Dawkins banned due to atheism

Richard Dawkins was banned from speaking at a Michigan country club after they found out he was an atheist.

Wow. If true, that's pretty blatant discrimination. How would people have responded if the country club banned a speaker after finding out he was a Muslim or a Catholic?

I've only seen variations on this one article, however. I wonder if the club literally said "You can't speak here because you are an atheist", or if that is simply what was assumed.

Quote from the article: "A Michigan country club has nixed an appearance by outspoken religion critic Richard Dawkins after catching wind of the fact that he’s an atheist."

'Catching wind of'?
They didn't know beforehand? :sarcastic
I mean, it's not as if he's made his views on religion a secret...

Odd they didn't expect atheists once the event was sponsored by

Mr Dawkins was to speak at the Wyndgate Country Club tonight in an event sponsored by the Center for Inquiry, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a secular society through education, advocacy and research, according to the group’s website.

It's a private club, isn't it? So long as it isn't public, they can ban whoever they want for whatever reason they want. Or am I mistaken?

Honestly, I don't blame them. Dawkins is not just an atheist, he's the worst sort of atheist. A venomously anti-religious, militant atheist who makes a number of really ignorant statements about religion by painting it with far too broad of a brush. He makes the more reasonable and rational atheists look bad, IMHO.

Was he banned because he is an atheist, or banned because he is a militant extremist atheist?

Is any atheist with the intellect to effectively defend atheism a militant extremist?

If I look at my own faith, if I build it on metaphysical and philosophical reason and feel my faith, theist atheist agnostic etc, and I defend it against anyone who asks or even offer people up for debates and prove their platforms illogical in a controlled consenting debates, with all due respect, then no, I am not a militant extremist

If I attack opposing ideas as though they were evil, condescend anyone who thinks other wise and react in irritated ways to ever challenge to my faith, I'd say that's pretty militant.

I do not denies Dawkin's right to get up and call whatever he wants whatever he thinks nor am I in any place to cast judgement on him as a person or act as though I am any better. I will admit, his speech to me at least seem to be more offensive then defensive of his positions, which comes off a tend offensive.

^Edit: I agree with SunStone, on second thought, until he puts someone in harms way he can't be considered an extremist, yet I would describe him not in a bad way, but devoted, if not militant about his positions

Of course they can.
I'm just surprised that this was something they needed to 'catch wind of', as if it's some kind of secret... ;)

A few questions in this regard:
1) What exactly has he said about religion that you would consider ignorant?
2) Would feel the same way if he had used the same kind of rhetoric against, say, a political ideology or party?

That's hilarious.

Who is the ignorant sod who doesn't know that Dawkins is an atheist?

Militant? Taboo? You certainly like to cast any criticism of your views as extremist. What, pray tell, would be a non-extremist criticism of your views?

Prove what I bolded. Seriously, you go from me calling Dawkins militant (which I am certainly not the first theist or non-theist to do so, nor the last) to claiming that I cast any criticism of my views as extremist. Do you play with strawmen much? You are better than that Sunstone.

I've been on this board long enough to know you like to cast criticisms of your views as extremist. If not all criticisms, then what criticisms have you come across of your views that you do not think of as extremist?
