Free Education from Political Control

The Uk Education system is on the verge of beoming medieval under our new Coalition Government.

The Secretary for Education - Michael Gove, a man with no teaching experience whatsoever, believes that if it worked for him - it should work for eveybody. All teachers know - he could not be more wrong.

Politics, my dear. The winning party leader gets to appoint whoever he wants to be the "Minister" of whatever in Canadian and UK politics. Canada has a creationist chiropractor for a Science Minister.

because he went to Eton. ...( not actually he got a scolarship from a state school to a private scottish school. then got a 2-1 in english at oxford. Joind the Conservative party while there.
Ministers rarely know anything about their departments beforhand..

This one is plain unpleasant and self opinionated.

Geesh. I can't stand this situation. I don't necessarily think he's a "scumbag", but he is utterly and completely unqualified to be this country's Minister of Science and Technology. He's the OPPOSITE of qualified. He's the LAST PERSON ON EARTH I would choose to be the Minister of Science. He has ANTIPATHY to science. I can only conclude that his shameful ignorance in the field is representative of the entire Conservative party, and he's actually the best they've got.

Bloody good question!

In UK Secretaries of state are chosen from the PM cabinate of politicians. Its like they pull jobs out of a hat.

The ex Chancellor of the Exchequor - Gordon Brown, the man responsilbe for the UK's recession. did not have any qualification in economics whatsoever, neither does George Osborne the current head of our economy- they both have History degrees.

Personally I believe the secretaries of state should be elected from groups of people who hold high levels of experience in that area - eg Education - and Ex HeadMaster , Miltary - an ex General etc etc.

Try any of the above with a caffiene fuelled teenager who wants to get back to his X-box - it won't work.

He wants to make everything harder - he want's to prevent teachers teaching to the test by banning access to past papers, he want to abolish vocational qualification equivalence, remove GCSE's replacing them with the EBACC

its just a mess.

politicains do't realise that evrytime they come up with a fancy new Idea its take months of teachers to rewirte all their lesson plans and the kids suffer casue we're still trying to get our heads round the changes.

Leave us alone!!! Let us do our jobs ffs

I live in a place where creationism is a science and evolution just one of many questionable theories. I know science (high school) teachers who swear that the moon landing was faked and is nothing more than a government conspiracy, that global warming was invented by the democratic party to divert the public from their scandalous behavior, and where a law was passed that effectively goes against the constitutional separation of church and state by pretending that the bible will be taught as literature and history.

For example, an Arizona bill that creates a high school course for public and charter school students that teaches the Bible and its role in Western culture is now law.

"Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed legislation Tuesday that requires the state Board of Education to design a high school elective course titled “The Bible and its influence on Western Culture" which would include lessons on the history, literature and influence of the Old and New testaments on laws, government and culture, among other aspects of society."

This is an excerpt from a Huffington Post article from 4-19-2012; the law was passed with a vote of 21-9, and approved by the House in February

Yes, that is the sad state of affairs in the US, where Young and Flat Earth, creationism, and intelligent design are considered sciences that ought to be taught in school. Given the way budgets are being slashed and many worthwhile programs fall away (art, music, sports and general elective classes that enrich the curriculum), we now have to decide what else we can do away with to make room for bible study.

Personally, I think that those who want to cram religion down the throats of their own children should do so. But not in a public school system that is barely able to teach children enough of the basics to help them function in the modern world. Or is it really beneficial to sacrifice math, language, social studies, or science on the altar of religious manipulation and coercion?

Isn't the education system already under political/government control?

If education were freed from government control what would it develop into? Without some central authority would there be any standard curriculum? Would anyone know what competencies a particular degree certified? Wouldn't the education system split into hundreds of local variations, each teaching a different curriculum?
