Mackie writes that FGM is found "only in or adjacent to" Islamic groups.[101] There is no mention of it in the Quran. It is praised in several hadith (sayings attributed to Muhammad) as noble but not required, along with advice that the milder forms are kinder to women

I mean, isn't this proof enough to say NO!

Before addressing the question at hand, one must understand the difference between female genital mutilation (FGM), and female circumcision... both are atrocious acts often forced on women in several Islamic societies, but one is much more barbaric than the other.

Female circumcision is removal of a part of the clitoral head; supposedly if the clitoris is large and brings too much sensation to the woman.

See here: Circumcision for women is not obligatory - islamqa.info

FGM is not only the removal of the clitoral head, it is also accompanied by stitching almost the entire vaginally opening closed, leaving only enough for menstruation to take place. This is also done at a young age, and when these poor women have intercourse, it's brutal to say the least. This practice is NOT sanctioned in Islam, although one can see how easily dimented people can progress from one practice to another.

When I was a member of a Muslim women's forum, many of whom were in the UK, they would talk about seeing a doctor to have a small 'v' cut out of their labia, as a sort of symbolic act, in line with some hadith.

Why there is a need to mess with perfectly fine bits of anatomy is totally and utterly beyond me.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali in her book Infidel : my life describes the circumstances around having FGM done to her and her sister in Somalia, when they were ~6 years old, I think. She was older than her sister at the time. Her parents were progressive people, they did not want it done to them. Her father was arrested and her mother was trying to provide for them, and while she was away, her grandmother arranged for it to be done.

Reading her experience left me feeling hollow and outraged for months, and I couldn't finish the book.

She recounts that other girls who had it done would tease girls who hadn't by saying their bits would grow and dangle down to their knees.

A Sikh friend on another forum, who grew up in Africa, recounts one of her school friends begging her mother to let her have it done.

My money is on the practice being cultural, not Islamic, but it is a sheer shame it wasn't forbidden outright, and instead enshrined as OK in hadith, thus removing some of the impetus to fight against it.

And that women now have elective surgery to symbolise it? I can't fathom their mindset.

I hope this gets abolished. Its risky for health, its just complete waste. The whole cirumcission thing in general should be banned, luckily we have a law against FGM here, so no brainwashed person can do it and get away with it. I think its horrible to remove that part of the body, its afterall the most sensible organ that a woman has. And it doesn't even hold theologically.

What i hate is how muslims seem to be ok with it. Its pretty hard to demand respect with so low form of morality to cut of someone's body part away, i could name other things but that will take too long.

But if its tradition then why aren't muslims outraged by it then?. They should speak out against stuff like this not hiding just say, no its not like this. Beheadings for depections of the prophets... wow. Yeah they care soooooooooo much. Its like the worst sin ever :O I mean its worse than killing people or doing stuff in the name of God, that makes sense?

Btw "Taqqiya" is a famous thing to lie to an unbeliever. So i don't even know if i should trust you? I mean that seems pretty dishonest. What if it is religion and not culture. What then??? I believe it is, and is just trying to get higher morale ground, but without a morale code for human life in general.

How circumcision is to be performed is mentioned in the hadith narrated by Umm ‘Atiyah, may Allah be pleased with her, according to which a woman used to perform circumcisions in Madinah. The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon Him) told her: "Do not abuse (i.e. do not go to extremes in circumcising); that is better for the woman and more liked by her husband." (Reported by Abu Dawud in al-Sunan, Kitab al-Adab; he said this hadith is da‘if).

From that site ssainhu posted.

From this it would seem clear that FGM (using ssainhu's distinction between the terms) is not endorsed in Islam.

FGM is practiced because it controls the sexual desires of women, plain and simple. Whether Muslims or non-Muslims perform this barbaric act, the intention is the same. Women will never experience pleasure from sex if she has her clitoris removed or even somewhat "cut", and therefore will not "wander off" when she hits puberty to have sexual relations, especially before she is married, and after marriage, she won't be tempted to commit adultery.

It's a control thing, and a disgusting, cruel one at that.

Because they literally cannot stand the idea of a female receiving pleasure... yes... that's all there is to it. It's absolutely sickening.

I've been part of a movement that continues to rally against FGM in areas where it is a cultural norm. It's important to note that this is not a religious directive, but a cultural norm, yet indirectly supported by religious inclinations that believe control of female sexuality and purity laws are ethically correct.
