God because of false worship that was introduced by his foreign wives.

Whilst most Christian women these days demand to be treated as equal to men, more extreme male members of the faith still expect them to be subservient to their wishes using the Bible as an excuse.

God does not accept excuses. Jesus said that a man must treat his wife as he treats himself....as Jesus treated the congregation. He was patient and kind and even when he had cause to complain, he never berated them or belittled them. He treated them as his close friends and companions.

There is very little woman can't do that men can, and visa versa. You never know, one day men might evolve enough to become pregnant!

That will never work. Men would never go through the process twice. Its bad enough when they get a cold.

Not unless they want to please the God who set the rules. The traditional roles worked quite well in the old days when families actually ate dinner together and spoke to one another....women stayed home to raise the babies. Mom looked after the home and Dad earned a living so that they had food on the table and a pleasant home environment to live in. They may not have had much materially but most of them were content. You think today's families are united and happy? Look again.....they might have a lot materially, but they are more miserable and isolated than they have ever been. Depression is sweeping the world like a plague.

Give me traditional any day....at least kids knew who their parents were. They knew what a family was and parents knew what their children were up to most of the time. There were values and trust in a community that looked out for one another....that is all but gone now. I hate what this world has become....freedom is greatly overrated IMO.

G-d wasn't assigned a male gender because G-d is male. G-d was assigned a male gender because Semitic languages are gender specific and the word "god" is masculine.

The patriarchy made arks female to associate women with the flood and tossing boys into the river!
How would the world be different if ears of grain were female?
Imagine a world where dew was female.

This is my perspective on gender and God.

God the Father is represented as male because the male gender represents generation.
He is responsible for the original movement or energy that began the process of creation.
And of course Mother God (the Spirit brooding over the waters) takes it from there doing all of the rest of the work, while Father God kicks back and rests, waiting for all of his children to be weened and return home.
It is from Mother God that comes the breath of life.
Gender is in everything.

The idea of A Mother and Father God is right there in the creation story in Genesis.
The fact is, that it has been ignored when it comes to the teachings of the church.
To the point that many of the protestant churches are in fact ignorant of the gender of God.
Anyone can see how keeping this knowledge hidden would create a male dominated world.

There is not the slightest shred of evidence the creation story is anymore than a less than credible myth, or that any god exists.

Yeah, this would make sense to me, if there is a god at all. But as you say, men were running the society back then and they wrote their history and mythology in their own favor. "He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past."

I'm not sure what the percentage is on this. I don't know that many men, even Christian men, who expect their wives to be totally subservient.

I don't think men will ever become pregnant. Even a sex-change operation can't bring that about.

Is there anyone on this forum who thinks men and women should stay trapped in the traditional roles society and religion had placed upon them?

Not me, although I've observed that a lot of people seem to gravitate towards those roles just the same, even if they're no longer required to.

All I know is one, rome is a male dominant society. At least at that time and two it maks more sense the creator is female. Females give birth to creation. They take of the household. Even their husbands. They are natural nurturers and maternal instinct. Its more personal and less political and it makes more sense if using creation as a reflection of the creator.

A male just aint cuttin it. Sounds ego.

I think that Yahweh favored males because he is more like a male. After all he made all of the angels to be masculine rather than feminine.

So there are two creators? o_O
Yes and no.
There is one who generates (male) and one who receives (female).
It is the Female aspect however that broods over the waters and does the actual work of creating.
The male did his work by and so he rests, waiting for his children to be weened and come home.

You don't think there is a female principle represented in the Bible in equal standing with Yahweh?
I would think that angels could represent either gender.
I think it would likely depend on the person they were revealing themselves to whether or not they took on a male or female representation.

Have you read it in the Hebrew?
