Prayer is very Erotic

I feel very dirty saying this, I am sorry.

I feel that the act of prayer is very erotic and BDSM orientated.
When I hear people pray or read prayers in general they just sound like BDSM wordplay.
It is always "My lord", "your humble servant" or something like that. Muslims for example have a noticeable Master/Slave relationship with Allah. I feel as if the only way a person can honestly pray is if they find it to be arousing.

Here is an Islamic prayer I found online:
"O Allah, I am Your slave and the son of Your male slave and the son of your female slave . My forehead is in Your Hand (i.e. you have control over me) . Your Judgment upon me is assured and Your Decree concerning me is just ."

It is always slave this and slave that. So much submission and eroticism in it I smile when I read it.

On top of this is the body posturing during many prayers which is beyond naughty. To this very day I cannot look at prayer as a humble act, it just seems really dirty.

Thank Jesus you don't know anything about Gnosticism or you would think we are a bunch of perverts.

I actually do know some stuff about Gnosticism and the fact it creeped into some of the gospels. It explains some of the weirder parts of the Bible I may add.
Muslims and Vaishnites are just playing metaphysical BDSM as far as I am concerned.

Not saying anything is wrong with it. BDSM is very healthy mental wise.

God is like the greater dom a sub could ask for. An all powerful unavoidable master. SOOOOOOO erotic

Interesting thread. I found that when I started calling my guy "my lord" it did become rather distracting when encountering terms like that during prayer. I often though I shouldn't play that type of dom/sub game, because of the potential for it to corrupt my spiritual practice.

But then I lost my spiritual practice, so problem solved. LOL

Some Sufi prayers and poems would definitely fit the bill with very little stretching of the imagination needed. :D

My type of prayer is very different. We think of Gods as more similar to teachers, grandparents, guides, friends, etc. rather than Lord, Master, and such. They want our submissive worship as much as we would want it from our children and friends.

When you dont understand love, it remains as if it is all about sex.
When you dont understand humbleness, you as if are the lord to everything.
Love is very difficult thing to understand and practice in religious terms. Difficult in the sense it is closer to impossible. especially for us humans who have difficulty practicing it towards each other. By not directly putting it into scriptures, god spares all of us from dwelling in blasphemy up untill to our neck. We are saved from the burden of something only an exceptional few brave could handle. Imagine what it would be like to stop being the lord of everyhing or a single thing. Your senses, perceptions, your emotion, anything and everything that makes you, you, your world, your kids, your family, your freedom and giving up on all those, to the last drop of your tears. Those guys walked through hell while they were living on earth to get to that hidden. Love.

But god shows the way to it, humbleness, the method to Love. Those who sense it use that method and they at least show the willingness to the secret even if they succeed or not.

Anyways, I keep doing those prayers as long as I'm awake and the only good feeling I get is not, well, erotic :).

Ametist has a good point.

It is like kissing your little child on the cheek because you love and care for them. If you (as a man) do that to a random hot woman from public, you're probably gonna have some special feeling and some physical changes too if you are a virgin like me (oops).

Coming back to the BDSM or sex explanation. It is a wrong wiring to your spiritual roots. There is the wiring but the connections are wrong. Reaching to your Lover is the ultimate spiritual pleasure. You are sensing that. Which is good but you are taking it as if it is a physical thing. And you are thinking in BDSM there has to be a slave and a master and thats the pleasure giving activity. It isnt in spiritual sense. Pleasure in spiritual sense is noticing you are the master of your own slavery in each every sense and giving up that attitude. And does it hurt? Yes,my god, it does as hell. Because it isnt a sentimental thing as put in words here. It is almost against rules of physics and cosmos. We all hear about saint walking on water but we hardly hear how he got there. Because it is hidden to us to save us from the pain. So dont deceive yourself you are receiving any pain or pleasure in BDSM. It is just a bad copy cat activity of some spiritual heros.

Well you are not alone...ever heard of 'Saint Teresa of Avila'? ;)

Here's a taste from her writings...

"...Beside me on the left appeared an angel in bodily form . . . He was not tall but short, and very beautiful; and his face was so aflame that he appeared to be one of the highest ranks of angels, who seem to be all on fire . . . In his hands I saw a great golden spear, and at the iron tip there appeared to be a point of fire. This he plunged into my heart several times so that it penetrated my entrails. When he pulled it out I felt that he took them with it, and left me utterly consumed by the great love of God. The pain was so severe that it made me utter several moans. The sweetness caused by this intense pain is so extreme that one can not possibly wish it to cease, nor is one's soul content with anything but God. This is not a physical but a spiritual pain, though the body has some share in it -- even a considerable share..."

- St. Teresa of Avila (1515 – 1582), The Life of Teresa of Jesus

And this is the famous sculpture by Bernini of her 'rapture' in Rome...

Yes, the angel's arrow is phallic-shaped on purpose.

Consider her face closer up:

Jacques Lacan whilst discussing the female orgasm, said that "you only have to go and look at Bernini's statue in Rome to understand immediately that she's coming, there is no doubt about it." ("Encore," Sem. XX: 70-71)

One should never underestimate the ability of humans to somehow make everything about sex even though it isn't.

I know, with St. Teresa in point of fact she is describing a profound spiritual experience. Nonetheless, the symbolism of sexuality on her part was deliberate. She was using the image of human eros to capture the high point of her mystical immersion in the love of God. The pleasure of the orgasm was an image which she used to try and convey even just a hint of the spiritual delights she was experiencing. She is not alone is doing this either.

Although I must say, actually, this too:

"...One of the more surprising and disturbing phenomena that may occur during communion with the Lord is sexual disturbance or arousal. It is "surprising and disturbing" not because the phenomenon is in itself a cause for concern but because most people would never expect that in so holy an occupation there could be sexual repercussions. While they seem not to be so common, they do occur. Lorenzo, Saint Teresa if Avila's married brother who had chosen his sister as spiritual director, had experienced these disturbances, and he asked for her guidance. Her response was typical in its accuracy and decisiveness:

"I think the explanation of them must be that the soul's joy is so keen that it makes itself felt in the body...it will calm down if you take no notice of it. Several people have discussed this with me."

Since the human body is not a Cartesian soul dwelling within a body but a single body-soul composite, it is entirely normal than an intense spiritual experience may have bodily repercussions. Blushing from embarrassment and tears of joy or sorrow are other examples of this same basic reality, the profound oneness of the human person. Consequently, to experience sexual stirrings within a completely pure delight in God should be neither a surprise nor a source of worry..."

- Fr. Thomas Dubay, Fire Within

The above is actually a serious issue that some Christian contemplatives have encountered in their prayer life and worried about. Fr. Dubay's books is also an official Vatican approved tome with a serious analysis of contemplation.

Could have been first time agree with you..but :)
Anyway back to sex. Sex is physical pretendence, copying of a fragment of spritual pleasure. Not vice versa. You have sex because of spirituality, you have everything because of spirituality. Everything you have here has its roots there in spirituality, all wired into the physical, though some are wired correctly, some are not through you. Because you are the one representing that spirituality when looking at physical. You are responsible of the root'ş correct wiring if that interests you. Those with strong sex drives has an opportunity to understand the root better, those with strong envy has an opportunity to understand the root better, those with great anger (my way) has an opportunity to understand root better. Do you understand how Love is hidden in the scripture not to cause you any pain?

You are a virgin? But you seem nice and charming. Plus judging from your pictures you seem rather handsome. Like an Arabic version of James Lipton.
You really should come to America or get yourself one of the Muslim girls from Indonesia. You do not deserve to be a virgin.

I compare it to BDSM in a good way since it provides the same things. It has nothing to do with sex but the verbal eroticism of it all.
In BDSM there is a rarity in it, a moment where a human being willing wants to loose control and enslave themselves to someone they love.
The physical aspect of BDSM does not concern me in the slightest.

I didnt think you did compare in bad way. I thought you just compared. You can compare it to BDSM in a bad way, too. I wouldnt mind. I dont own BDSM, neither do i own the prayer, its intention or the correctly or incorrectly wiring to the spiritual roots of its utterer.
It is just an observation i have at first hand. Somebody may find them useful.

It is easier said than done for me. Marriage is a great and sacred responsibility and I fear I'd bring misfortune to my wife :(

But that's off-topic. I'll talk about it in the right place when the opportunity presents it self.

And thank you for your concern. You're too kind :)

You're not alone. Religion and BDSM do seem to have many parallels. Willingly becoming a slave, forfeiting your will for that of anthers, and desiring the pain that comes with sacrifice can make the two overlap in many areas.
There's even a Rammstein song about it, Bestrafe Mich (Punish Me).

Bestrafe mich (Punish Me)
bestrafe mich
Stroh wird Gold (Straw becomes gold)
und Gold wird Stein (And gold becomes stone)
deine Größe macht mich klein (your size makes me small)
du darfst mein Bestrafer sein (You may be my punisher)
Der Herrgott nimmt (The Lord takes)
der Herrgott gibt (The Lord gives)
Bestrafe mich
bestrafe mich
du meinst ja (you mean yes)
und ich denk nein (and I think no)
schließ mich ein in dein Gebet (Include me in your prayers)
bevor der Wind noch kälter weht (Before the wind blows even colder)
Deine Größe macht mich klein
du darfst mein Bestrafer sein
du darfst mein Bestrafer sein
Deine Größe macht mich klein
du darfst mein Bestrafer sein
deine Größe macht ihn klein (Your size makes him small)
du wirst meine Strafe sein (You will be my punishment)
Der Herrgott nimmt
der Herrgott gibt
doch gibt er nur dem (But he only gives)
den er auch liebt (To those he also loves)
bestrafe mich
