Inground Pools

So the parental unit are thinking about putting in an inground pool this year, but are totally beside themselves with all the shapes, liners, rock colors, flowers, pool-scaping etc ideas they have to choose from, and are having a hard time deciding.

I figured I'd post here to see if any of you have an inground pool, and to receive pics and maybe some insight on what should and shouldn't be done.

Any thoughts? :)

I've got an inground pool. Sorry, no pics. Mine's an oval. (Sorry, don't remember the length/width measurements) 3.5 ft deep shallow end, 9 ft deep deep end, and the drop from shallow to deep is very steep. It can be fun to slide down underwater, and it makes using the diving board better/safer because there's no incline in your way when you dive. There's a ladder in the deep end and in the shallow end... ladders that are removable. They attach to poles that are permanently affixed in the ground.

Fence is a must, especially to prevent animals from falling into your pool, and/or destroying the pool cover in the winter.

Trees in the yard are important to consider. First of all, leaf removal will probably be a constant chore, unless you've got a really big yard and no trees anywhere near the pool. And if you do have trees near the pool, consider the shade that might prevent the sun from warming the pool. Unless you get a heated pool, even the hottest days can still leave you with almost intolerably cold water if there's too much shade.

I hope that's helpful.

Incredibly helpful, thanks!

The parentals have quite a large backyard. The mominator and I measured the place where she'd like to put the pool, and surrounding deck/rock/brick/lounge-y area type thing, which encompasses about 1/3 of her whole backyard, and it was 53 feet long by about 37 feet wide. It's bordered by a wooden fence on three sides already, and she'd add a fourth side going across. She has 5 cats and two dogs, so she's very intense about making sure everything is safe for her, and neighbourhood animals, though we don't get many in the backyard, as one of her dogs is 300lbs. The neighbourhood cats have learned to steer clear, haha.

There are cedar bushes on one side of the fence, but they belong to the neighbours, so there's not much she can do. Other than that, there's one smallish tree in that area that mom plans to uproot and replant elsewhere. That area of her backyard is quite shady already, so I believe she's planning on getting a heated pool.

The thing she's getting confused about is different stores are telling her different things with regards to steel [bases?...I'm not sure where the steel comes in, they just keep mentioning it] or plastic/resin. Each store is saying the other is better. Do you have any opinion on that subject?

I do appreciate all the help! :)

Depending on where trees are in relation to your pool, especially tall trees, you might need to look out for racoons, skunks, squirrels, birds, etc.

And yes, upon opening the pool one summer, I found a dog that had apparently been in there for some time.

Just sayin... as intense as your mom is, these are things to be aware of.

Don't know about that sort of thing.

No problem.

BTW... whatever deck/rock/brick/lounge type of thing you decide to go with... try to avoid what might easily become a breeding ground for ant colonies. Our patio is comprised of cinder blocks.... ant-hills and weeds are a constant issue.
