Faith in religion is a mental illness

I would call it something like, 'mental condition', if were going to get technical. I think mental condition is a neutral term. Faith isnt necessarily bad. It can be, but it can be good for some people too, depending on their particular circumstances.

A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern generally associated with subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, and which is not a part of normal development or culture.

-Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_disorder

Apparently, if it would normally be classified as a mental disorder, if it is cultural (religion counts apparently) it is not.

Apparently it can be called a disability. :)

Some said this to me on another site. Do you agree or disagree?

Most people have faith in something at one time or another whether it's their intuition or their ability to achieve....My faith isn't based on religion but my faith is in God.

Sometimes I feel that God is absolutely insane. Then I realize that it's something I'm not letting go of that's the reason I think that.

Or because he is a figment of the human imagination. Which would literally explain every odd contradiction about God that has ever come up EVER.

I know what you saying :) Been there. For me it's been when I've been allowing my "human nature/side" to gain control, thankfully the Holy Spirit is there on my spiritual side going "remember this" and reminding me of something amazing God has done in my life and I go "oh yeah!!! :D"

Yes. You can live that way. Until you start actually living...then you can't. Doesn't have to be God to teach you that. Life can do it just as effectively...and generally more roughly.

Life has taught me that the very idea of God is entirely subjective and not the least bit objective. So...no, your reasoning does not hold water.

Depends on which religion, if you are the only person in the world that has a certain faith in a fallacy it could be a mental illness or some form of delusional disorder, but if you are among millions who share an equally absurd faith then attributing a mental illness to each and everyone of them is a bit paranoid which could also be described as a mental illness. At the very least you would be falling for the The fundamental attribution error

Considering I am a religious person myself, I definitely disagree. If that true, most of the world must be crazy.

What makes you think that isn't true, what with the current state of the world?

I might argue that a majority of people are somewhat crazy.

Some people with mental illnesses self-medicate on faith. But then, some people with mental illnesses self-medicate on just about anything -- drugs, alcohol, politics, etc.
