Should Men be Feminists?

More seriously though, yes, men should be feminists in the sense that they should support civil equality. That's a no-brainer. "Feminism" shouldn't even be a word anymore at that point.

I'm cool with whatever as long as we put up a decent fight before finally handing over all the power to women. Assuming they don't have all the power already.

I assume this was a joke, but for those who might NOT know: feminism isn't about women taking the reigns of power, it's about having equal opportunity to do so alongside men!

Anyone who thinks women should have power over men, or might be otherwise described as "man-hating", cannot be called a feminist.

Well, yes, but to clarify, women *should* have power over men -- when they merit the position and earned it the same way any man would (by meeting the qualifications and being a better choice than the competition)!

In other words, I'm just splitting hairs to point out that women can be managers and bosses too, but not BECAUSE of their gender -- the point is that gender is a non-issue, and that anyone who MERITS the position can claim it!

Oh, absolutely. A woman who happens to have power over a person who happens to be a man is fine, as long as that gender difference has nothing to do with it.

To be fair, the term came to be to give power to women.

Some factions interpret it as equal poower, some others as more power.

The etymology obviously aint gender equal.

Correct.

But over the years, feminism has come to mean equality between men and women.

After all, in the old days, giving power to women was a time when women had no power to speak of (well, except over food, I guess.)

Yeah, those who ask for more power or "special" power (maternity issues notwithstanding, that's a different discussion) give the term "feminism" a bad name for sure.

Equality of opportunity is what matters

I think it was a pretty good talk.

"Leadership training" I couldnt agree more.

People may very well ignore or underestimate the importance of " "sensitivity" training" , but "leadership" training puts it really into perspective.

I also like the angle of the bystanders. We are all somewhat responsible for what we as a group, culture, etc, do.

I do assume some women are naturally atrxted to bad men though, we shouldnt ignore that part of the issue.

The idea is to tackle it from all the angles: victim, victimizer, society that holds them both and produces them both.

Great talk. Yeah, I think leadership training is a better name than sensitivity training under the circumstances.

As you might have guessed, I don't have any problem calling people out on comments or behavior that is not OK. We should all work on that skill, IMO.

Agreed. Though on my experience, this tends to alienate more the person calling them out than the person being called out.

Or well, its what happens to me. Then again, I am a social idiot, so it aint that hard that I do something alienating :D

That goes with the territory. The younger you are, the worse it is. Fortunately for me, integrity has always been more important than popularity. Who cares who else likes you if you don't like yourself?

I am not able to watch the video with my slow connection, but heck, yeah- men should be feminists. I think we all should have compassion for others, even if we don't belong to the particular group. And we should care about others having equal rights.

All people should be in favour of Equal Rights and Equality.
Some will argue that Feminism is just that, others will argue that Feminism is the opposite.

I just choose to distance myself from the label of "Feminist" or "Anti-Feminist" and just state that I support Equality and fair treatment for both Men and Women.
