I Am A Christian!

Me Myself

I am a Christian:
Am I supposed to hate certain people?
Am I supposed to agree with slavery?
Am I supposed to believe the earth is flat and only 6,000 years old?
Am I supposed to judge people and tell them they are going to "hell"?
Am I supposed to throw stones at other faiths and such?

And since I do none of those things, does that mean I am a bad Christian?
According to a LOT of Christians, yes it would mean such. (except for the hate, they would never say they teach to hate people, but just sins. Also for the slavery, but that is problematic for literalists although they dont want to admit it. And flat Earth.)

Now if you were catholic you wouldn't have problems with almost any of those (to say an example)

Most other denominations, yes, you would need to believe all you put above. Specially for any evangelist kind or any that exalt the bible as something that most be read literally.

As for hell, while you don't need to say you know who is going where, MOST christian interpretations at least believe that there are going to be people there, and all that I know believe that the demons will be there suffering for ever too.

No you are what some people would consider Jesus-like in the sense that you don't blindly adhere to a religion and agree with sheeple who call themselves Christian by adhering to the following list. ;)

It makes you a good Christian, not a bad one. There are of course people who will disagree, but they are not in a position to tell you what you should and should not believe. Only you are.

EDIT:

If being a good Christian would mean that you have to hate and judge, to enslave and throw away science, is it not better to be a bad one? "Good" and "bad" are in the eye of the beholder. Its more important that you consider yourself a good Christian then to try and please others who claim you are a bad one.

According to anti-theists, it makes you an inconvenience best left ignored.
This. :D

You're an amazing Christian. :)

Contrary to the wants and desires of a few anti-religious bigots (and yes, they're bigots in my eyes), religion =/= Christian fundamentalism, Christianity =/= literalism. Such people only want Christians, or religions in general, to fall into this way because they can feel good about saying ignorant and nasty things.

Nope, you're not a bad Christian. You know who's bad? Those people who believe or tell you that you are "bad" if you disagree with those things that you mentioned above

Neither Jesus nor God called any one a Christian.

A Christian is one who follows Christ's teachings.
A Christian is Self Denominated.

whatever makes you feel better
Why should it make me feel better? I have read numerous blog posts and articles from leaders in the "skeptic" movement talking about how religion should always be challenged if for no other reason than all religion is simply wrong. They make no qualifiers to direct their wrath towards extremists or anything similar. To them, if you are religious, you are wrong and should be converted/confronted head on.

do you honestly think that if dogmatic religions weren't in the position to control the lives of people who were/are not adherents, there would be a reason to argue?

No. But then again, I was not talking about what I considered a reason to argue...

I am sure you call yourself one. My definition is someone who has received Jesus as Lord and Savior.

No. Love your neighbor. Hate sin.

Jesus appears to promote a service mentality ie not that others should serve us but that we should serve others.

Only if you misinterpret the Bible.

God is the only judge and is fully capable of doing that through us.I tend to think that He keeps the info on who is going to Hell close to the vest.

A Christian should stand for the truth of God.

If you know Jesus then you know whether you are bad or good.

one wonders why you would insert your definition of a christian...are you comparing yourself?

if you hate sin, how can you not judge?

if christians are here to serve, then why are they voting against the inalienable rights of others?

if god is the only judge then what are you doing?

no one needs to know jesus to know they are bad or good

how can a christian stand for the truth of god, and misinterprets the bible?

Matthew 7:4
How can you say, “My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you don’t see the log in your own eye?

Luke 6:37
[ Judging Others ] Jesus said: Don’t judge others, and God won’t judge you. Don’t be hard on others, and God won’t be hard on you. Forgive others, and God will forgive you.

Matthew 12:33
[ A Tree and Its Fruit ] A good tree produces only good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. You can tell what a tree is like by the fruit it produces.

The Messiah (Yeshua or Jesus) taught that we should always give poeple the benefit of the doubt.
We should never judge others no matter what (Race, Religion, etc.) they are.
Remember that when you point the (index) finger at someone else you'll have three others pointing back (try it out). Everyone has some sort of pride and no one likes to be judged or treated unfairly.
However, we can determine by a persons ways and actions, how we want to deal with that person keeping in mind that patience is a virtue and everyone deserves common courtesy and respect. All of us are Human and poop in a toilet (even if its a golden toilet). There is only ONE who is perfect and even He is the most humble and merciful.

It is really only partially a rhetorical question (it was mostly rhetorical, but I don't think it was silly). I keep seeing questions about Christians stating verses in the Bible talking about slavery or stoning, and that sort of things, or talking about the crusades, etc. as if Christians are supposed to act this way- I certainly know that they are not saying that Christians are supposed to act that way or even that they do now-- but it can be misconstrued (not by me, after all, I try and understand human nature, LOL).

And about the Law: Can a person in this day and age even be able to keep every law listed in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy? Is there anyone that does? (that's a rhetorical question, too).

The law was given to show man's sin,and reliance on him, Christ gave us freedom from the law! You do not need to be a scientist and know the earths dimentions to be a Christian, you certainly were not given the power to damn anyone to hell, slavery and stoning were not Christ's teachings at all, You are not a Christian for what you do or do not believe, it is for who you believe in. Christians get a bad rap for how people have mis-used Christian doctrines and created their own Christ.it is the same for many religions, keep hold to your love for God's word and you just cannot go wrong.:)

Gods word? wasnt it that women are not allowed to take any leading role on teaching the faith? Why are you contradicting the alleged literal reality of the bible as a God´s book by doing so?

I don't know if you are a good or a bad Christian. I am neither, but even I know Jesus never taught these things, so surely you know it. By raising these points in what strikes me as an indignant tone, could it be that you are passing a little judgement yourself?
