Hello and welcome to RF, new members!

This thread is for you to ask the mods anything about RF. This can include questions about the rules, the forum history, or the different forums in general.

A note for all members: Please keep in mind that only staff members may answer questions in this thread. Any answers by non-staff members will be deleted.

Thank you,

Debater Slayer, on behalf of the RF staff.

How do you get to be a moderator?

Staff membership here is by invitation only. The current staff vote on which candidates to hire for staff positions, and then we send out the invitations when we have decided which members to hire. There are some guidelines that we go by when choosing new staff members, such as having a relatively clean infraction record, having been here for a decent amount of time (typically more than a few months at the very least), and being level-headed in one's posts.

Admins have access to more features than mods do, for running the site. Admins can change user names, for example. They also have more experience.

What is the difference between a Mod and an Admin?

In addition to what Thorbjorn said, the mods' job is to take care of reports, reply to Site Feedback threads, and oversee forum activity as much as they can to make sure that no one is breaking the rules. The main job of the admins, on the other hand, is to lay down the policies that determine which direction the forum will go in. They are responsible for writing and editing the rules, hiring and supervising staff members, and adding or removing forums as needed. They are in direct contact with the owners as well.

Will colors for restricted forums ever return?
Until then, what is their status regarding non-members?

That is up to the tech people, but hopefully the color-coding will return.

The status regarding non-members is as it was before the software transition, but we keep in mind that new members may not know which forums are exclusive (purple) and which are restricted (blue) when we're moderating.

What does DIR mean (again)? Can a response be made on a DIR is polite
and on topic showing respect?

DIR stands for "discuss individual religion." It means a forum section dedicated to the discussion of a particular belief system or theological position.

Aside from asking respectful questions, members are not allowed to post anything in a DIR they don't belong to. We used to have green DIRs before the software transition where members could make respectful, informative posts in addition to being able to ask respectful questions, but all DIRs became blue after the software transition, allowing for asking questions only for non-members of those DIRs.

I don't remember which were blue or green from before, so I just avoid'm all now.
Is there any other way to denote the differences?

We are still thinking about how to deal with the DIR rules now that they are all the same color. Maybe we will come up with a different way to denote the differences. Nothing is clear yet.

Can the restricted forum's name be changed to add a suffix denoting color?

That's exactly what I have in mind at the moment: something like [E] for exclusive forums, [R] for restricted ones, etc. We have yet to discuss this idea in the staff forums, though.
