Egypt's "Farewell Intercourse" Law

A friend of mine just posted THIS LINK on Facebook stating a law that is trying to be passed in Egypt that will allow husbands (or wives) to have sex with their dead spouse up to six hours after death.

I find it HIGHLY suspect and incredibly unbelievable, so I figured I'd post it here to hear from our members who live in Egypt. I hate anti-any religious propaganda and would very much like to inform my idiotic, gullible Facebook friends who'll believe anything they read without bothering to research it, that this is in fact, a total falsehood.

Has anyone heard about this?

I haven't heard about such a thing, only the proposal to lower the legal age of marriage (which is disputed, too, as the parliament chose before to enact a law forbidding marriage for anyone under 18 years of age).

Based on this, and the fact that such a law would have most definitely resulted in absolute riot, I think it is safe to say that this 'news' was intended as anti-religious and anti-Arab/anti-Egyptian propaganda.

It does seem to be making it's rounds, but yes, it probably is false.

For the record, the CSMonitor article cites the Al-Ahram Weekly which is "state owned", as the source of the article and the writer being a staunch supporter of Mubarek. Likewise, Al-Arabia is largely Saudi owned, but based in the UAE.

Exit question: Why would a Mubarek supporter, a government run news service and the Saudi's news service wish to discredit the lawfully elected members of the Egyptian parliament? In effect, the government is airing a piece about what members of the government are supposedly looking into. One obvious answer is that the military isn't so keen on the newly elected representatives and wishes to discredit them and thereby retain power. Then again, if the Salafi's are involved in this alleged "review" almost anything IS possible.

Update: Several Egyptian sources are claiming via Twitter that the story below is false. It has been suggested by some that a rumour may have been placed by sources loyal to former dictator Hosni Mubarak. More to follow.

I've never understood what the big deal is about having sex with a recently dead body, particularly if that body had been your wife's. It's not as though the person is being violated per se, being dead. Does anyone believe that a portion of the person's spirit is still inside the dead body but unable to communicate acceptance or refusal which would make the act rape? Not that I'm aware of.

Such an act would seem to me somewhat akin to how relatives tend to eat a huge meal after a funeral in Western Christian churches. It's an affirmation of life, and in this case would represent a farewell to a very personal aspect of the couple's relationship.

I suspect that some of the taboo associated with necrophilia relates to religious beliefs that the body is the sacred temple of the spirit or something along those lines and thus must be handled respectfully once the person is gone. Otherwise, I really don't see what the big deal is as long as no one's going around having sex with bodies indiscriminately.

Some religions, of which Islam might be one, say a person becomes impure by coming in contact with a corpse. And you know how Muslims are with washing themselves and ritual purity and all that.

I knew it to be obviously false, but considering there are many people in the world who take things at face value and run with them without doing research, I wanted to find a source stating it was false to share with my friends on Facebook, so they wouldn't be among the idiot masses who choose to believe all they read.

I'm not offended, it has nothing to do with me. And I probably didn't understand your query of why you are seeking a rebuttal source, but if your friends have sunk to such a low level for real, then they are a lost cause.
