New Businesses & New Products!

We all see a need for a new business or product from time to time.
Tell us here!
Don't be afraid to be geeky....this is the thread for you.

I've long thought we need a line of lightweight tools for those of us who carry so
many that it adds hundreds or even thousands of pounds to a vehicle's weight.
By 100K miles, I squashed the 2 ton rear springs on me pick-up truck, & had to
upgrade to something around 3 ton.

We need a full line of lightweight tools which sacrifice no strength or function.
Some thoughts....
- Titanium is a wonderful material.....non-corroding so no plating is needed, strong, light.
But it's expensive, so the market for such tools would be too small for a company to survive.
- Carbon fiber is also great, but again it's expensive. Carbon fiber box end wrenches are available, but they have thick walls so functionality is less.
- Ratchet wrenches have forged steel bodies, but the handle could be tubular steel.
- Machine skates using steel wheels could instead use aluminum wheels with steel sleeves for tires.
They could also switch from steel to aluminum bodies.
- I already have an aluminum gantry crane. I switched out many 1" dia bolts for 1" dia aluminum (7075-T6) pins.

The difficulty here is getting the joint between the handle and tool to be reliable. Perhaps tool heads could be threaded to accept either a tubular steel handle or a solid aluminum one. (Think broom handle.)

Before I retired i had bought two large paper guillotines for the precision cutting of reams of paper.
unlike previous cast iron construction ones with huge fly wheels to generate the necessary force. These were less than a quarter of the weight with lightweight steel stand construction and precision airbed surfaces and aluminium hydraulic frames for the blades... the first of the type, that I had previously bought, could still cut repeadly to less than a tenth of a mm after 10 years of heavy use.

the same company also made a continuous heavy duty paper shredder. Surprisingly, under the sheet steel exterior, the main structure was large section laminated wood. This took the full force of the cutting cylinders with no apparent strain. Even when overloaded sufficently to stop the 3000w motor.

Threading would work, but welding would be the lightest, cheapest & strongest method.

I hope it holds together :) Looks like some stuff in the back is taped in also.

My daughter is six months pregnant. I wish someone would invent a safe way to see what the baby is doing in utero at any given time.

As it is, ultrasound technology isn't convenient or portable enough. :)

Peace be upon you.
Yes, this is interesting.
i have an old (1950s) Boyce Crane jointer which is made from a weldment instead of cast iron.
It is the best jointer I've ever used because it's lighter but quite rigid.
The only update needed is a head with segmented carbide knives.
Some day......
Just curious....What do you do with all these machines?...space station or steel-mill or digging to make tunnel across diameter of earth! [plz do not mind]

I read a story where there was a drug developed called "sweet reason" that made those who took it reasonable human beings willing to negotiate in good faith and to compromise to reach a decent outcome. I want that drug.

I want to make a very high quality, very durable, and very usable and user friendly selfie-stick and call it something like "Narci Cis Tick."
A syringe type of soldering iron, or an soldering iron sorta like a caulking gun, or something that in general makes soldering easier, would be nice.
An Android/iOS app to control Netflix with your phone or tablet.
Nueral implants that allow you to control your house (such as lights, heat, TV) and various electronic devices with your mind.
