Some questions

I have had a passive interest in Islam since reading about the Ottoman Empire and I read parts of the Quran shortly after 9/11 to dissolve incorrect rumors going around at the time. I have never taken a serious study of it though and I am looking at correcting it.

Is Homosexuality really worth of a death penalty or removal as a Muslim?

Do Muslims not date?

Also how does one eat Halal especially in areas where there is little to no such foods available?

Also I have been looking on getting my hands on a physical copy of the Quran to study since I find it easier to study books I can hold. Yet being heavily constrained by finances can't at this point afford to really spend anything. Does anyone know if this site: allahsquran.com/free/is legit? Thanks for any help you can give it is much appreciated.

Hi Dingbat, welcome to RF and the Islamic DIR.

Regarding your questions, below are some links that I hope will have the answers, if they don't provide a sufficient answer then let me know.

Islam's Position on Homosexuality - Contemporary Issues - Shari`ah - OnIslam.net

Muslims do not date. It is prohibited in Islam for a man and woman who are allowed to be married to be alone with one another or touch one another while they are unmarried.

Islam prohibits men and women from mingling.

By halal food are you specifically meaning meat or everything?

Yeah websites like that are legit, that's the one I usually recommend.

Order from them and if you do not receive one then let me know, I will send you an English copy if you'd be willing to give me your details in a Private Message.

Thank you for the reply and the information. So how does courtship work if say I meet someone at University where she is not with any parents around?

By Islam prohibits Men and Women from mingling you mean outside of the family I assume?

I did mean meat specifically sorry for not clarifying. I just know that in the certain areas that Halal meat is hard if not at times impossible to find. Except for Thanksgiving where I have run into Halal Turkeys before.

Excellent on the website I have asked for one and if I don't get a response I would be more than willing to give you my information in private so you could send me a copy.

Thank you so much you have been more than helpful and thanks for putting up with my questions. I find it hard to find a place to clear up the misunderstandings of Islam from the propaganda put out there.

This link explains how it works, if you have any questions or don't understand something let me know:
Islam's Stance on Love and Marriage - Love & Sex - counsels - OnIslam.net

By Islam prohibits Men and Women from mingling you mean outside of the family I assume?

Any female that you are allowed to marry, you are not allowed to be alone with her nor touch her in any way. However, if the female's parents and/or brother and uncles are present then you may talk with her (in cases of seeking marriage) and get to know each other a little, but it must be done in the presence of other people.

I did mean meat specifically sorry for not clarifying. I just know that in the certain areas that Halal meat is hard if not at times impossible to find. Except for Thanksgiving where I have run into Halal Turkeys before.

Scholars agree that a Muslim is allowed to eat the meat of an animal which has been slaughtered in the name of God by Jews and Christians (people of the book). If you can't find any butcher who sells Halal meat, then that of Jews would be fine if you can find any since they tend to be more strict than Christians when it comes to slaughter and closer to Islamic teachings

Not a problem.

You are most welcome, I'm glad I was helpful. Feel free to ask any question that you might have.

Thank you once again for the clarification it is quite helpful. Another question I have heard Muslims are forbidden from dancing, music, and the like. That seems rather odd and I don't think it is true but I have heard it from a few different people so I figured I would ask here.

I do want to thank you again eselam you have been quite helpful.

Dancing in Islam:

Wa `alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we would like to thank you for showing keenness on learning the teachings of Islam, and we appreciate the great confidence you have in us. We hope our efforts meet your expectations.

Islam is a religion of moderation and does not approve of either extremism or negligence. It does not prevent people from having entertainment; however, it provides the rules that regulate this entertainment. At the same time, Islam does not tolerate any kind of entertainment that contains haram (unlawful) or even leads to haram behavior.

Dancing can be either between women, between men, or mixed between both sexes. It is allowed for women to dance together unless it involves revealing any of the woman’s `awrah – that is, the parts of the body between the navel and the knee – in front of other women. It is also allowed unless the dancing means that mandatory obligations will not be carried out or if it coincides with unlawful acts.

In this regard, Dr. Su’ad Salih, professor of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) at Al-Azhar University , states:
Islam is a religion of moderation; it does not prevent singing and dancing, but it forbids anything that stimulates people’s desires, whether it be among men or women. Women are supposed to observe good manners if they dance in front of other women. They should not exceed the limits by doing anything that stimulates desires and incites evil. There are many cases where women are tempted by other women.
However, if a woman dances in front of her husband, then there is no restriction, as it is a way of cementing relations between spouses – and this a key pillar of establishing the Muslim family.
Moreover, Dr. Salim Ahmad Salamah, Dean of the Faculty of Usul Ad-Deen at the Islamic University, Gaza , adds:
It is permissible for women to dance and sing as long as there are no males around. In addition, the words of the song should be free from any foul words or vulgarity. Thus, as long as the words of the song are pure and clean and there are no males, there is nothing wrong in dancing.
By analogy, men are allowed to dance together as long as they cover their `awrah (the parts of the body between the navel and the knee) and there is no fear of temptation.
Men and women dancing together is absolutely haram in all cases, except when a wife dances in front of her husband. The reason behind this prohibition is that with mixed dancing bodily contact is close and improper sexual desires are aroused. This has been strictly forbidden by Islam in an attempt to block the way against evil. If men and women were permitted to dance together, a lot of haram acts could occur. That is why mixed dancing is not allowed.

Dancing: What Is Allowed and What Is Not - Singing & Music - counsels - OnIslam.net

Music in Islam:

Music is forbidden in Islam. All musical instruments are unlawful and thus so is the music that they make. The only 2 instruments that are permissible are a single drum and a duff. However, even they are used for specific purposes and situations.

Singing in Islam:

Singing is permissible so long as the words which you say are in line with Islamic teachings. For example, you may not attack the honor of another person by means of singing, you may not speak ill of the death through singing, you may not sing a song which promotes adultery or drinking illicit substances etc.

If you prefer links for the latter two then I can post links.

Not all Muslim's are of the view that Music in all is Haram. Content of the Music is what matters. I believe instruments are fine. Still waiting for any Muslim of a different view to show me why every instrument except two are forbidden.

Dancing is simply forbidden as it promotes promiscuity.

Yeah I understand the majority of the morality rules but I do have a hard time with a few of the other rules. Not major problems I guess with the overall rules of Islam but a few leave me scratching my head like the music one.

I just happened to watch the film "The Message" and it was quite inspiring and excellent. It showed parts of the Prophet's life and the early history of Islam that I was completely ignorant of.

I plan too once I get up to SLC to finish my Undergrad work next year but till then I am on my own.

Starting by yourself is a real challenge, but if you are bussy, then give it a try.

First thing i recommend before praying is to memorize surah Al-fatiha ,also to
hear the verses by sound check here and to check for it's meaning by "show Trans",
if you finish with it,then let me know :)

This following program is very helpful, it goes through the whole obligatory prayers and each unit within.

Falja e namazit për fillestarë

If it comes up in a non-English language then you can change the language on the top right corner of the animation.

Not so much questions as much as a general update. I am beginning a proper solo study of Islam and so far it has been even for the short period of time fruitful and eyeopening. I watched Inside Mecca by National Geographic and it was an amazing short docu about the Hajj. It was a kind of dedication I have not seen before. I have also found it fascinating that the slanders against Islam and the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) have not changed much since Enlightenment era monks and bishops came up for reasons to hate Islam. The Prophet being a pederast, Allah is a Moon God, etc. all find their roots from Catholic Authorities trying to stir up hate which is amusing to see it once again dusted off. I also enjoyed this interview with Imam Zaid Shakir:

I do have to thank God though for finding this forum and for sending some people my way. I never expected quick answers but then again I should never underestimate God. Anyways I am going to get back to studying.:D

Thank you for your updates and that nice video and i like his description for some people whom trying to clouding and disturbing Islam by his saying " in terms of manifesting Islam and letting people see its beauty in this society. At a time when a lot of people are muddying it up. So we have this beautiful stream and its crystal clear water and we're looking at and we're enthralled. And then someone runs over with a stick and stirs up all the mud on the bottom says look at it and it's like Ugh! Gives you the creeps. I wouldn't drink that if you paid me! And so when people come with sticks and they're muddying it up, you have to do a lot of work to clear it out. "

Hello again,

I have been reading the Qur'an and I do have some questions that hopefully someone can answer or guide me to the right place to find the answer. When it says in the Qur'an to, "Fear Allah" what exactly does it mean? Surely it can't mean actual fear like a woman who fears of an abusive husband who has returned home or the like.

I also have a question about what kinds of people make it to Jannah. Is it only Muslims or does it include people of various faiths? The reason I ask as I find either I am misunderstanding or just do not have the correct historical context. It talks about the Poor being one of the first groups to enter Jannah so I would assume that includes non-Muslims. Yet at times the Qur'an can be heavy handed towards Christians and Jews. I don't know if this is specific towards ones who attack Islam, profess a faith in God but are lying, or an indictment of the religions as a whole. I would assume the first but I just want to be sure.
