Reincarnation/Past Lives

Antiochian

Any suggestions for a decent, relatively easy to read book(s) presenting case examples and possible evidence? Obviously there are probably a thousand out there, so I'm hesitant to blow money on a Kindle book that turns out to be garbage. Thanks.

The Sum of Awe

Brought to you by the moment that spacetime began.
Depends, would you like the genre to be just information about it, a story with drama that includes it or what?

My favorite published reincarnation book is called "Reincarnation & Karma" forgot the author, but it's pretty specific and has detailed information about them both.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Dr Ian Stevenson (now-deceased) who was fully credentialed in Biochemistry, held a professorship in Psychiatry, and had pursued interests involving parapsychology. He attended the University of Virginia with his Alma Mater at St. Andrews and McGill University. where his work was noted by Carl Sagon and Aurther C. Clarke who were intrigued enough, but at the same time felt it was deficient in providing positive proof evidence of re-birth/reincarnation albiet compelling.

Refer to Carl Sagons book, "Demon Haunted World" for details concerning this.

I'm looking for nonfiction books about the subject. Still haven't decided what I believe about life after death and have decided to do some investigating on this, since most in my religion believe in reincarnation of some sort. I'm more or less agnostic at this point.

One interesting movie about reincarnation I watched years ago was Yesterdays's Children, in which a character played by Jane Seymour becomes convinced she was a poor single mother in 1930s Ireland, and it's fairly convincing. She even meets her "sons," who are old men. I hope to see it again and buy it someday.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Hi Antiochian, below is a link to a Theosophical site where you can read much about reincarnation.

Don't be too quick to believe that the persona/ego of a person survives death though this is the belief of spiritualists and the popular media. Past life memory is that of the soul, the ego perishes with the body, but the very essence of the life's experience of the deceased is transmuted/synthesized and becomes a integral of the soul/spirit. However there is an astral shell of the deceased's body that does survive death of the physical body and has recordings of people and events of the life just completed, though this will slowly decay in the astral realms over time. It is this, according to Theosophical teachings that spiritualists communicate with and gives the impression that it is the soul that is being contacted. But no, the soul is in a higher plane and has no contact with mortals.

This is a very important subject for those who are serious in their religious aspirations, as true spiritual 'growth' comes with the diminishing of the persona/ego, not its exaltation to immortality as one may conclude if it survives the death of the body to reincarnates time and time again.

A clod of earth. Give it any shape. Start again, destroy the old shape, give it a new shape - nothing of the old remains but the clay. That is re-incarnation, re-birth. Repeat the action any number of times. We are like these shapes formed out of the substrate - Brahman.

"Yathā soumya! ekena mritpinḍena sarvaṃ mṛinmayaṃ vijñātaṃ syāt,
vāchāraṃbhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ mṛittiketyeva satyaṃ.
" Chandogya Upanishad 6.1.4

(Just as, O Gentle Enquirer, by a single clod of clay all that is made of clay is known, all names being only distortion in the manner of speaking, clay being the only truth.)

This is basic, but there is more to learn. One can take a part of the clod and make a new shape out of it. Or add more clay and make a bigger object. The size of clod need not be constant.

"I Have Lived Before": The True Story of the Reincarnation of Shanti Devi.

This is the first known book on reincarnation based on the recollections of a little girl named Shanti Devi who claimed to remember a past life as a wife and mother in a different region .

Shanti Devi - Wikipedia

Shanti Devi persistently pleaded to her parents to let her go to the region mentioned(Mathura) and once even ran away from home at age of six to reach Mathura.

When Mahatma Gandhi heard about the case he set up a commission of 15 prominent people, including parliamentarians, national leaders, and members from the media, to study the case. He also invited Shanti Devi to his ashram.

The committee was instrumental in persuading her reluctant parents to allow Shanti Devi to go to Mathura with them. Upon reaching the place she was able to remember minute details of the place and her past life family, though she was seeing the place for the first time in her young life. A brief article on her life by Dr. K.S. Rawat can be found in this link.

The Case of Shanti Devi

Sture Lonnerstrand, a Swedish critic, came all the way from Sweden to expose the “fake,” as he thought it to be, but after investigation wrote, “This is the only fully explained and proven case of reincarnation there has been."

A book about her was published by Sture Lonnerstrand in 1994, and the english translation appeared in 1998 titled, "I Have Lived Before: The True Story of the Reincarnation of Shanti Devi".

She was also interviewed by Dr. Ian Stevenson who stated, “I also interviewed Shanti Devi, her father, and other pertinent witnesses, including Kedarnath, the husband claimed in her previous life. My research indicates that she made at least 24 statements of her memories that matched the verified facts.”

Woman who ‘tried kidnapping partner from past life’ arrested in Mumbai

Published time: 11 Sep, 2018 10:23

While many remain sceptical about the whole concept of reincarnation, one woman believes in it so much that she allegedly sought to kidnap a 21-year-old student in Mumbai she believed had been her life partner in a past life.

Veronica Borode, 35, also named locally as Kiran, was taken into custody by police on Saturday night along with a Mumbai police constable believed to have helped her in the bizarre plan.

According to the local police officer responsible for the case, the accused and the constable, Anand Mudhe, arrived at the student’s residence in Piplaya Hana before trying to kidnap her.

“Borode reportedly told the girl that the latter was her life partner in their previous [life].They then tried to forcibly take the woman with them.

“However, she raised te alarm, following which her neighbours rushed to her aid,” Dabi said, according to Times Now News. The student revealed that the two had met in February this year when she had been visiting Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital with her mother, who needed cancer treatment. It was then she met Borode and the pair exchanged phone numbers.

Things started getting creepy when the woman one day reportedly called the student to tell her they had been husband and wife in a previous life and should therefore live together during their current existence too.

The student said she had felt “emotionally pressurized” by Borode to move to Mumbai, a request she had turned down.

Borode had also reportedly attempted to call the student from 15 different numbers and had visited the engineering college where she studied, but failed to find her. The two people arrested remain in custody as police continue investigations.

Serves them right. There can be many reasons why Veronica Borode wanted the girl to come to Mumbai. Lesbian crush, put the girl in sex trade, property. I do not know what was the exact reason. Of course, police in India are not averse to participate in such acts for reasonable money. Normally such persons ae suspended from the job, but in time, they could be reinstated (again on payment of reasonable money to the higher-ups).

This is actually a criminal issue.

Where is the 'case example' or 'possible evidence ' for reincarnation in here, as mentioned in the op !

Apart from the criminal aspect of the case, how do you know Veronica Borode's claim about knowing about her past life is false?

To bring in a policeman. That is done in India to frighten a victim and make him/her do what the person requires. The policeman will appear in his 'impressive' official dress with a baton. It is sure a give away. Veronica was a criminal and the policeman engaged in a criminal act. I do not believe in this re-birth clap-trap, but does that make it necessary for the girl to spend her new life with Veronica?

Secondly, I do not think the girl was studying for a regular bachelors course in engineering. Even the lowly 'Industrial Training' (technician) course might have been termed and engineering course. What I mean to say is that a student of a regular engineering course will be better educated and will not fall for such tactics.
