Sorry, but I have to laugh: they left a Swastika on a Hindu Temple? The swastika started life as a Hindu symbol of peace. What a fail.

A sad event when people can't get along together, but I imagine this was just teenagers or something, not really knowing what they were doing. Almost like an anti-authority doodle.

Fortunate that it wasn't anything more serious.

The use of the swastika and the words "get out", plus the fact that this occurred in the US, shows that it was racially motivated rather than religiously. Of course, over there you can never be sure that they know what they're doing: like the time some Nazi types attacked Sikhs, thinking the turbans meant the were Muslims!

Yes, Kirran, you're most likely correct. Either those crazy teenagers, or people acting like those crazy teenagers. But it is indicative of the ignorance about Hinduism. Some Hindu temples in North America were vandalised after 9-11 too. Lots of people thing Islam and Hinduism are basically the same thing. You'd thing the exposure to multiculturalism would lead to some basic knowledge, but not so I'm afraid. The raw foggy ignorance is still out there, just as pure crystal-clear intelligence is actually still out there.

There are cameras and a warning about them installed at the temple I go to. Substantial and unnecessary cost. The board made the decision after the hundi was stolen.

More of an integrationist take on immigrants in the US, I understand, which may be less conducive to learning about the neighbours (No, they're not allowed to be different, they're American now!). No excuse, of course.

Back when I was in school, me and a friend of mine were talking about Tibet, and its current occupation. Another friend asked what we were talking about, and upon being told 'Tibet', replied 'I don't care about that Muslim s***.'

That sort of thing (the ignorance) is almost funny ... almost, but also sad. I was reading some comments on this story, and one guy said (more or less) ... just teenagers cause they think Hindus are like ISIS because they both come from Arabia. Yeah that guy was a whole lot better. Arabia? I guess I'll have to go on a pilgrimage to those massive citadels of Saivism all over Arabia.

Edit; Didn't know this was the DIR, sorry.

Hmmm... this is the Hindu DIR, but I'm always amazed at how much non-Hindus seem to know about Hinduism. It's really astonishing. From the Bhagdad Gita to Gan ESH a to us being monotheist, Jesus an avatar, and more. Who knew really?

Edit; well crap. This is in the DIR. My bad.

Any topic whatsoever can be started by anyone in a non DIR. If you want to start a thread on this in politics or anywhere else, there is nothing to stop you. I just figured it would be of more interest to Hindus than anyone else, because it was a Hindu temple.

I'm curious to what Hindus might think an appropriate reaction to be though. Personally, I just get saddened, and let the police do their work, if we even call them at all.

Yeah, it'd be funny if it wasn't so serious. This particular individual was a treasure trove of such comments ('How many states, I mean continents, are there in Africa?' - meaning to say countries).

That's a lovely image, Saivite temples in the Arabian desert...

"Get Out"...?

And go where? What type of logic is that? "Go home", they mean? Where else will Canadian citizens go?

Maybe they were nature lovers, and wanted the Hindus to stop spending so much time stuck inside the temple, and come out to breathe the fresh air :)

Canadians just love dominating the worship in Seattle. Either that or BC just annexed it.

Sorry, P, I just had to.

I do not claim Swastika exclusively for Hindus. Many cultures have used it in history, even Jews. It is a nice geometrical design like many others.

Well, was not Ka'aba a Shiva shrine according to some better-knowing hindu historians (currently, darlings of the ruling party at the Center)?

Explain how Hindu/Indian participation is helping (even if in a small way) the American/Canadian economy.

The vandalizing of any house of worship saddens me. It makes no sense. If this was a Christian church in Delhi, it would be those crazy Hindus attacking again. Here it gets reported (and probably accurately) as vandalism, although some reporting hints at hate.

Vandals leave Swastika, words of anger on Hindu temple | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO News
If I was the on the temple executive committee, I would have just recommended putting up a sign along it: 'Graffitti posters, if you have issues about our presence here, come inside and talk to us, so we can explain our house of worship'.
