Will Scientists be our future gods?

We used to rely on witch doctors by no choice except they had the secret knowledge. As we stand on the shoulders of the greats we become more knowledgeable of existence in itself. We are doing things now that would not have been tolerated 50 years ago. Now Scientists are doing god like things. If we don't kill ourselves first Scientists will end up being gods.

Perhaps said deity could pick a few of his favourite brown nosers, save them, and wipe out the rest of the planet.

then cover all his tracks so that there is absolutely no evidence of his wiping out the whole planet and start over with his favourite brown nosers.

Just a thought.

Hopefully Scientists will be able to predict any of Gods moves and circumvent impending doom. The brown nosers will be put in white rooms.

I doubt scientists will be considered gods (unless we regress into a psuedo dark age where the majority of people are oblivious to basic scientific knowledge [sort of like the american education system] where those who understand and can use scientific knowledge in practical applications may be seen as some sort of mystical beings) however scientific laws and highly accepted theories might reach a stage of such 'worship' as to replace the place of god in society as an ideal, scientists on the other hands might then be considered prophets (for those who obtain radical new insight into the various domains of science), high level clerics such as bishops (for those who continue to develop our understanding of existing domains of science in a more incremental fashion) and the rank and file clergy (those who focus on practical implementations of science, lab workers etc); I do not mind such a future, though I doubt it will be achieved any time soon (in the next couple hundred years)

i was never after the power only the knowledge.
and even if so technology would sell out to make a buck and even the playing field

One thing that kind of concerns me is that in ancient myths, the gods are always trying to keep human beings from gaining too much knowledge and power. In Greek myths you have Prometheus teaching humans forbidden divine knowledge and being punished for it, and in the Garden of Eden you have the serpent being punished for the same thing. Makes me wonder if the writers of those myths were making a statement about fundamental human nature. Can mere mortals be trusted with godlike power without godlike wisdom and self control?

Science is building a modern tower of Babel and it'll be this century that decides whether we're destined to ascend to the heavens and become gods, or whether the tower falls back upon us and scatters our civilization. I'm optimistic it'll turn out better than the story in the Bible. Zeus and the Olympians overthrew Cronus and the Titans...its only fitting that mankind should overthrow Zeus. ;)

To me in each case they seem to be suggesting that those with knowledge and power prefer to keep that knowledge and power from others, to keep them ignorant and easily controlled.

Witch doctors were physicians and religious practitioners, were they not? How are you connecting them with scientists? Scientists are researchers; explorers. Moreover, their knowledge is hardly secret. Usually they publish their findings as soon as they're uncovered for any and all to review.

Haven't scientists always been discovering disturbing facts and doing God-like things? And haven't some people always tried to suppress cutting edge technologies?

Witch doctors - back in the day - were one of the few people with knowledge about subjects such as biology and chemistry; by simple virtue of their having knowledge about these areas (about which their contemporaries were ignorant) they were capable of doing things with that knowledge that other people thought were miraculous.

In that respect, witch doctors and their ilk were in many regards a forerunner of scientists, there are however two major distinctions between the two groups. The first is that back in those days they were less likely to share information with one another, as a result their discoveries were often lost over time a large part of this was to preserve their mystique and enable them to charge obscene amounts of money - compared to today where they are far more likely to convey that information to their peers, though with limitations primarily as a result of business or security implications; the second difference being that the people around them back then were extremely limited in their understanding of themselves and their surroundings - compared to today where most people have a basic understanding of what science is capable of and if they really had the drive to, they could learn a great deal of science themselves.

Personal understanding is that evolution carries on eternally and beings are mediums for the *WHOLE* to carry on the evolution and so since Humans are the most evolved specie and if the *whole* wishes to use humans for furthering evolution then surely it is a way forward.
The *whole* is limitless in qualities and *gods* as in mythologies are best in one particular quality and if humans who are part of THAT *whole* are taking that function then they too are *gods*.
Already in dharmic culture in India we call so many people *gods*.
