Defining what "vampires" are, then, is the next challenge.

I think it's pretty reasonable to limit what we'd consider a "vampire" to be to a human exhibiting behaviors associated with vampire mythos in a given culture.
I'm aware of the existence of a vampire subculture that does exactly this, though I know little about it. These people may consider themselves some flavor of otherkin, but biologically, they're still 100% Homo sapiens, not some sort of other species or "supernatural" creature.

The term "energy vampire" is... well, it gets used in various occult and metaphysical communities, but they really are not the equivalent of the mythic vampire or the vampire subculture. It's basically a derogatory term used to describe people who are exhausting to be around because their personality grates on you.

I understand completely, I call vHERV infetected peoples Vampires and call Energy Vampires Energy Leechs. I do not know if Otherkin really exist but It would make sense if a lot of them are Energy Leechs.

Also to me an Energy Leech can asorb energy for other reasons for example I drain energy from crystals in Magick and from people when fighting in martial arts.

Real vampires do not sparkle, they do not live forever, they do burst into flames from sunlight, they are not effected by garlic or crosses. They have no special powers or abilities, they don't live longer than normal humans. Although they don't burst into flames from the sun, some do burn from prolonged exposure, others just tan. But they can get skin cancer from too much sun, vampires should wear sunscreen. They don't drink blood but must eat and drink normal human food. They can be killed by a wooden stake through the heart or by decapitation, but you can also kill them with a gun, poison, choking, drowning or anything else that can kill a normal human.

I know all this because I am a vampire.

Again fair enough, I personally care more for the vHERV viral theory (if you google real vampire website one of the first results should be a website with good information)

One theory is that the vampire is the lower soul of a person which, instead of dispersing after death when the higher souls moves on to where ever it goes, lingers on and draws nourishment from other living beings. A good source is John Greer's "Monsters".

Most of the literary vampire lore is just that: the traditional folklore is that the vampire
1. is not material: the corpse remains in the tomb
2. consequently does not bite (no teeth!) or drink blood
3. is not affected by religious symbols, but is affected by sunlight, iron, and certain chemicals (garlic)
4. can be stopped by destroying the corpse.
The Chinese and European traditions are very similar, right down to the use of garlic. Vampires are not reported from areas where cremation is common, or bodies are encouraged to rot.

I also think it is a very sad state of affairs that the poll mentions Twilight, but not Anne Rice, or Buffy.

(or the greatest creation of all the Vampire genre, "Forever Knight")

If there are a group of people who like to hang around near graveyards, drink blood, eat flesh and are affected by the cross, clearly there is something similar in the world. ;)

I was trying to go with what most people knew (I hate twilight) but I only have so many slots for a poll.

My grandfather is from Transylvania. His eye teeth don't seem any longer than anyone else. He was a butcher though...

You do know that vHERV is from Ultraviolet, right? A movie?

No HGV did and that movie came out in 2006 which is fairly new.....

I can kind of see where you are going.... but the HGV has little in common with vHERV and may have been invented as an EXTREME exaggeration of the truth...

I have seen vHERV symptoms pass from people to people and I wish to one day have it go through scientific examination one day..

Until that time I do not expect you to beilieve in it and righteously so I would not have either if I hadn't observed it myself.

Just dawned on me. You could say I'm a vampire. Or at least, I fit the most common traits;

Extremely pale
Problems with the sun(I've got a condition that turns sunlight into poison for me)
Blood fetish(sexual & otherwise)
Long nails
General dislike of Christianity
General "sickly" appearance
Narcissistic

Hm..

Hm..

Not sure the christianity or narcissstic part is relevant but

vHERV symptoms can include:

Anemia (which can cause pale skin)
Hemophilia (which can cause blood fetishes)
Calcium Reinforcment if the Nails (which can make the nails last long enough to be pretty long)
Insomia (which can lead to a sickly appearance)

Plus since is possible for the disease can only affect you passively if you inherit it, given with the fact that the symptoms are ussually not very extreme it is hard to tell who doesn't and who does have it.

The only reliable test is pretty dangerous....

You see if you have the dieases passively you can intake more Iron in a day than someone who doesn't but only to a slight degree and is usually still not considred abnormal.

However if you have the full blown disease, on average the infected person can intake up to 400% of the normal iron intake.... (If a normal person did this, it would be extremely hazardous and could possibly lead to death.)

In think it is possible that you may have it passively or actively.
