You know, that was exactly the logic that led us to leave the feminist forum purple, like all the other political DIRs. Since then, the sniping and moaning and kvetching about our "exclusivity" has been unrelenting, particularly from certain parties that insist their own personal political DIRs are reserved for others who simply want parrot their own exact opinions back to them.

Just saying, it might seem like it's not rocket science, but for some people, it's bound to be.

Sure, I'm talking about forum colours, and sharing my recent experience. I'm just saying, if people are sufficiently motivated to "engage" with you, what might seem like a simple, pragmatic administrative decision is likely to become an interminable troll-fest. So choose carefully!

If you don't know what MRA stands for you probably don't belong there? What about if the term is not used in your country, so you may never have come across it? I just searched the Guardian newspaper website (long established, left leaning British paper) and it has no links to the acronym as used in this thread.

I agree. Better if hearts are set on mra to spell it out. I hope spelling it out will encourage people to discover what it's about. :)

If it's going to be in the Political World area, right alongside Feminism, then it really makes sense for it to be labeled "Masculism" as many aren't going to know what MRA stands for. I know I wouldn't without having it told to me, as well as many others from different countries. They probably wouldn't bother with the DIR because they'd have no idea what it was about. now, having Masculism right next to Feminism though...I think that should be very clear what it is for. We would have 2 DIRs advocating for gender equality, one working from a female tact point and one working from a male tact point.

"MRA" will become quickly known though.
And "masculism" just looks too weird.
Real men (& real women) prefer acronyms anyway.

My expectations are low. After this thread I feel like the masculinism DIR is going to turn into a peanut gallery of commentary on the feminist DIR. I would really rather it be a Man Cave, and perhaps in "the Social World" or something. Masculinism as a political philosophy has almost no followers, and of that handful the majority seem to be reactionaries who are primarily focused on criticizing feminism.

Keep in mind, I didn't even vote until we were thirty pages into this thread and I got a good sense of what the advocates of an MRA DIR wanted to talk about.

Ha ha ha, we agree again and I looked like I was wrong when I first voted. :p

Masculism, not masculinism. Masculinism may not have much of a following (gratefully), but masculism is the what the MRA is all about and it does have a purpose. At this point, I think it's just a matter of which name is most preferred as they really mean the same thing, and it appears MRA is most preferred. Was just giving my input is all that some might not know what it stands for. Maybe "Men's Rights Advocacy DIR" could be another option to consider.

The way I see, people who want to talk about men's rights are perfectly free to do so right now. Nobody is stopping you. Make the threads! Strike up the band!

If it turns out that there are a lot of topics that people want to talk about regarding men's issues (rather than just a lot of talk about having a forum dedicated to men's issues ;)), then have a separate forum dedicated to it. Even more points, if like the religions or feminism, etc, it is shown that Men's Interests threads can't discuss the OP because they keep getting derailed by detractors.

A very sensible position.

I agree with this position as well.

I think those who are demanding a MRA's/Masculists forum will have to prove they can discuss things civilly - and without criticizing feminism - before any forum is granted them.

Why the higher standard for a Men's Rights area over the standard for the Feminist area?

To be honest, the staff's actions, threats, and overall attitude in this thread rings of sexism. I doubt we'll ever get an MRA subforum here. The more the staff posts, the more the attitude shines through. Rick summed up the forum's view on men's rights rather succintly.
