What is wrong with smashing the idols?

When Prophet Muhammad finally conquered Mecca in 631 AD, he allegedly entered the Ka'ba and destroyed the 360 idols in its precincts shouting
"Falsehood is destroyed, truth prevails".

Destructive behaviour is the opposite of a peaceful nature. No wonder Muslims go around destroying temples and holy places with no respect for other beliefs and cultures.

How can those idols be a benefit to you?

Clearly numerous religions see a purpose in idols so when you destroy them, it is like if I were to destroy something that you believe is holy.
Just as you would be horrified by someone burning your scripture, another will be horrified if you destroy their idols. Have some respect! What's wrong with practicing one's religion without interfering with someone else's religion? Such lack of respect is the opposite of peaceful behaviour.

The World Trade Center was the idol of capitalism, freedom, and other things to many people. Destroying it was the right thing to do, right, Soviet Child?

Where the idols of polytheists not at war with the Prophet destroyed in early Islam? Egypt is largely Muslim and yet the Sphynx, pharoah's tombs etc still stand.

A picture is worth more than a 1000 words. Then an idol is worth more than 100,000. They can, and do pack more meaning and understanding than entire volumes of writing. Of course its possible that Islam has kept you illiterate in terms of how to read images, sculptures and idols. But then you are no different than a simpleton who can't read, does not understand the value of books and use the pages as kindling for fire (as the Barbarians who sacked Rome allegedly did).

What is wrong with smashing the idols?

Finally! Finally you make a thread asking what is wrong with something that is actually wrong. I've been waiting for this! I didn't think it would ever actually happen.

Again, so what? That would make you my enemy and I wish you death. (Not you, personally, but people in general who are like that.) There will always be filthy, degraded types who don't value that which is numinous and greater and grander than them. Others who have Virtue need to be on the lookout for them. They are plagues, like with the Taliban and ISIS.

Someone didn't get the joke.

In freedom loving countries, personal property is protected by law. Most churches or temples, under law, are no different than private property. Destruction of idols is punishable. So people who promote it ought to be on a 'watch list', and this forum is not immune to that.

It's a connection to the past. It's important for humans to be aware of their own history and to preserve as much knowledge as possible.

I suppose the reverse question can be asked: How does smashing the idols be any benefit to you? What harm do they cause?

What is wrong with smashing the idols? I have smashed one and then trashed it, also I once throw the cross away. Have you ever smashed an idol?

Prophet Abraham once said to his father Azar: "Takest thou idols for gods? For I see thee and thy people in manifest error."
You can smash anything that belongs to you, just don't smash something that belongs to someone else. Of course smashing something historical and of cultural value like ISIS and Taliban are doing is really terrible.

BTW, the veneration that many Muslims have for the Koran as a book (rather than the words in it) is a form of idolatory: Bibliolatry - Wikipedia . Which is why they get every upset when someone burns a Koran anywhere in the world

You're insulting the religion of others. Even though I'm not a Christian anymore, I won't damage or discard my crucifixes, rosaries, holy cards, etc. out of respect for the holy objects of another religion. Just like I washed my hands and pronounced "Bismillah" before touching a Qur'an.

It's the difference between a totalitarian mindset and a pluralistic mindset; showing respect for others or disrespecting them.

When Moses came down the mountain with the tablets of stone, which was the idol, the golden calf or the tablets of stone?
