Nobody accepts defeat in a religious debate

Twig pentagram

I come here to listen to peoplpe and to share my opinion. I love the fact of sharing and comparing ideas and I am not here colecting "winnings".

Debates are not a means to an end for me, but a mean in itself. If the debate ceases to be fun for me, I back out.

There is a saying that goes something like "I won many debates with people smarter than me, but I´ve never won any debate with an irrational person" (I am probably paraphrasing a lot)

So it´s not about winning, it´s about knowing more of myself while I post and be in comunion with others who have similar AND opposing ideas.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

So, nobody really accepts he`s defeated or has accepted the fact he has won in a religious debate. Okay. What if I won against Madhuri in a debate that says, " Krishna does not care, " simply because she stopped reacting to my last post?

Does it mean the debater wins if he/she gets to say the last words?

There`s a post from Thief somewhere who said he has never been defeated. You mean nobody accepts defeat in this religious debate forum? There is no sense continuing a debate in this forum if nobody among us here accepts defeat!

To be fair, it's rather difficult to defeat complete nonsense.

What I find humourously ironic in all this is that, so far, nobody in this thread shows any sign of "accepting defeat", but you continue to participate anyhow. :D

"no one" accepts defeat because of

insecurity.

the one that quietly walks away or admits it are secure enough in themselves to admit it....which i think is a more valuable quality than being right.

edit:
"insecure people" do not accept defeat...

What does it mean to defeat someone in a debate? I think the only real victory is to change someone's opinion, which only comes after a really hard thrashing. That's very rare, and usually only happens when one person is much more advanced than the other.

Why must anyone acknowledge defeat? The point here is to present a viewpoint, allow other viewpoints to be presented and for everyone to learn from them. The presenters don't have to be victorious or defeated to learn from each other and even if they don't those observing do. So, there is a great deal of sense in continuing debates on the forum regardless of who accepts defeat and who doesn't.

I think a lot of debates can come down to a matter of skill and style. I've often seen debates on the internet where someone might take a position that I actually agree with, yet argues for it so poorly that I might consider that he's "lost" the debate - even if I believe his position to be right.

It's mostly the guys who are like that. Guys can never admit they are wrong

I rarely see two people actually debating the same thing for admitting defeat to really be meaningful anyway.

Tis true.

It's very difficult to ever come out ahead in a debate when you have to stick to silly little things like logic and facts and the other person can make up as much fecal matter as they like.

You can neither admit defeat nor claim victory if it's not about winning or losing. It's like watching a movie and then doing a victory dance during the credits. What's the point?

My point here is that if there are no winners or losers in a religious debate then the issues discussed is not a debate anymore. It`s called sharing one`s religious views.

I don't really mind "winning" or "losing" in a religious debate. As long as I have elaborated my points clearly, that's already fine with me, but, of course, whenever I don't "win", I just accept it (maybe my reasoning isn't good enough or factors like that). I'm no superman...

But you are defending the truth, the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict`s expecting a lot from you, my friend, to prevail.

Nay, I'm just "representing" it. And most of the time, I don't really discuss much things about it. Also, it is laborious most of the time.:p
