No Chess in islam.

But really now, what if it is really forbidden in Islam? This is not harming any one!
I really doubt it is, as Muslims have been playing it for centuries, and even helped to spread it into Europe. It just seems that this time some of the political leaders took a sharp turn down "Stupid Lane" and "Forget History Avenue." It makes no sense to me why some things that have been long accepted and performed in Islamic societies are now all of a sudden forbidden, or why ISIS has destroyed so many religious sites when historically the Muslims really did nothing more than put up a sign that said "Under new management."

Nicely put.

By the way, I remember when I was little, hearing gossip that chess was indeed forbidden. Some said maybe because of the cross on the king :p

It was probably mindless gossip. People around here kept forbidding stuff out of no where. Once it spread that pokemon was forbidden and sinful, can you believe that? I can't believe how such stupid ideas see light.

so if that territory had sufficient objection to such foolish decree....
how do you over turn the authority?

That's quite the same as some preachers when I was growing up. They would have liked it to have authority to ban leather and denim jackets, skirts, television, rock music, games, washing mens and womens underwear in the same washing machine, makeup, yoga, karate, tennis...

Don't forget virtually every form of PDA that is humanly possible.

Tell that to all the people upon whom suffering up to and including death is inflicted for one of the following:
  1. Being the wrong kind of Muslim
  2. Being non-Muslim
  3. Questioning Islamic doctrine
  4. Leaving Islam
  5. Mocking, criticising or making fun of Islamic notions e.g. that non-Muslims should be forbidden from drawing Muhammed because Muslims are.

I do not translate 'Independent thought' as including 'evil thought'.
Yes .. your idea of what is evil is not as mine. I don't consider life as one huge, accidental joke!

Is your list above exhaustive? I like to debate one thing at a time, personally ..

Currently the galaxy's spookiest paraplegic
I do not translate 'Independent thought' as including 'evil thought'.

If thoughts can only accord with a pre-defined code of conduct, morality, ethics then they are not truly independent nor free. It takes a strange mind to say 'independent thought is tolerated but you can only think things that don't go against the grain'. How can you possibly consider independent thought to be encouraged in Islam, but condemn the above list; things which are sometimes the results of independent thought? That is some serious cognitive dissonance on your part.

And for clarity's sake, I should have put #1 in inverted commas to read " 'wrong kind of Muslim' " to emphasise the ridiculously subjective nature of the label.

Yes .. your idea of what is evil is not as mine.

Evidently. I don't consider slavery of the mind to be a good thing.

Neither do I. I'm not really sure why you brought this up, nor am I sure what saying it achieves.

Is your list above exhaustive? I like to debate one thing at a time, personally ..

No. No it is not. Why do you consider the five things I mentioned to be evil or the result of "evil thought"? Let's do this one thing at a time.

Gosh, and I thought Muslims were strict.

Wait, were those preachers Muslims?

Alright, kids, you can think however you please!
...so long as it doesn't go against the law of our almighty creator, that is.

It's like saying "You have freedom of speech but if you say certain words, we will kill you.
Still freedom of speech! You'll just... die...."
advice from a non-believer....how to stand and speak to the Almighty........?

fodder for a thread

Let me go a bit twitter on you with #confused.
Rephrase this in a way that doesn't require me to interpret it, please.

May as well respond to my interpretation.
If you were saying "you wouldn't know how to speak of a God because you don't believe in one" then you are correct.
I have no idea the ways of which I should speak to a god, only the ways that I would and the ways of logic.
Not willing to learn, either.

You as King can distinguish between chance and logic.
Most of your subjects have such a rudimentary sense of logic, that the game is mostly chance.
It is not a game of chance - if it was so, a grand-master and a newbie would have equal probability of winning the game. That's not the case.
After all, if the leadership is so annoyed as to make it illegal, it must mean that people
are so fascinated by the game that they are not doing their work.
A leadership that cripples free thinking and scientific thoughts.

And after all, what is so logical about spending your time playing chess?

Sure the inner workings of the game have profound logic to them,
but the game itself requires that those who are best at playing it,
must dedicate a massive portion of their lives to moving pieces
around a board in what is essentially a pointless trivial game.

Whoever spending time on this game is playing and there is no compulsion in it - it is just for pure entertainment. It doesn't provoke violence even if it means killing the pieces.
Of course, those who want excel in this game will have to spend massive time on this - because it is a skill, but that's true with any sports, any arts or any scientific research, etc, etc. - the fruits of which are enjoyed by all (except people who have been mentally crippled by their religion; especially ISLAM).
