I'm curious where these schools exist that actually teach kids the art of having sex (e.g. stimulation, orgasms). I don't recall ever watching porn in sex ed or remotely touching upon that subject at all.
Yes, these aspects are not within the remit of sex education (at least in the UK). In a science class, the focus is on the anatomical aspects and in PSE (personal and social education), the focus is on relationships. I'm not sure what boundaries would be pushed if teachers taught about masturbation.
Anyway, kids eventually tend to find out about that aspect of sex by themselves.

Instead we wasted our time labeling detailed anatomical diagrams of penises and vaginas.
I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. The lessons do focus on more than the immediately obvious sex organs. You'd be surprised at how many 12 year-old children don't actually know the location of the ovaries.

abstinence is the best prevention of teen pregnancy, sorry my birth control wins hands down as for it's prevention properties :D

Abstinence may be the best prevention method, but teaching ONLY abstinence is the worst possible method of prevention.

I guarantee you: if no american teenager knew anything about prevention except "dont have sex" , there would be a new baby boom of heights never before seen in america.

I don´t think sex ed class should teach any morality, I agree that´s up to the parent. The classes do should teach knowledge though. Morality is "should", knowledge is "this causes this (hows, whats, whys, )"

How whats and whys is exactly what they should be teaching in a sex ed class. an yeah, public school should have them. I assume there is a right to education in US ?

Again I am not opposed to an optional class focused on health risks and not encouraging the kids to explore their sexuality at a young age. I am strongly opposed to a manditory sex education and passing out birth control in schools. I would not be opposed to a health clinic on school grounds or in a district where teens can go seek out testing and parent approved bc. But I would wish that all these programs available would push first abstinence, and parental consent be required for any measures that do not revolve around abstinence.

Teens wont go if it is not mandatory. You are expecting them to have no shame in the very age that has all to do about shame.

"What you doing in that class four eyes? You think you have a chance with a girl?" "Ha! look at him! he doesn´t know ****!" "What a ****, what is she doing in that class? Just how much sex does she plan to have?"

Terrible, terrible idea. Mind you, those phrases need not even be real, they could very well just exist on the mind of the teen that DIDNT go to the classes and then made a random girl pregnant because he never thought he would have a chance anyways, and when he did, he just thought "it wouldn´t happen to him" and he couldnt screw it up now that life finally smiled at him.

The class needs to be mandatory. They will all have sex. (if you have a % of who wont, we would still see thats a lot less than those NOT in class) so better that they know what they are doing. If they have a religion that tells them NOT to do it, then they just dont.

Honestly, if you think that a person who wants to practice abstinence because of religion is strong enough to manage that, but not strong enough to manage to do that suddenly when there is a sex ed class in school, I think you are deluding yourself about teen sex drive. Maybe yours was mild, I don´t know. But if it was, you were the exception :p

My assertion was not to teach only abstinence but that it be the main prevention method taught. As I have said, I worked many years in a women's crisis center and of course we taught risks and prevention, but anytime we had a teenager come to us we encouraged them to abstain until their minds and hearts were ready for all that sex entails.I just don't see why everyone thinks that because a method isn't always effective that we give in on our principles and give these kids new boundaries based on their rebellion. I don't think I am allowed to put a religious twist in this but let me just put this in an analogy of God's laws for us. Because we can't keep his laws did he change them for us? No he did not, he still expects us to abide by his laws even though he knows we will fail. Rules are given us as a protection and a guidance, the old rule of waiting till marriage for sex is not extreme people! Why must we change it to, wait till your married, but if u can't and your feeling the burn, well here is some bcp or even the more liberal view, waiting is foolish, UN natural, why burn?, here's some bcp go for it! I just don't feel we should all be compromising because children will rebel anyway. If they rebel and become sexually active, I of course would not disown them, but I would encourage them to keep on trying.:)

Yes my sexual urges as a teen were mild and I did wait until marriage as most of my peers did also, we were taught at home to abstain and that sex was a precious gift and virginity was important and to be protected. Sure there were people having sex, but they were not given the go-ahead by the schools to do so. Teen pregnancy was rare as well as std's, promiscuous girls were ashamed and didn't brag about hook-ups. That system worked rater well as history shows so how is it that you see our compromises in the last 25-30 years haven't effected the statistics? Are teenagers bodies and hormones any different than they were 30 or more years ago? No, we as a people have compromised, adapted into a new age acceptance and so we allow things our fathers and grandfathers would never think of. You know what scares me the most is that I am alone here defending these values of old.:(

Sorry, I can't agree with the push abstinence first. I believe it is unhealthy and counter productive. This is something that you and I can never agree on so why do you think the government should take your view over mine? I base mine on science and human psychology, what do you base your view on?

Well, understand that we seriously had to study and memorize diagrams that you would be giving in an advanced anatomy course. I'm talking a ridiculous level of detail and memorization. It's beyond my comprehension why we did that for sex organs but never did anything that extensive for anything else of human anatomy (not even in AP biology in high school). Honestly, I think they did it because they didn't know what else to do with us. It was, for the most part, a completely frivolous waste of time and didn't belong in a sex ed class. It belonged in a college-level human anatomy class, if not exclusively pre-med.

That's exactly what the old guys who wanted to sell their daughters to the highest bidder said when the practice became obsolete.
Oh C'mon, cheap shot and irrational, I am talking about moral values that never harmed anyone and were and should be used as a protection for our children.Be honest with yourselves, you would not prefer your children wait till they are adults and enter into a committed relationship before they have sex?

Exactly my point ! I don't think the government should take any side ! It is true you and I will never agree, so why is your way being excepted and or proposed and mine is not? It goes both ways, so leave govt./schools out of our moral values completely and we have a deal.:)

...promiscuous girls were ashamed and didn't brag about hook-ups.
What about the promiscuous boys?

Are teenagers bodies and hormones any different than they were 30 or more years ago?
Their minds are, most definitely. They are being bombarded by a media far, far more sexually charged than it was 30 years ago.

That is very true and a leading contributor in promiscuity in both adults and children, so then we must compromise because the media has and if we do not we are unfair, unevolved and hate mongers who have no empathy for what our kids have to deal with being subjected to constant arousal in the media....I Feel pretty hopeless now, thanks...

What is wrong with correctly managed promiscuity?

Is that why states that stress "abstinence only" education rank highest in teenage pregnancies? Keeping people ignorant is the cause of problems, not the solution.

Now now guys, don't attack without seeing how I carefully worded the phrase please.I said my birth control method wins hands down for its prevention properties, meaning if both methods were used, mine would win. I did not say my method wins hands down if not used. I worded it purposely so you could not attack :D
failure.....

Of course they were ashamed they were demonized u_u

The values of old were terrible, and they include stonning a woman that is not virgin by marriage. Do notice that peole never looked bad at men that had sex. Yes, some institutions said it was bad, but they were mostly looking good for it, while girls were demonized and attacked.

Oh with that I have no problem. It is factual: abstinence is the best brith control. No prob at all.

As long as you teach all other subjects thoroughly too. so most of the kids that will not listen to the optimal method are still safe.

Let's not forget we are discussing children here and not consentual adult situations. My personal beliefs aside adults have a hard enough time dealing with sexuality and emotions outside of committed relationships. How then do we expect our kids to handle it ? Some have said abstinence is unhealthy, how exactly? Sex is more then risks and protection of risks, it is emotional, hormonal, mental and physical. Teenagers have yet to prove it functional, and healthy and free of emotional pain and mental anguish. If they just wait until their minds become developed enough to view both the pros and cons of a sexual liaison, perhaps there will not be as much teen suicide, murder, abandoned babies in garbage cans etc..I don't see passing out condoms and tesing them on bananas is helping the real emotional issues with our kids, but I see good council, responsible parents and encouragement in abstinence could go further.
