What makes you to stay away from wrong things like cheating, frauding, thieving etc.. ?

Several time blameless people are declared as blameworthy in this world without any reason. Thus.. what makes you to stay away from wrong things like cheating, frauding, thieving etc.. ? Is it God, if no, than why not ? if it is something else, than what is it ?

It is largely because I doubt there is any God that I value morals and ethics.

There is no overseer to bail us out of the consequences of our mistakes and our polluting of our own vital flow.

Learning. I did not learn to refrain from those wrong things. I think a child needs a person to learn from. Some children have no one so they might do those things. Then they learn that the result of doing wrong things is not worth it so they learn on their own to cease. Maybe the child decides he wants to be like other respected people. Sometimes respect never comes so the person goes back to doing those things.

Let me give you simple answers...

Because it feels wrong. No fancy words or philosophy, that's it!
I wouldn't want someone to do those things to me, so I don't do it to them.
I'm not a sociopath so I care about other people's feelings.

It is a simple thing to separate wrong acts and other people's feelings. A waitress does not claim all her tip money so that she might pay less tax. Is it stealing? Is it fraud? Whose feelings does it hurt?

Wow what an overreaction! :beach: Chill dude, I never said that.

OK I am chilling. You implied sociopaths do not care about other people's feelings. True. Why else would someone be good except that they care about what people think of them? And of course including their own self consciousness.

Empathy. Being able to feel what someone else feels. It's not so much about what someone thinks of you, heck that never came to my mind.

Basically that I understand that these things hurt my fellow man, my fellow soul in the greatness of the one. That I wouldn't like these things done to me.

I do not do unto others what I would not want done unto myself- Confucius

Empathy is simply being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes and feel what they must be feeling. You don't have to care. However, most people do care, because we are social animals.

I have always associated empathy with kindness. You make it sound like a skill that a person might have or not have.

If I want to know how a person is feeling it is because I care about him. Sometimes I want to know how a person is feeling because I care about myself. Either way I am caring about something.

That's the difference between empathy and sympathy. Empathy means you understand and feel, sympathy means you care.

I thought a person understands and feels for another person because he wants to. I have never imagined the FBI looks for people with empathy for working with the criminal mind. If empathy is just a skill people have, like math or music, it can be used for bad or good.

I would suspect being highly empathetic would be a valuable asset in a criminal profiler.

It's simply not in my nature to do those things. I'm usually having too much fun to be so inconsiderate of other human animals.
