Cells made of metal may be evolving.

here's the key words ".....they may be evolving." they aren't evolving they MAY BE. why don't scientist ever claim that something has happened, but it's always, something will happen. how desperate are these people. it's pathetic really.

Well we could put our heads in the sand and chant down with science  OR

OR maybe we could just watch and see how it plays out.

You will have to live with MAY for the time being.

Because scientists have to try to be right, whereas religious people only have to make claims. :sarcastic

Because scientists want to be truthful. Not exaggerate. Not pretend to more knowledge than they have. As Jiddu Krishnamurti once said, "The truth is hesitant".

They aren't life yet, nor does he claim they are... but very cool none the less. I posted about this earlier.

We will know more in seven months how lifelike they really are.

see the presentation he gave on his research at TED talks here:

Ahh, that one missed my science radar, thank you very much!

Disclaimer: As an astrophysicist and a cosmologist I tend not to look for this stuff too often, I tend to happen on it by accident most of the time.

Rephrasing.

Claiming anything as definitive is setting yourself up for failure.

Example, the weird dude who keeps setting a date for the world to end, and coming up with a new excuse every time it doesn't.

thats not what i was saying, than can try all they want, but how come on their first try they have to spout out that look something is going to happen, why not wait for it to happen and then say it happened. the same thing was done with 'life' on mars. "we think there is life because the signs point out, oh, no life, just something that we believe is ice". it's always like this with scientists. a few months back they said that they have come up with a cure for cancer but they only have to try it out first. haha

thats exactly what they are doing, they say 'blah blah is happening' but then we need to wait and see if it will actually happen. whats so hard about waiting for it to happen and then present it? the same thing was said about creating a universe by colliding two electrons, look that happened just like everything else that they say is going to happen.

i wasn't saying that they should give a definite answer that will just make them look even more silly, i mean/meant is they have this metal experiment going on and why not wait for the results before they make childish claims about what might happen. have the metal balls (as they appeared in the picture) evolved into some sort of a living thing like and autobot or a megatron, as someone before mentioned the transformers, in order to say that they are evolving? the answer is no, so from where did the researcher get the idea that the metals are evolving?

Because the experiment isn't done yet...
You can't talk about results before you are done.

This is like complaining about people who talk about movies, books or albums before they are done... are they desperate pathetic people too?

hi painted wolf. i know that the experiment isn't done yet, by why has the researcher come to such a big conclusion that his experiment 'may be evolving'. this is very common among scientists, don't they have the patience to just wait for the outcome before they make such claims based on nothing. i'm sure you've read the other examples i made in the other posts.

I think you'll find the fault isn't with the scientists claims but with the reporters exaggerations.

It's not as good a story to say that "we may have found a way to cure some cancers in mice but we need to do more study to see if the same thing will work in humans".
It just doesn't sell newspapers.

True dat.
When one is familiar with specific issues & sees them reported on, one's eyes roll.
We should not confuse reality with what we see in the news.

Because from how they behave they "may be" doing just that, it's certainly within the realm of possibility given how they reproduce... they may be ale to evolve, and that is what the set up of the experiment is supposed to test.

but you need to give them time and then compare the starting population and the final generations before they can say with any certainty.

This story is about an interesting experiment that is in the process of happening. It's going to be about the "may be" because the "may be" is very exciting from a biological and cosmological standpoint.

Reporters like to do stories about cutting edge stuff... like back in the 80's and 90's when they kept talking about those mysterious "tablet computers" that didn't actually show up as a viable product until a couple years ago. We like to hear stories about the possibilities of the future.
