"Give to whoever asks of you"

Shermana

Heretic
What is the meaning of this commandment by Yashua? What if you refuse to do so? What if you do so?

Does this mean you are obliged to give everything if asked? Did Jesus mean "borrow/lend"? Can a homeless bum ask for your house and car and to be consistent as a Christian, must they give it to him? Is he referring only to fellow Nazarenes?

It means what it says. Just because a great many people don't do it, doesn't mean that it means something else. It just means people don't want to do it, and considering how hard it is, I can understand that. I don't give to anyone who asks, even if it is a simple thing. Sometimes I do, but most times I don't.

"Give to whoever asks of you", I suppose.

What if you refuse to do so?
Assuming you have that interpretation, I suppose it would mean that you value physical stuff more than the Kingdom of Heaven, and that you don't fully trust God to see to your true needs (because if you did trust him, then why hold on to any stuff at all?).

A good Christian should do what ever he can to help others with in reason. Don't give the bum your house but invite him or her in your house for supper, maybe a shower and a bed for a reasonable time period. He also said given happily and not out of compulsion.

Where does the "within reason" part come from?

As peole have said, it meas exactly what it says.

The fact that people still think Jesus would have supported capitalism for christians amuses me greatly :D

Question Everything
Here are a few scriptures:

Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee. Deuteronomy 16:17

41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
- Mark 12:41 - 44

(Topical Guide | G Give, Gave, Given:Entry)

Prov. 21:26 righteous give and spareth not
Prov. 25:21 thine enemy be hungry, give him bread
Prov. 28:27 He that give unto the poor shall not lack

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 aGive to him that asketh thee, and from him that would bborrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 ¶ Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt alove thy bneighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, aLove your benemies, cbless them that dcurse you, do egood to them that fhate you, and gpray for them which despitefully use you, and hpersecute you;
45 That ye amay be the bchildren of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth crain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 5:40 - 48

The thing that makes it hard for me right now, are my family obligations. Everything I have goes to my kids /family, so you could say I give everything... but some might think this is not really giving because it is all staying in the fam. (we give to charities etc. etc. too, but most of it stays in the fam). If I did not have kids / husband / parents / grandparents etc. etc. I'm not sure how I would live / what I would give - I'm not sure that I would ever remain long without any family/friends around to take care of....

Jesus teaches us to freely give it away, not allow it to be forcefully taken away - these are very different things.

6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

Proverbs 6:6 - 8

Jesus did not force the rich man to give anything up, he just suggested it. It's not a gift/charity, if it is forcefully taken.

Jesus didn´t force anyone to anything eccept from the merchants in the temple.

His message was very clear though: Give everything. As simple as that.

He doesn't? :sarcastic

Luke 6:29-30:

and whoever takes away your [p]coat, do not withhold your [q]shirt from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.

Ah, the Big Book of Multiple Choice.

Luke 6:29-30:

Ah, the Big Book of Multiple Choice.

Luke 6 is not in reference to governments.

freely ye have received, freely give. - Matthew 10:8

personally, I think our freedom is proportional to our righteousness. A society filled with unrighteous people (who lie, cheat, steal, murder) will not last long unless strict laws/big gov are put in place. A society with righteous people (honest, hard working, charitable, etc.) needs fewer laws to keep order. To me, increased taxes/bigger gov/more regulations/ are a measure of the decline of society's ability to act of their own free will.

In any event, Jesus gave freely, and this is the highest form of giving.

I agree, but Jesus didn´t mean to form a society, he meant to form individual people.

He clearly said we need to be poor. To not work for the next day but to only worry in the present day. He said that if someone hits us in the right chick, we give him the left, and when the roman soldier cut his ear, he asked his disciples not to fight and healed it back.

So wars should also be against christianism.

He clearly said we need to give everything we have to follow him and that he thatprefers a husband a son, a mother than him, is not worthy of him.

There were not ambiguous terms at all.

No, it's in reference to people. It says that when a person demands something of you, you are to hand it over willingly. And it makes no exemption for when the person has been sent by the government.

Thank you for quoting these.

It's obvious who Jesus was and who we are to be. Take all that we have and give it to those asking. Then we will have more. This is the secret to perfection and the power of the Holy Spirit.
