What are the best ways to tackle depression or anxiety?

I am curious because I often times go through cycles of depression and in usual cases anxiety. I have just learned to accept it but it seems like something that never goes away.

Hmmm...my opinion, not a cure all by any means.

Perceptions and experiences control our attitudes/morale/state of happiness and contentment. We can't always exercise optimal control and influence over our environment and the experiences within it - we can always work with, and to varying degree even master, our perception.

It's a daily exercise that builds on our past work/foundations.

When I'm upset I usually try to look at the bright side and be grateful. I am grateful that I can feel sadness, because if I can feel such deep sadness chances are I can feel immense happiness as well; just not at this moment. I like to think that it could be much worse, there are many that are worse off than I am so I should be happy and grateful that I was blessed with the life I live.

Not to mention I have expectations and responsibilities to live up to. Wallowing in sadness is not going to get me any closer to a degree, a job, and a loving family. My approach might be a little harsh but I just suck it up and work diligently. That's one thing I learned from living in Japan; hard work and diligence. Though I'm getting off topic now.

Another thing I like to do is walk out in nature. It's really hard for me to be sad sitting amid the beauty of nature, I just get overwhelmingly happy when I witness the beauties of nature and start smiling like an idiot. You should see me when I'm star gazing, my friends always give me weird looks because I grin so much I'm almost on the brink of laughter.

That's my opinion though, it won't work for everybody. Hope you find a way :)

If you experience periods of depression and/or anxiety more or less continuously for six months, I strongly recommend asking for advice from a professional. Having dealt with untreated mental health problems for several years I know how easy it is to tell yourself you're doing fine and don't need help, but in reality the struggle will tax on your resources. At worst you start thinking your coping mechanisms are normal and give up living life to its fullest without even realizing you do so. If you feel your mood affects your ability to deal with everyday life, do not let yourself be left alone with it. Talk to people who have the expertise to help you.

That said, there are things that improve your general well-being and reduces the impact of episodes of depression. Anxiety is harder to deal with, but since it's often coupled with depression, it might lessen as well. A healthy diet, regular exercise, a sound sleeping pattern and above all, a good social network, are really important both physically and emotionally. We're social animals and very reliant on feeling we're not alone. Similarly we need routines and a sense of accomplishment to feel good about ourselves. One big red flag is when you start losing interest in things you were passionate about before, or fail to feel happy about the positive things in your life. If your emotional landscape starts to seem flat or other people point it out to you, it's time to see a doctor.

Our sleeping habits not only affect our mental state, but also mirrors it. One symptom of depression is irregularity in sleep: sleeping too much, sleeping too little, insomnia or the like. Tiredness feeds both anxiety and depression, resulting easily in an harmful cycle that's best to stop as soon as you start noticing it. You need a sufficient intake of sunlight and vitamins to keep your body in balance, especially vitamin D.

There are mild herbal remedies out there that have a positive effect on your mood, most notably St. John's wort. You do still need to discuss using it with a doctor, due to its interaction with other medications or medical conditions. Here's some basic information on St. John's wort and the restrictions on its use.

I had a few periods where I used prescribed drugs but my doctors always suggest exercise.

True. It's unavoidable. Yet facing and recognising episodes directly for what it is helps lessen some of the of the sting until it dissipates.

If you don't think you're diagnosable, try some herbs. St. John's Wort and lemon balm tea supposedly help for depressive symptoms. For anxiety, Kava Kava and Valerian helps, as well as helps you sleep.

I don't think that any advice provided here can replace that of a professional. Neither depression nor anxiety are uncommon, but, only a professional can accurately diagnose and advise of treatment.

I've never really had severe depression because I've always had whatever I desired. However, if I did feel stressed, I would listen to mantras and meditate.

Thats good advice, yet it goes beyond creature comforts at times, I think. Robin Williams comes to mind in light that he's viewed as someone extremely successful.

Medicine and therapy is certianly useful and recommended but only up to a point.

It's really the person him/herself that ultimately unlocks their mental prison. Paradoxically the key is always there and its really a matter as to whether a person decides to unlock the door. I've had severe depression and anxiety most of my teen and young adult life and it's still there. Difference this time around entailed dealing with it directly, and not doing things artificially to avoid it or pretend theres an ultimate cure around somewhere including taking medicine with some exceptions. Some people will make it out, so to speak, and some people wont. Each episode is never the same.

Imc I finally, around 2006, got to a point to just run towards and directly face the attacks that arise which helped me notably in overcoming the effects it had on me.
I likely would have been institutionlized or perhaps dead years ago if I continued methods of avoidance by which through the act of "running away" or reliance outside your own capabilities, mental health may deteriorate even more as depression and anxiety takes it's toll when goals don't meet expectations.

Become a Christian, which simply means you like Jesus..:)
It won't make people completely immune, but it'll help them roll with the punches life throws at us.
And you don't have to go to church or get baptised or any of that razzmatazz if you don't want.

News article- "People who pray frequently are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, according to a study.."
More- BBC News | HEALTH | Praying 'aids mental health'

It's a POWER thing-
"After Jesus spent the night in prayer, everybody tried to touch him because POWER was coming from him"- Luke 6:12-19
Jesus said - "Someone touched me, I know that POWER has gone out from me." (Luke 8:46)
"And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed" (Mark 6:56)

And we too can "touch" Jesus by logging onto him to get a 'feelgood power download', just mumbling a few words now and again will get us connected, even if it's just "Jesus remember me", whenever we're feeling tired, lonely, fed up..
