Baltic vs Slavic: What's the difference?

ronki23

Well-Known Member
I was just curious what the difference was between Baltic and Slavic people and countries are. Which countries are Baltic and which Slavic?

I thought:

Baltic: Germany, Hungary, Austrian, Bulgarian
Slavic: Russian, Slovakian, Ukrainian

Where do Latvian, Lithuanian, Croatian, Czech, Romanian and Polish fit in?

Were Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia ever part of USSR? Did they get along? Why did they break apart?

Slavs: Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Poles, Croats, Serbs, Russians, Bulgarians, Ukranians, modern Macedonians.
Baltics: Latvia, Lithuania

Austria and Germany are Germanic people.
Hungary is Finno-Ugric-- a category they share only with the Finns and Estonians, who also speak this form of language.

Romanians are Latin with some Slav admixture. Their language is Latin derived.

Czechosovakia was a part of the USSR until 1989 when they had 'The Velvet Revolution', where they basically split from the rapidly deteriorating USSR.

Yugoslavia was a Communist State run by this guy Marshal Tito; he wasn't on the best terms with the USSR and the Yugoslav State was quickly expelled from the Cominform.

Not that correct.

Estonians aren't Baltic people they also speak a Finno-Urgric language.
And Austria and Germany may have Celtic history but that completely and absolutely vanished when the Germanic people pushed them away. There is nothing Celtic left.

Aren't they? My mistake!

But if Russians and Polish are both Slavs, why do they hate each other? Same applies for Ukranians and Polish during Chimielniki period.

And I know of Latvians and Lithuanians who speak Russian.

Finally, if Hitler wanted Slavs to be exterminated, why was Slovakia part of the Axis and more importantly, why so many Neo Nazis from Slovakia and Russia?

Romanians are half Latin , half Slavic? Romanians don't get along with Slovakians and a Romanian I know speaks Latvian

Because wars can happen between any countries?

I can't tell you about Nazis.

So? Anyone can learn a language.

Where are you going with this?

This just in, countries wage war between each other.

Do tell.

Because stuff happened.

Because people are stupid.

No one really gets along with Romanians.
I am not English yet I speak English, wow crazy.

Actually I wouldn't be so quick to disregard the latter. From what I could tell from studying history (been studying the middle ages in general the past 6 years. Loving the migration period right now) the Germanic tribes in Austria merely migrated over, so to speak.
If you look at France, Spain, Germany, British Isles, etc. each area usually has a specific and defined Germanic people who inhabited it. Mainland France - Franks, Burgundy - Burgundians & Alamanni, Normandy - Norwegians & Other Scandinavians in the Viking Age, etc.
So I think the Celtic heritage is still there in Austria, especially since it is considered the birthplace of the Proto-Celtic Hallstatt culture. Germany obviously is just as Germanic as any other Germanic Nation in Europe (for now), but from what I read, there is a large following of Druidry and Celtic Culture in Austria, dedicated to its Hallstatt past.

Romanians are half Latin , half Slavic? Romanians don't get along with Slovakians and a Romanian I know speaks Latvian

Romanians are descendants of the Dacians, so I hear, despite the language they speak. Dacians - Wikipedia

Because race is a largely meaningless social construct that doesn't really do anything?

Finally, if Hitler wanted Slavs to be exterminated, why was Slovakia part of the Axis
Because it was politically expedient?

and more importantly, why so many Neo Nazis from Slovakia and Russia?
Because soul-crushing stupidity isn't a genetic characteristic.

lol what?
A large following? You have the same rise in Austria like everywhere else in Europe. Its a trend among certain people but to call it large is crazy.

You also ignore the 500 years of Roman Austria during which the La Tene culture (Celts) diminished from the Continent until the Romans were pushed back and then the Bavarii settled down in Austria and obviously Bavaria.

There is nothing in the general culture that is close to anything Celtic. Just because they don't destroy cultural Artifacts from a long-gone age doesn't mean that they do so because its still their culture.
And all these Pagan cults are Neo-Pagan. They don't have an unbroken line to Celtic or Germanic Paganism. Like anywhere in Europe.

What I meant to ask was WHY the Poles were sold out against Russia in WWII and Ukraine during Chimielniki's reign when they too were Slavic?

Bulgaria too was an Axis power right? So Bulgaria and Slovakia were allied with the Nazis even though Hitler would've had them gassed if he won

Also I ask why a Romanian knows Latvian and a Latvians and Lithuanians know Russian, but Slovakians don't. Heck, a Kazakhstani girl I know speaks Russian. A Slovakian I know also speaks some Polish but not Russian...

And the Poles I know are extremely patriotic, with a borderline superiority complex and I find associating them with Russians annoys the hell out of them (a great way to bring them down to Earth)

Notions of "race" and "nation" only became important from 1800 onward. As far as why the Soviets sold Poland down the river, well, neither Germany nor the USSR was happy with the shape Poland took post Versailles. So they fixed that.

Bulgaria too was an Axis power right? So Bulgaria and Slovakia were allied with the Nazis even though Hitler would've had them gassed if he won
Yeah. Most people assumed Hitler would've made exceptions for various groups that aided him. This was the rationale a number of small Polish groups used when collaborating with the Nazis. That they were wrong did not occur to them.

Also I ask why a Romanian knows Latvian and a Latvians and Lithuanians know Russian, but Slovakians don't. Heck, a Kazakhstani girl I know speaks Russian. A Slovakian I know also speaks some Polish but not Russian..
Nations are made up of individuals, they are not monoliths of uniformity. You'd do well to remember that.

And the Poles I know are extremely patriotic, with a borderline superiority complex and I find associating them with Russians annoys the hell out of them (a great way to bring them down to Earth)
I don't see how this is important to anything we've been discussing.

Austria and Germany are Germanic people.
I am from Austria and I think we rather were Celts that Germanics.
But during the times of the Habsburg empire lots of people from East Europe came to Austria, so I think the DNA of the average Austrian is a mixture of varous influences.
No pure race here. ;)

Probably because not everything comes down to ethnicity....

You don't know that because it didn't come to that. So you can pretty much assume whatever you want.

Also I ask why a Romanian knows Latvian

Probably because he studied the language...

and a Latvians and Lithuanians know Russian

Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were annexed by the USSR. The official language of the USSR was Russian. Furthermore the USSR shipped Russians into these areas to suppress the natives.
Its not rocket science.

but Slovakians don't

Older Slovakians probably do because it was their first foreign language in school.
And any Slovakian can speak Russian if he/she studies the language. A concept which apparently is too much for you to handle.

Heck, a Kazakhstani girl I know speaks Russian.

So what? Kazakhstan was part of the USSR. One of the official languages of Kazakhstan is Russian.

A Slovakian I know also speaks some Polish but not Russian...

So what? Slovakia is closer to Poland than Russia. Makes kinda sense.

And the Poles I know are extremely patriotic, with a borderline superiority complex and I find associating them with Russians annoys the hell out of them (a great way to bring them down to Earth)

What? The West-Slavs hate the East-Slavs? Oh man I wonder where that is coming from...
Have you ever read a history book?

Ugh. There is no "pure race" anywhere. Austria was as much used as a staging ground for wars than the rest of Germany.
The only difference being that if you are from Northern Germany the chances are bigger that your ancestor was raped by someone from Scandinavia than from the Mediterranean.
In Austrias, Switzerlands, Bavarias, Badens and Württembergs case this is reversed due to Geography.

And I dare you to find Celtic culture in Southern Germany including Austria and Switzerland.

What I meant was, given that Austria is the birthplace of the Proto-Celtic Hallstatt culture, and that in Britain and Gaul the Romans didn't outright genocide and replace the population, it is logical to assume there is some Celtic genetic influence in Austria.
There were Romans writing about what Gauls are like, what they look like, how they act compared to Romans.... in the 4th century. That's 350 years after Gaul became part of Rome.
Same with artifacts that date back to long after the conquest of Gaul that are still Celtic in nature, which have been found throughout Britain and Gaul. Why should Austria be an exception?
As far as I know there's no record of mass emigration from Italia to modern day Austria in Roman history, nor any record of significant genocide there either.

SO WHAT? Russian is not THE Slavic language.

"yet Latvians, Lithuanians and Romanians DO speak Russian and aren't as bothered as the Poles"

Wrong. Just wrong. Incredibly wrong.
Poland was not part of the USSR. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were. Thus they learned Russian in school and the use of their own languages was of second importance to the USSR.
But Latvians, Lithuanians and Estonians HATE THE RUSSIANS. Just because they have ethnic Russians in their own countries doesn't mean they love Russians. Just because there are Russian speakers in these countries doesn't mean that these countries love Russia.

Holy crap how are you so weird?

And Hitler DID exterminate Slavs, just as much as Jews

Hungarians weren't Aryans. They were on Germanys side.
Finns weren't Aryans yet they were on Germanys side.
Croats weren't Aryans yet....

It's almost as if ethnicity wasn't the main concern of these people. But something further east. What was there again... oh right that huge *** Communist empire. Its almost as if these fascists had a common enemy.

Who would've thought!

And there are Slavic Neo-Nazis? Well Neo-Nazis are braindead idiots.

if Yugoslavia and Czechslovakia were Communist why weren't they part of USSR? Same reason as China I.e the leaders wanting to control their own countries?
